We found them on Living Social and I was leery. We just needed some interior painting done and didn't know what kind of job complete strangers would do. Well, I can't say enough positive about Gust Renovations. They were punctual, clean, and super helpful. They did the work right, even when it meant it would take them longer, and provided advice as to how to make small improvements to increase the value of our house without spending alot of money. I haven't had the best luck finding honesty in the home improvement sector. These guys understand quality and affordability, and I highly recommend them. I've hired them to do additional work in and around our house-- more painting, replacement of floor tile, and work on our exterior fence. Will likely hire them to powerwash/stain our deck, too. They're very accessible and responsive, as well. read more

EDIT: I wrote a more detailed review here 11 days ago, but I got a Cease and Desist letter from a lawyer representing Gust, so I took down the details they contested in the letter because I've decided I don't want to waste the time, energy and money, nor experience what I feel would be emotionally damaging to relive with this company in court. I hired Gust to install hardwood flooring in one of my rental units, which began falling apart immediately, without anyone ever occupying the unit (i.e., no furniture, just people walking through once in a while to estimate other work). I was told by Gust that it didn't need glue because it was a floating floor. However, the manufacturer's instructions were that it needed to be glued at the tongue and groove (which I verified after the install). Because that mistake was egregious, and because of how I felt about my interactions with them since planning the project in August until they installed the floor in January, I decided they didn't seem competent enough to come back and fix the floor. So at the point that I discovered that the floor had been installed incorrectly, I requested that they provide references that would prove successful work of this kind or that they subcontract to someone with references (though I recognize I obviously should've done that before I hired them). They ignored that request, instead asking that I meet with them at the unit to discuss how to fix the floor. In my opinion, that was unnecessary, since they had already admitted (in writing) to assuming incorrectly that the installation didn't require any glue even though the vendor's instructions were clear that it did require glue. They also suggested using a tape-like product in lieu of adhesive, but I contacted the vendor, who said that was inappropriate, so I decided not to allow them to do it. Instead of arguing this further with them and/or giving them a chance to redo the work (or possibly screw it up even worse), I chose to pay someone else to completely undo and redo the work they did. I've been investing in real estate for years and have dealt with many contractors. In my opinion, Gust Renovations was unprofessional and incompetent and I exhort you to find another contractor AND to ask for and thoroughly investigate references for any contractor you engage with. read more

Two star review for two very different experiences. Long story short, use these guys for painting, nothing else. Our first experience was great, Gust came out and painted our condo. The work was done in a timely fashion and was of good quality. THEN, we tried again. We hired Gust to mount a flat screen TV and hide the wires in the wall. After cancelling and rescheduling several times, they finally made it to the condo one day, late of course. Only one guy showed up, the other was seemingly lost or late. After marking my wall in ink pen, the guy just gave up, said the wires couldn't be placed in the wall. So there the TV sat, hanging, wires hanging down. Shortly after leaving the incomplete work, I received an email that Gust wouldn't be responsible if the TV they had just mounted falls off of the wall. I hired another contractor, who completed the work. Use them for painting, nothing else. read more

We recently used Gus Renovations and we're pleased. It's family owned and the father and two sons do the work. Mother runs the office and organizes schedules and repairs. They are no nonsense and although you may wait a little longer than you want (busy schedules), I'd agree with other reviewers-they are worth it. Great value and they care about their work. I recently hired Gust (family owned business) to paint my 550 sq ft apartment. Upon hiring them, I had a few informational phone calls with co-owner Steven who answered my many many questions about services, pricing, paint brands, etc. I knew immediately I wanted to work with Gust because they were professional and experienced. On the day of brother Michael arrived and walked through my space with me. Michael was just as personable and thorough as his brother Steven. It was like a consultation where together we were able to strategize the final result. Very helpful for finalizing colors and wall finishes! And I like that Gust picks up the paint for you - one less errand to do! He painted 3 rooms in half a day! I wasn't sure about one of the colors and Michael told me to give it some time but call if I wanted to change it. Glad I did because I love it now! I bought a couple of different groupons for a couple of different painters and Gust was BY FAR the best of the lot. I'm already booking them to do some more work in my home. They were prompt, tidy, and did excellent painting. I had them do three bedrooms (all over carpet) and there wasn't an errant drop ANYWHERE. They were super nice guys to boot- I felt totally comfortable with them there and would recommend them to my mother if she ever asked (or moved to Virginia). My appointment got moved because of weather and they were communicative throughout the whole process and were really concerned about getting another date that worked for me. read more

I purchased the Living Social certificate for the painting of two rooms. It actually ended up being one large living room that needed to be painted. I could not have been happier with the service and quality of work from this family owned company. First, the work was done impeccably well and in great time. Michael also helped me move the furniture and back and kept the area amazingly clean. What I definitely liked is that these guys do the work themselves. They don't farm it out to subs. Rather it seems that they take pride in the work and helping their customers. Most likely I will hire them back to power wash and stain our deck and to resurface our kitchen cabinets. read more

Well patience paid off. I was finally able to work with Gust and I'm happy to say it was worth the wait. They gave me professional advice as to what colors to choose and explained to me the pricing. I had some "trouble spots" on some walls and ceilings due to water damage and also some cracks from the earthquake a few years ago but Michael was able to fix them. I am generally pleased with their work and their professionalism and would recommend them. read more

These guys are wonderful! They are family owned business. Not only do they do a fantastic job, but they go above and beyond. We have used them to paint multiple homes over the years and are currently using them to help repair some work on our home. I found Gust on Yelp and liked the review. We needed basic spring/summer cleanup and repair for our home in the Kent section of Washington DC. . Son Steven Gust spoke to me and made a prompt appointment. He arrived on time, was very knowledgable. What he wasn't sure about he deferred to his father. They gave a fair estimate and assured me they would complete the job in 3 days. I asked them to power wash my decks and stone pool deck, sand and stain our outdoor furniture. They pointed out a number of other problems, wear and tear, around the house. Steven and his brother Michael worked meticulously and completed the work on time. The work was nothing short of perfect. I highly recommend them and plan to use their services for another assignment. These guys are intelligent, friendly, trustworthy and responsible. read more

Good, but not great. I've seen better lines done by plenty of other painters. I am kicking myself for not going with another painter. My wife did a living social deal and we decided to use them. It took them 4 days to paint 1000 SF and it was good but not great. They should've taped if there lines were not perfect. Nice guys, just not the best painters! read more

Gust Renovation just finished painting my entire interior and installed wainscoting, crown and a number of light fixtures. This was probably the best experience I've ever had with a contractor. Family owned business with the sons and a few close associates doing most of the work. They subbed out some of the painting and even the subcontractor was great. I tried to explain the experience to someone the other day and said it was just like having family visit but that's not fair because family get to be a pain in the ass after a few days. The three sons (Stephen, Michael, and Nick) are amazing guys. Each one has their own expertise and take great pride in their work. Gary, the dad and owner, knows the secret to raising great kids. They also had two other workers that helped out a number of days. James, great worker who fits in like a fourth son and Jack who can fix ANYTHING (careful, he can shoot the breeze with the best of 'em). Now for the important part, the work. These guys have an amazing attention to detail. Everything is pretty much perfect. The cut in work around the molding and wains is perfect, the wainscoting looks incredible and you'd need a magnifying glass to find a brush stroke. If you're in the DC metro area and renovating your house, these are the guys!!!! read more

Impressed with the knowledge, experience, and workmanship of Gust Renovations and with our kitchen renovation experience. The kitchen, especially the tile work and framing turned out great. As new home owners moving in, we also appreciated all the smaller jobs and consulting that we needed during that transitioning time. I like that this is a local family/team who know the area very well, are patient and clear honest communicators who network with excellent local vendors and sub-contractors. Their work is artful, detail-minded, and confident. At the same time they were reasonable, offered alternatives to hit our budget, and cared tremendously that we were happy with their work. This project did take a little longer than we thought it would, but they were always clear about that through the multi-step process. Being flexible got us wonderful results. Recommended. read more
