MasterWorks fully remodeled two upstairs bathrooms and searched and repaired the leak that had damaged our downstairs bathroom ceiling. I felt that we worked well together and we were able to accommodate each other's calendars. The bottom line is that the work was completed in a reasonable length of time. I paid along the way at increments. have read so many postings on Nextdoor sites about people who were left with incomplete projects. This was my biggest fear. Mike Wilson and MasterWorks were very reliable. Out project got off to a slow start as my daughter came down with COVID. While we waited for her to get better. The gentlemen worked on refinishing my front door, painting the shutters, and painting the shed. I thought they did a terrific job. I think it must be quite challenging to run a business where there are so many variables and to also stay solvent. Do you jump with joy when prices are artificially inflated after you do something as ridiculous as request an itemized bill? Do you find yourself yearning for intimidating legalistic threats due to the incompetence of others? Well, then MasterWorks Painters can meet ALL of your needs! After a terrible experience in which MasterWorks showed up a full day late to paint our house and never got in touch with us regarding finishing the job, we never received a bill. However, six weeks later, we did get vague voicemails on our phone quoting two different balances due. When we tried to return these calls to request an actual bill, their voicemail box was full. Eventually got ahold of the owner, from whom we requested an actual bill before we paid the balance due. He refused and threatened to place a mechanic's lien on our home. Note: We were 100% willing to pay - and said so. We just wanted an itemized bill for the work done, as we were allegedly paying by the man hour and there had been some issues during the job. A bridge too far for MasterWorks! It was particularly awesome when my husband called the owner back after the lien was threanted and the owner LIED about his conversation with me, saying I'd refused to pay *anything.* After consulting three lawyers, we learned there is essentially NO burden of proof to place a lien on a home in VA. Awesome. This guy gets his gander up because we want him to basically give us a receipt and he can place a lien on our home willy-nilly. They had us totally over a barrel. When we called to arrange payment, the balance due had jumped from 1200$ to more than 1500$. WTF?! Intimidated by the threat of a bogus lien placed on our (on the market) property, we followed our lawyers' advice and paid the amount in full. We will, however, be filing complaints with whatever county/town gave them their business license, Angie's List, the BBB and the Attorney General... to start. We found MasterWorks/Mike Wilson through the Five-Star Rated book of contractors for Fairfax County. We have waited 8 months to post this review in order to fully experience the results of our remodeling/painting contract with MasterWorks. They did a fine job with painting the interior of our house but damaged several items (broken floor lamp, broken marble fireplace hearth) while doing so. Unfortunately, the crack in the fireplace hearth where they stood on a ladder to paint the ceiling wasn't discovered until after they had completed their work and been paid in full. In addition to the painting, MasterWorks remodeled our master bathroom. The work was okay but not stellar. As another reviewer pointed out, Mike provided an "allowance" for materials but then sent us to a place to select tile where the cost of the tile alone far exceeded the total allowance. Throughout the remodel, we encountered numerous problems including failed county inspections for plumbing and electrical, and installation of the wrong granite vanity top. The foreman informed us that the granite contractor had cut the sinks in the wrong location in the granite we had selected and that is why a different granite was installed. Once the final check had cleared, our repeated attempts to get the foreman to return and address the issues that didn't surface until he was gone were unsuccessful. Mike attempted to overcharge for some of the additional handyman work that his team did (charged 8 hours for work that the foreman told us only took 1 hour). Since there was a dispute over the final bill and Mike was not so pleasant about it, we did not attempt to get him to address any of the issues we discovered after-the-fact. The foreman was extremely friendly and responsive throughout the remodeling/painting process but not after. We are now planning a kitchen remodel and will share with others the lessons learned from our experience with MasterWorks: 1. Take pictures of everything we select so that there are no substitutions made. 2. Get a breakdown of the estimated cost of materials in the "allowance" so that we have a good sense of how much we can spend on tile, granite, light fixtures, faucets, etc. 3. Go over everything in our house with a fine tooth comb BEFORE paying the final bill. 4. Plan on two or three times longer to complete the project than what the contractor promises. read more

They were under a lot of pressure to get the entire house painted prior to moving in but after closing with the settlement office. His crew has a very methodical/systematic way in their approach to getting the job done and managed to paint every wall exactly the way I had envisioned. We found Master Works Painting and Remodeling in the 5 star Loudoun contractors booklet that is mailed to my house annually. My wife and I decided to build a wet bar in our basement and after getting a few quotes from different companies, Master Works gave us a competitive price. There were a few issues that we encountered during the process, however, the communication that our Project Manager and Owner had with us was excellent! We were given certain allowances for different items (ie. granite, cabinets, tile) that we had to stay under, but we did not know how much these items cost until we would choose the particular item and then would realize that it exceeded our allowance. This resulted in us having to either go back and identify a cheaper item or pay the difference. An itemized list would have helped with the process to show exactly how much we were spending on each item (we received an itemized list for our "allowance" of each item, but we never received the FINAL itemized list to show what we actually spent). This small project took 6 months!! However, most of the delays were from Master Works' subcontractors/manufacturers i.e. we received a delivery of the wrong color cabinets. We notified Matt (Project Manager) and he immediately resolved the issue however it took a month or so for the correct color cabinets to finally arrive. Not only did the Project Manager keep me updated on the status on a weekly basis, the owner Mike Wilson would call me in the evening to reassure me that they are making sure that the project would be completed before a house party we had planned. I also want to add that the actual workers who put the wet bar together were very friendly, professional, and courteous to both my wife and I. Master Works kept their promise and finished the wet bar before my house party. We received numerous compliments and the wet bar looks immaculate! Kudos to Matt (Project Manager), Mike Wilson (Owner), and their workers! The next time my wife and I need any sort of renovations or additions to our home, Master Works will be our number 1 choice. read more

Masterworks did a good job of painting my house exterior. They showed up on time and were fast and efficient. I think the man in charge could not read english. The work order described the work in detail, but I had to tell him that he had not performed some of the line items. The contract specified Minwax Gel Coat on the front door but they used brown Sherwin-Williams paint. The replaced some rotten wood with rot-proof polymer, but used the rough side of the board, not the smooth side (which would have matched the rest of the frame). The paint on the door frame was not smooth, but almost cement-paint in texture. read more

I hade a rush paint job to be done. I called MasterWorks but could not get an appointment for an estimate until five days later. I was home 30 minutes before the appointed time. They had my cell and home numbers. I waited for them for two hours and they never showed up. When I finally called their office, there was a voice message that said "We are unable to accept any more work at this time" and I was immediately disconnected without allowing for an opportunity to leave a message. I understand that business is business but they should have called when they knew they couldn't handle any more work since I had an appointment. With customer service like that, it might be good that I was spared dealing with them on the project. read more
