I've been taking my car to Master Mechanic for a few years now, and I have always found them to be honest, easy to talk to, and genuinely acting in my best interest. I don't know a lot about cars except that I need one for a commute, but the staff here are excellent and explain things so that I understand them and can make the best decisions for my car. I'm writing this review today specifically because I had a really amazing experience yesterday - I'd brought my car in to get the brakes checked and it turned into an all-day thing because the rotors needed to be replaced. Without getting into detail that might have other people asking for the special treatment I got, they made sure I got home so that I could finish up my workday, and REALLY went out of their way to do so. Car stuff's always going to be expensive - I'm not sure I'd trust cut-rate brake service, anyway - but their pricing is always reasonable and well-explained, and I have never gone away feeling like they've done something I didn't need or that I'd paid for something silly. I took my Honda Accord in to the High Pak shop to find out why my engine light was on. I asked Kevin on the desk to please find out what was wrong with the engine. At that time I specifical ask not once but twice for the mechanic to check fluids ( oil, automatic transmission fluid, power steering fluid) . When I got the phone call from Kevin about how much the repair would be , I asked if the fluids were check. I got a big O Ya we did. They are fine. I asked also if the maintenance light could be turned off. When I go the car the maintenance light was still on. I checked the fluids myself and automatic transmission fluid and the power steering fluid were low. The only thing this shop is good at that you can trust is them making out the bill. I brought my car on June 16 for oil/filter change and tire rotation. Master Mechanic High Park was recommended. When I was picking up my car, they told me that they are unable to change the oil filter for some reason. Since the oil filter was not changed , I was forced to go to Lexus dealer garage to change the oil filter. You can imagine my surprise, when Lexus mechanic told me that tires were not rotated either! As you can see , on the Master Mechanic invoice one of two items listed is "rotated tires". I called Master Mechanic, they ask me to come back for rotation. BUT, ONCE I HAVE BEEN LIED TO, MY TRUST IS LOST. Lexus also changed the oil filter without any problems. I DO NOT RECOMMENDED MASTER MECHANIC HIGH PARK. They used to be my mechanic but I found that whenever I wanted to bring in my car, even for something as routine as an oil change, there would be a wait of two or three weeks. I suppose that means they're popular but it's not a great way to run a business. read more

I stopped in there once with low power steering fluid. They filled it for free. When it became obvious that there was a persistent leak, I took it to them to repair. They diagnosed the issue and let me know that the part would take a while to get. They proposed an alternative solution that, because it was a leak in a fairly generic metal tube, would fix it right away (i.e. not using the Toyota tube but just making one from similar parts). It was fixed. They alerted me to a smaller and much less urgent leak in the rack and pinion (and the commensurately higher cost to fix). A couple of weeks later, I got a call asking me if everything was still OK. Overall, very positive experience. read more

Customer service so-so, prices rather high, quality of work OK. I had a group deal voucher that I used for an oil change at this garage. When they were done, they told me my tires weren't "round" which was a type of lingo that I found to be a tad odd. It turns out that they were worn unevenly as they were trying to explain. I didn't get a chance to ask the mechanic what he recommend, after having told me that I needed new tires and that the tires that fit on my rims were very expensive (they didn't recommend any, they just told me they'd be expensive). I asked the receptionist what she thought might've caused it after I was done trying to make sense of what I was just told in my head. After saying I likely need to change my struts, she called another mechanic as the one who had worked on my car was busy working on the next car, and he said that I'd likely need an alignment. He told me that I should get it checked and likely done, and he told me he gets his alignment done twice a year which seemed a bit excessive. When I asked how much checking the alignment would cost, he said it'd be $50 for checking it and another $50 for doing it if need-be. I mentioned my winter tires at some point during the conversation, so at the end, he suggested doing the alignment when switching to my winter tires. I would've liked if the initial tech gave me the cause of the uneven wear and at least a reference as to where I could get replacement tires if this shop doesn't have my size. Ideally, he would've shown me where the issue was/what it looked like, but I guess that'd be going over the top in terms of service. When I looked at the regular price for an oil change on the wall, they started at around $70 from what I recall. So all-in-all, I wouldn't return to this shop as I didn't get any value as compared to a fairly priced shop such as Active Green & Ross or Costco. EDIT (Dec 2017): After posting this review, the owner of the shop has harassed me numerous times to remove my negative review as it was inaccurate, even going to the point of accusing me of never having visited her shop. I feel very threatened by her at this point, and I would avoid this venue at all costs, as I wonder how a customer would be treated if they came directly to her with their feedback. Furthermore, the comment posted in response to this review does not at all address the concerns mentioned about terms used such tires not being round (I am still curious as to what shape the mechanic that made this comment thought they were). read more

I'm not really educated when it comes to the world of automobile repair, so I've always steered clear from leaving reviews on mechanics. I've tried a bunch over the years though - whether trying to find something with quick turnaround, convenient locations, good pricing, or even simply based on good reviews. I can genuinely say that I've never found anything that really made me comfortable as I do with this Master Mechanic. Their prices may be a bit higher than other places, but I'm not even going to dock them a Yelp star as for some reason I've found comfort in the fact that they are independently franchised (so they have a level of local responsibility to keep me happy and retain my business instead of going to another location), yet they have a corporate affiliation to stand behind their work (Master Mechanic has a longer warranty period than the Consumer Protection Act dictates they need to). I haven't had many recurring issues from work done here, so I've kept coming back and would give them the thumbs up to anyone else needing auto repairs in the west end. read more

I had a groupon like deal I had purchased several years ago that I never got around to using. I finally found the time and was surprised they still accepted the coupon without any questions. The staff were super friendly and polite to deal with. They gave me a call to tell me the service was done and could pick it up whenever and didn't charge me extra for the synthetic oil which they could have. I took my 2004 Toyota Echo to Master Mechanic at 2 Howard Park Ave to get an emission test so i could renew my license this month. This was a good choice because my car FAILED the test with three separate red flags, all caused primarily by a faulty valve in the catalytic converter. The device needs to be replaced, and it could end up costing me $$$ parts and labour. Thankfully Josie Candito the business manager informed me of my options, which included buying a special dispensation certificate from MTO for about $80 dollars or thereabouts. Its sad, but fixing the car properly would cost more than I can afford right now. .. When my car was up on the hoist, Mike went around and checked my tires' air pressure and filled them as nec., I had them change the oil too when my car was aloft and Josie gave me a first aid kit that is darn handy to have. And Mike topped up the remainder of my levels when the car came down. So I left happy, even though I got a big dose of bad news. I'm a polluter! So now I know that I have to get my tail pipe fixed, sooner rather than later, for the good of the environment. read more

I've used this shop a number of times over the last couple of years. It seem to be a family-owned business which is always a plus for me. I find them friendly, upfront and honest. Getting in is tough in a busy shop but they are always willing to work around my schedule and almost always finish the work before the promised time. read more

If you're looking for a great auto repair shop that gives you value, service and great advice, please continue reading my review as it could save you some time and headaches.... I brought my car to Master Mechanic High Park two years ago when they did brake work and fixed another safety issue with my car, they advised me on another issue (which the dealer fixed for me at no charge because it was their defect), but most importantly, they kept me in the loop with status and advice, and they fixed the car in a very reasonable amount of time. What more could I ask for? Maybe the convenience of a mechanic closer to home that costs less? (please continue reading) So earlier this year, I tried a small shop (also nearby) that had 5 stars on Yelp (but not for long) and they were great, fast and cheap like all the reviews said, until I gave them a problem they couldn't easily solve. Long story short, a good mechanic could have fixed 30 of these problems in the time they took, and they would have been able to tell me exactly what it would have cost from the get-go so I could have made better decisions regarding keeping or ditching my car. In the end it was a major cluster f**k that left me frustrated, further in debt; and definitely not where I wanted to be. Shortly afterwards, the car broke down again, with a different but related problem to the first (electrical). This time, I simply had the car towed to this Master Mechanic. I also sent them the recent history via email so they would be up to date. After inspecting the car, Rui called me to explain the problem, the mess of wires they found under the hood, the relay that was submerged in water, and the cost to repair. They did it, it was done before the date I said I needed the car back by, and the best part.. no headaches. Some reviewers here have found this automotive shop a bit pricey. I think this shop pretty much in line with other chain automotive shops, but definitely pricier than the small shop owner who cuts corners, uses inferior parts, doesn't offer written estimates, works for cash, etc. Being a former business owner in the trades, I can verify that if you do things right, issue quotes and invoices, make payroll deductions and have business overhead (the way a real business does), you won't be able to offer cheap rates. The same rules apply to mechanics. Of course, you can get lucky and find a decent independent shop that is cheap and great at fixing your car in a timely manner, or you can just try this Master Mechanic where you will be advised on turnaround time, cost, and advice to boot. I highly recommend Master Mechanic on Howard Park Avenue. The customer service is EXCELLENT. I know nothing about vehicles and the staff here are incredibly honest and reliable. You get to speak directly with the mechanic who is working on your vehicle and if they feel that a repair can wait, without compromising safety, they will let you know. They always investigate the problem and call you to let you know what the options are and how much each option will cost. If you need to think about what route to take they never pressure you. All of the staff are very responsive and reliable and when things go wrong with your vehicle they really do bend over backwards to get you on your way as quickly as possible. They also call you a day or two later just to make sure everything is okay and see if you have any questions.
