My house was on the market, and the buyer wanted a roof inspection and called High Point Roofing. I had no problem with the inspection and personally have over 40 years of construction experience. The report came back that there was one missing shingle, exposed nail heads on the ridge vent, rubber cracking on pipe vent, two popped nails on garage section, discoloration on front slop shingles and some granular loss as found in guttering (these repairs were simple and would take no more than one hour to repair). This 23-year-old roof expert concluded that the 30-year architectural shingle that was approximately 23 years old only had a "maximum of 1-2 Years Left of Life" and that the roof needed replaced (Notice the caps used to demand attention and generate fear). In all of my years of dealing with inspectors I have never had one offer such a precise life expectancy, only High Point Roofing. Needled to Say the Buyer wanted a new $20,000.00 roof at the Sellers expense. I'm perfectly fine with fixing problems when necessary and needed. In this case it was an egregious attempt to put on new roof that wasn't necessary. I called Antony Regalbuto one of the owners, about his inspector and report. He reported key problems that are often indicators of a roof in decline that an inspector would identify. He noted specifically that often such roofs have fiberglass exposed and bubbling shingles which can include moisture problems and/or poor ventilation in the attic. I agreed with him that both were indicators of a bad roof. I then asked Anthony, if his 23-year-old roof inspector identified in his report such failures and he was silent. He was silent because they didn't exist. In the end Anthony protected his employee. I'm sure Anthony will dispute my report and if so I have written documentation in hand to corroborate my statement. I also have a few billboards that I can offer caution and direct potential customers to another roofing company. I'm very disappointed with the High Point Roofing and a young man that tried for a big commission on my dime. Burkholder's was paid to remove an old fiberglass tub in our primary bathroom and replace it with a…read moretiled shower enclosure, They were also paid to replace the old floor with luxury vinyl tile. Their price was high, but on par with other contractors. Burkholder's sales staff is very professional and their installer is very skilled. However, there were issues. When the installer cut out the old fiberglass shower enclosure, he did nothing to contain the dust. He did not hang plastic or use an air filtration system. Also, he did not have enough tarps to cover the entire floor, so roughly one third of the floor was not protected. Before the installer was about to grout the shower, I learned he was planning to grout the corners and other areas of a shower where dissimilar construction materials meet. Having done many home improvement projects over the years, I was fairly confident those areas should be caulked and not grouted. But I wanted to be certain, so I called the grout manufacturer, Laticrete. I spoke to two technical representatives (one used to work as a professional tile installer), and both advised against grouting those areas because the grout will crack. So, I told the installer to use color matched caulk instead of grout in those areas. He said Burkholder's has never had a problem with the grout cracking, but they would order the caulk that matches the grout. When I returned later to check on his progress, I noticed the entire shower was grouted. I asked him about that and he said the owner instructed him to grout the entire shower and caulk over those areas later. Applying caulk on top of grout is also wrong and something I confirmed with Laticrete. Grout is a porous surface, so there is a high likelihood the caulk will separate from the grout and mold will form under the caulk. I questioned the owner about this in a text and he wrote, "We always caulk after grouting, with no issues." Not true, according to the installer. They never caulk their tiled shower enclosures. The owner knew what he was doing was wrong, but did it anyway. I could have insisted that Burkholder's remove the grout and replace it with color matched caulk, but I was concerned they would do a poor job, just to make a point. So, I asked them to warranty the grout against cracking for 10 years. As expected, they would only agree to warranty the grout for 17 months. The normal warranty is 12 months. After the job was finished, I asked Burkholder's for their MHIC license number, and they could not produce one. In Maryland, unless you are a subcontractor performing work for an MHIC licensed contractor, you must have an MHIC license to do home improvements. That includes bathroom remodels and installing flooring, other than carpet. If you decide to use Burkholder's, make sure they are licensed to do the work you want them to perform. Also, know the law and insist they follow it. Last September Tony came alone to install our free-standing tub and floor mount faucet, a 2-person…read morejob. The tub is only held down by the drain and moves very easily when empty. The floor-mounted faucet installation was worse than I could've imagined. To start, he used a black Sharpie on our new tile, marking where he would cut the hole. Luckily, I went in to check on things while he was in the basement and discovered he was planning to cut the hole too far into the corner, which would have meant moving the tub, just so the water would make it into the tub. Then, the hole he cut into the tile was too large. To make matters worse, he used white caulk to fill the holes that weren't covered by the faucet base plate. Also, the faucet leans noticeably (see pic of level against it). Soon after he left, we discovered it was leaking. We also discovered he'd taken our brushed nickel overflow cover, which he was supposed to swap with the chrome cover, as well as the chrome drain he removed to install the brushed nickel drain. My guess is he was hurrying to leave before my husband returned home to see his sloppy work. We called him back to stop the leak and to return the overflow and drain. I want to ask him if that sloppy installation would be acceptable in his home, if he was paying someone his hard-earned money to do it. I paid him, but really shouldn't have. Now we have to uninstall all of it and hire someone else to replace the ruined tile and reinstall the faucet, properly. The pictures say it all. Unless you just want pipes installed, look elsewhere.

We were looking for a high efficiency heat pump water heater and decided…read moreon a GE Profile Geospring heat pump unit which had an MSRP of $2900 (which should include markup) according to the GE website. We contacted A+ Plumbing because they were an authorized GE dealer and looked to have good reviews. They ordered one for us and contacted us when it came in to schedule installation. We never received a quote, we figured it should be around MSRP. On day of installation price was not discussed when they arrived so we were shocked when they completed and gave us the invoice with a charge for the unit of $4748 not the expected $2900. The cost of labor seemed fair to us and they were clean, neat and quick but we were SHOCKED at the invoice total. We were in a hurry to leave for an appointment, and with the heater installed, we felt all we could do was pay and get going. To further the pricing issue, my brother was so impressed with our water heater he ordered one online using our EXACT model number and received the same water heater for $1900. In fact, there are a number of appliance dealers on- line that are in the $2000 to $2500 range. When I contacted the owner of A+ Plumbing, he defended the price charged as middle man mark up and said that the unit my brother purchased would have been inferior because it was a different model number. Again, it is the exact same unit as there is no trailing letters like you would see if it had been manufactured as a specifically for a chain such as Costco, Wayfair, or Amazon. I did ask what A+'s cost was and they said they would check but we have not heard back. So, based on what we know, we were charged 165% mark-up above MSRP and roughly 240% of what we could have paid for the unit online.

Rather than mill up their mistake and resurface the drive correctly, Slonaker's poorly patched up the mess. Now, almost three years later, it looks terrible. New cracks emerge all the time. Other contractors estimate that the $5,130 Slonaker paving job is going to cost us up to $25,000 to fix. I cannot recommend Slonaker. Addendum: The owner has replied to my initial review and fabricated details about a tree being the cause for cracks. This is inaccurate, and certainly would not account for asphalt cracking all over the driveway, or the uncured "goo" in several locations on the drive. Plus, the job was under warranty, as per the contract. As for his crew spilling sealant all over the street in front of my neighbor's home, I'm surprised he admitted to it. I had not even mentioned that episode in an effort to keep my review focused on the major issue. But my neighbor was furious, and the incident is another example of Slonaker's bungling. The crew, who arrived six hours late, decided that hosing down the spilled sealant with water, which flowed into, and fouled, Craig's Run, was the ideal way to deal with the situation. We are very disappointed. We stand by my original conclusion: we cannot recommend Slonaker's.
