Great massage and will most likely return. The location in Davis square is convenient being near the T or if you plan on walking. I drove, so it was a little tough finding parking. The studio is on the third floor of a building and shares bathrooms with the other tenants of the building. That was the only real negative of the experience. A dirty semi-public bathroom. There is some initial paperwork before your first appointment, it took less than 5 minutes. Then you wait in the lounge area for your masseuse. I got the therapeutic massage and it was just what I needed. The massage therapist checked in with me about the pressure and wasn't chatty. It was bliss. Eva was really wonderful - she is an amazing masseuse who helped my back pain. I was really disappointed with management. When I booked the appointment, it was not communicated that the clock starts the minute you check in. I arrived 10 minutes late due to needing to walk 1 hour in 90 degree heat to get to the appointment, and was offered to use the restroom beforehand. Again, no communication that "my clock" had started. I was taken to the room, then taken back to the front desk to get my temperature checked because they forgot to do it at the start. By the time I talked to Eva and got onto the table, it was 30 minutes into my 1-hour appointment. The massage, while amazing, only lasted 30 minutes, and I was charged for the full hour. When trying to push back, I was offered a $10 credit for my next appointment. I'm all for being understanding in the pandemic, but this should be a 2-way Street. I also understand increasing prices due to PPE but to be charged double for a service without communicating the policy is sneaky and not excusable. Jessenia's massages are wonderful. She's strong and intuitive and has a relaxed presence. I see her regularly for general stress reducing massages and muscle tightness. Just called to schedule an appointment. I was excited by the great reviews and I've been in terrible neck pain. Really rude receptionist picked up the phone. I asked when her soonest availability was and she offered a male provider, I spoke up to let her know that I'd prefer a female if possible. She then said "well if you'd let me finish my sentence I was going to say..." Is this how you talk to people who are about to spend a $100 at your business? Really awful manners. The key to rendering a man-on-man massage un-gay is to make like a corpse. This was my second massage at MTW and I'm realizing that completely giving up control is the key to getting the most out of the experience. Go limp. Not only does it turn down the latent homoeroticism, but it allows the therapist to manipulate your joints and tissues much better. As a millennial douche living in the Northeast in the year 2016, switching off the need to control every little thing is hard for me. People in Boston are ambitious, Type-A, organized, and often detail-oriented, myself included. But this is precisely why switching off while someone else helps you decompress is all the more necessary. The person who did that for me today was Ammon. Like the first therapist, he had a calming presence and did his job really well. Also like the first therapist, he was a dude. But unlike the first experience, I was a lot more comfortable this time. I'm generally not comfortable having strangers touch me but on this visit, I was better able to tell myself that these are skilled professionals. I could rave about how Ammon opened up my shoulders and back but you should go and see for yourself. However, I will sing his praises for stretching out my hamstrings. I did a leg workout with heavy weights a few days ago and I've barely been able to walk for the last two days. After Ammon stretched my legs out, I could actually put weight on them like a normal person. If you're nervous about strangers touching you, don't be. It's a licensed therapy place, not an exotic parlor owned by Tony Soprano. Once your face and the donut pillow get acquainted, it doesn't matter whether your therapist has ovaries or testicles. You can't see them and you're getting an elbow in your back either way. It always feels great after. read more

I've only had a few massages in my life and have recently come to the conclusion that my life is empty without them. Unsure where to go, I turned to Yelp. A quick look made me realize that Massage Therapy Works was my best bet in the Davis area, if not all of Somerville. I booked my appointment with Orion. Even his name commands respect!! The facility was very clean and the waiting area was welcoming and well kept. Shortly after arriving, Orion introduced himself and took me to the room where my massage would take place. He took his time and asked what areas needed work. (I had tweaked my back doing deadlifts in the gym and he took note). Orion asked me what would make me comfortable (music, no music, and he even gauged if I wanted to talk or just enjoy the work in relaxing silence). Before I knew it, my 60 minutes was up and I was feeling great. Orion did a great job addressing my muscle soreness and tightness and relaxed me after a long week. My only complaint is that I wish I had started getting massages here sooner! I had a 90 minute therapeutic massage by Hanna yesterday and it was hands down the best massage I've ever had. My husband also got a 90 minute therapeutic massage by Jeffery which he loved. We both got exactly what we needed from our respective body workers. Hanna worked on all the places I specified, plus other areas I didn't realize needed work. As someone who has a history of trauma, feeling comfortable while laying naked on a table isn't always the most relaxing experience. But Hanna helped me feel incredibly calm, comfortable, and emotionally restored during her massage. read more

So, I hate to write a bad review because I'veheard such great things about Massage Therapy Works but I would give it 2.5 stars if I had the option. I scheduled a 90 minute deep tissue massage last week and was really exciting about treating myself since it's been almost a year since I've gotten one. This was my first time at Massage Therapy Works (I now live in somerville) but long story short, I was disappointed. I scheduled a deep tissue massage and felt that I got just the regular therapeutic massage. Mind you, the deep tissue is more expensive. I was relaxed and my masseuse was professional but I asked for more pressure and he didn't seem to do that. He also didn't give me any feedback at the end of the visit. Maybe this is not normal but after all my other massages, the masseuse has given me some feedback, without having to ask for it. i told myself, well, maybe it wasn't deep tissue but lets wait a day or two to see how I feel and see if I'm still as tense as before.. same tension. Scheduled a 90 minute session for couples massage instruction with my partner. Orion did a truly fantastic job. His manner was relaxed and comfortable, and he shared many specific tools for delivering a great massage. In a short period of time my partner and I learned about finding a comfortable stance for delivering a massage, finding the tension in someone's back, and tracing specific muscles or areas of tension. Orion had a ton of knowledge to share, and through the process of teaching also spent a lot of time working on both of our backs. We both left the session feeling amazing. I am a person who has never enjoyed massages and in fact I only started going to MTW out of total desperation. I have a 20 year old sacroiliac injury that leaves me in significant pain periodically. The two therapists I had were terrific and I settled on working with one of them because it just "clicked!" Wonderful experience at Massage Therapy Works last night. The waiting area/entry way is beautiful - warm, comforting, relaxing, fragrant. The woman at the front desk was welcoming and kind, and provided me with a detailed health assessment to fill out, so I'd recommend arriving at least a few minutes early for your first appointment. The questions seemed very relevant and, while I don't have any medical concerns or issues, I appreciated the chance to vocalize them if I had. Orion took me in a little early, which I also appreciated. He is everything that you could want a massage therapist to be - very calming, very kind, very professional. I am a quiet person so I greatly appreciated that he did not force any type of conversation; he mentioned that I should speak up if anything was uncomfortable or if his pressure was too strong or not strong enough, but other than that, he let me unwind in silence. The massage was very thorough, and while I was so relaxed during it that I nearly fell asleep, I am sore in a few key places today, so I know that all of my knots and tightness were addressed appropriately. I got a 2 hour integrated massage from Blain. I have chronic pain and old injuries and have had many massages around the world. This is one of the best I've ever had. He did a lot of fascial stretching and seemed to have an intuitive grasp of what areas needed to be focused on and I could tell he had great knowledge of anatomy. I don't live in the area but I will definitely be back because it helped me that much. Before the massage I could only walk 20 minutes without pain, and then today I walked an hour and felt great. read more

Almost felt like I was heading to a dental office. But when you arrive at the door you feel like you are entering a spa. Such a pleasant and peaceful environment. It kind of pains me to write this, but I actually didn't enjoy my time here. I got a gift certificate for my birthday for a 90 minute massage. When I went to schedule the appointment online, I noticed there were so many options and not all of them made sense "relaxing with extra pressure" "deep tissue, extra pressure" etc. . . Huh? So I signed up for something my gift certificate would cover. Upon entering though, I was asked to sign a waiver stating that I'd leave the type of massage up to my therapist and just pay for whatever he gave me. Normally, I'd refuse but it's my birthday and what's a few extra bucks. . . plus I was seeing the owner, you don't tip the owner. . it would all even out. Alright, here's where my real issue begins. I had a tough time finding the place and got there a couple minutes late. . maybe five. My bad, sorry guys. I quickly filled out the forms and scurried into the room. it's now 10 minutes into my appointment time. The next 30 minutes ish was Richard talking to me and asking questions. I'm fine with that, but let's keep it brief and/or while I'm on the table and you're finding things wrong with me. However, I assumed that a 90 minute massage was still going to be 90 minutes of, well, massage. It wasn't. I finally got on the table 40 minutes into the appointment and got a 50 minute massage. The massage itself was good, however I have an interesting "affliction" When parts of my body start to relax through massage, they stop being numb and start to hurt more. In this case I had a splitting headache on the table, I told him about it and he felt around for a second and said "well we don't have time" Now here's the kicker: When I got rung up I was charged for 90 minutes of addons, so I spent $50 out of pocket plus the full amount of a 90 minute massage . . .for a 50 minute massage that left me with a splitting headache. I'm giving one extra star because the work that was done was top-notch. . . still. I'm not happy with the services provided. read more

I hate to give a review based on one not-the-best experience, but that is all that I have to work with. MTW is full up with amazing practitioners, every one, and I can only assume that my therapist (the owner) was having an off-day what with the move that he was supervising at the time. A colleague of mine had recommended Richard as an excellent and intuitive practitioner, but that was not the experience that I had. I booked online and arrived early for my appointment to an empty office and proceeded to fill out the paperwork. Good health history form, but the bit about "integrative" body work or "deep tissue" versus relaxing was confusing to me, especially since there were so many options on the website for styles and I had already picked energetic bodywork, which I would assume is pretty self-explanatory. When I got into the room after the interview, Richard proceeded to give a very intense deep tissue masaage. When I told him that what he was doing was hurting me, he responded by saying "Haven't you ever had deep tissue massage before?" and swinging my leg around to try to get my psoas, a core muscle, to release the tension that it clearly didn't want to release at that moment. He proceeded to tell me a story about overcoming pain with the mind. I signed up for "energetic bodywork". Physical pain is clearly not what I was looking for. I suppose I should have been more forceful in trusting and asserting myself and my needs in this session, but I assume that a therapist is going to be present and attentive in a session with me. I didn't even care that in the 90 minute session there wasn't time for full body after having my legs beat up. I understand that what my body does with body work is not the therapist's responsibility, but the morning after this massage I was left in searing pain throughout my low back and into my legs, unable to rise from the couch and unable to go to work for two days. I allowed my therapist to push my body too far, trusting his over 10 years of experience in the field of massage. A few weeks after this massage I sent an email to the info account of the business saying that I was uncomfortable with the way that my massage went. I received no response. This business has a number of excellent therapists, many of whom I've worked with in the past, and I'm sure that Richard is similarly excellent most of the time, but I was very disappointed with my experience here and wanted to make sure that I was heard. I already tried to not make this public and have every intention of taking down this review once an acknowledgement has been gained. Please don't anybody avoid this business on the basis of this review. read more

My boyfriend is a freakin' genius for getting me a gift certificate for a one-hour massage. Most relaxing Christmas present ever. Yeah, I saved a gift certificate for like four months. I wanted to wait until THE DAY I NEEDED IT MOST. Today was that day - I was stressed, it was rainy, some douchebag parked too close to my driveway, you get the idea. It was time. I've never had a professional massage before, so I came in not having any idea of what to do (am I wearing clothes? do I have to make chitchat with the masseuse? Answers: No and No). My appointment was with Cara, and she was very sweet and gave a loooooovely full body massage. Seriously, her hands might be magic, and I left feeling loose, relaxed, and refreshed. Sure, it was still rainy, and that car was still parked way too close, but after that massage I was able to take a deep breath, open an umbrella, and get that motherfucker towed. This was the strangest massage I have ever had. And probably the most expensive. My tall order: a deep tissue massage. Please note: have certain condition that masseuse would need to be mindful of in therapy. I had used their online booking system which is a wonderful thing day-of when you just need a stranger to dig his hands into your back so that you can feel better. Bob, the massage therapist, greeted me at the door. The other practitioner was very kind, as well. The office was clean and very zen. We were off to a good start. Then, we entered the room with the table. A very ugly black floral sheet set from the '80s awaited me. I'm not usually a snob about this - if you had '80s sheets on your bed, I would totally sleep in it - but it struck me that this was a business. Therefore, I expected something more modern and less gaudy, n'ah mean? There was no music playing in the room. There was nothing to make me feel at home. Bob talked to me about my condition and preference, and then it was time to strip down and get situated. Then, my worst fears in surrendering my body face down to a stranger were realized. Bob talked to me throughout the entire massage. Not without a few minutes of silent interludes. But the chatter was pretty much continuous. For some reason, I thought this was a rule of thumb. Don't talk to your client when they're naked and face down on a table. Evidently not, b/c Bob wanted to talk about all of my physical ailments right then and there. His methodology did not relax me. It didn't hurt me, and he was mindful of that, but I was not for a fleeting moment ever teetering on that lovely nearly comatose state of relaxation. Even after an hour, the massage didn't feel complete. One of my arms was barely touched and the shoulder work was pretty paltry. This clinic has you sign a declaration before treatment that says whether or not you will allow the massage therapist to keep going with the massage after the allotted hour - whatever the charge may be - if an hour is not sufficient to treat your particular problem(s). I had never seen a kind of release like this before. It seemed practical at the time, but then I got to thinking...I've had many, many massages. All of them an hour. All of them very adequate. It seems to me that this clinic is all about the benjamins, which substantiates why I do not plan to return anytime soon. read more

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews such as weird 70s decor and ugly sheets but when I went there for a massage I didn't encounter any of that. It looks like they've had an update or two since 07. First of all the sheets they had were gorgeous soft cream sheets that felt like silk on my skin. The decor was very zen to me, lots of paintings and photographs of natural wonders. Sure it's a small place, but the layout feels more cozy than cramped. Two of the massage rooms have skylights all along the ceilings, there's nothing like getting a massage in the sunlight, and the temperature is always warm and welcoming. The massage I had was wonderful and peaceful, which is exactly what I needed after a long plane ride. The therapists there are warm, diverse, always friendly and very well educated in the healing arts. I left there smelling of lavender oil and feeling as relaxed as can be. The location is really great too. Poor Little Rich Girl and Diesel Cafe are right next door so when you are done with your massage you can wake yourself back up with some thrift store shopping and hot tea! read more

Went for deep-tissue massage on Friday and was very impressed. I got the deal currently advertised and though it didn't specifically stipulate that deep tissue massage was included, Jared said he would include it for me as he is relatively new and didn't want to charge full whack for something he was not quite as experienced at. I went in with a really painful left hip, however once the massage was underway, it was apparent that my sacrem (sp?! )and ITB was also really really tight as were my calves and the sides of my shins. Suffice it to say it was not the most painless massage ever, but that is exactly as to be expected when having deep tissue massage and it was way less painful than some I have had! Jared listened to when it was becoming too sore and was careful not to overwork the muscles, this resulted in very little residual pain the next day and no bruising whatsoever. We did run over quite a bit, but I guess that we both underestimated how much work needed done and also with Jared being less experienced meant that he was a bit less quick. He was however, really cool about it and wasn't going to charge me. Instead, I asked him to finish off the rest of the second hour and paid him for both hours - he had put in such a good job and the rate was so reasonable that I was happy to continue the second hour for him to work a bit on my back and shoulders. All in all a great experience - I would certainly go back there again and would have no hesitation in asking for Jared. I possibly would also like to try some of the more experienced massage therapists who might have more techniques and ideas, but I cannot fault the service I had on Friday - a definite place to try when you ache all over! read more

Holy poop on a stick-I mostly get massages whenever I buy one via groupon. I go sporadically-every couple months when i hurt my hip or am overly stressed out a work. But, this was a different situation. I was HURT. I really killed myself in fitness bootcamp and was having trouble walking, siting, bending over, everything. So, yelp told me about this place down the road from where I live. It was the most expensive massage I have ever paid for, but worth every incredibly hard-earned PENNY i gave him for the session! Jared was amazing-informative, relaxed, super friendly...i ended up with a 'body work' session instead of a massage but either way he worked some serious magic on me. He's lucky I didnt hug him and never let go at the end. I hobbled in there, basically unable to move anything without severe pain, and walked out of there feeling like my body had an upgrade an hour later. He was more talkative and friendly than i'm used to (which in this situation was absolutely needed and welcomed), he taught me about what I was doing to harm my body, how to stretch in the upcoming days, and how to teach my boyfriend to stretch me to help make sure the session wasn't just a band-aid over a bullet hole. I'm a massage slut-I go where its cheapest and never really see the same person twice. But, this man has converted me. I am now committed to Jared. Back off, ladies. He's mine!!! read more

I've had a lot of massages at places all over this fine metropolis, so I feel qualified to judge both people and places. I've been going to MTW for about 2 years and I love it! My super favorite massage therapist left last summer, but I'm determined to find a new person there because they are just so much better and cheaper than other places. This is not the place to go if you're looking for a froo-froo spa experience. That's what Newbury St. is for. MTW is small and comfortable, but no-frills. But if you're looking for serious quality and people who are really experienced, educated, and passionate about their work, then this is the place to go in the Boston area! MTW has a wide range of services including therapeutic massage, prenatal and sports massage, myotherapy, craniosacral, shiatsu, and even accupunture! One stop body-work shopping! And a word on pricing- currently MTW charges $80 for an hour theraputic massage. Places downtown usually charge at least $90 for 50 minutes and one (it rhymes with bettabowl) actually charges $110 (WTF?)! Bob didn't just rub my back, he used a few different modalities and really sought out the areas that needed attention. This was a particularly difficult review to write. On the one hand, the MTW staff is really nice, affordable, and got me a last minute appointment when I was really hurting. So kudos for that. On the other hand, my massage was really average. This is probably an excellent place for either massage newbies, or someone just looking for a light, relaxing massage. I, however, came here looking to get some serious knots worked on. I guess there was some miscommunication, because I made an appt for a Thai Bodywork session, but when I arrived I was scheduled for a Theraputic massage. My masseur, Loretta, offered to incorporate some Thai techniques, which was appreciated, but for an additional $10. I'm not going to complain about an extra ten bucks, but I find the add-on marketing technique tacky and tasteless-- just call it a $90 massage, not $80 plus ten for extras. Anyway, while it was by no means a bad massage, and some of my kinks were worked out, my main problem area that I went in to get worked on in the first place didn't feel improved at all. I will consider coming back here for maintenance massages, but when a deep, intense session is required, I'll look elsewhere. read more

I make it a policy to visit someplace at least twice before Yelping, a policy which benefits MTW. My first visit was months ago and unremarkable; I met with a woman whose name I forget who gave a decent massage but did not impress me with her massage knowledge. [If I get a sports massage, I'm pretty unimpressed with people who are unfamiliar with foam rolling.] Anyway, the massage was fine but nothing spectacular, and I continued touring for a new place. Fast forward to MTW's advertising a pre-marathon special and my willingness to give the place a second chance. Four sessions with Richard later and I can now say I truly know pain. I've run multiple marathons, participated in truly epic bike rides, hiked mountains and canyons. But nothing hurts as much as Richard leaning a tenth of his bodyweight on a tight tendon or his elbow on my quads. As other reviewers have noted, though, it's a wonder drug that is worth the pain price. Plusses: online reservations, frequent specials, knowledgeable staff, respect for clients. So there's this really cool thing they offer, where they put you on a list and then send you an email if there is a last minute opening that day and you get 20% off a 45, 60, or 75 minute massage.Well they have a last minute opening every week so this is my new strategy for getting what I need without the financial guilt. Through this last minute process, I've tried a bunch of other therapists. Their staff is really big, and though they have slightly different styles, they are fairly consistent. I've had about an 80% satisfaction rate with my random sampling. However, my latest recommendation is Orion. He's helped me conquer acute wrist, hand, upper back and neck problems, and hip pain. The man gives a kind of an intense massage, but it gets the junk out. Other good people to try: Jill, Jared, Bob, Jeffrey, and Kris (as I've said before). But today, Orion is my favorite! read more

The second time, I'm training for a half marathon, doing the insanity work out and will begin weight lifting next week. In addition, on my morning run my Achilles hurt so much I actually had to stop and walk. I did the sports massage. Jeffrey showed me how to do some stretches and then massaged out my legs, back, and shoulders ("always the shoulders when I know the person is a student."). He even showed me how to do the stretches on my own even though we did them as partners. He explained to me why my sitting job and my active lifestyle aren't meshing so well. The sitting makes my muscles contract in a way that the active life style doesn't particularly like. So the stretches will help me to alleviate the tension on my own. Their quality is up there with my favorite massage place in Boston, Boston Bodyworker, but much cheaper and accessible from my house. They have a student program that I'm looking into and it's highly tempting. It's I think like $70 a month, they charge you automatically. You book a massage every month and there yah go. On a whim, I went looking for a new massage place. Not that there was anything wrong with other places I had been, but I was looking to try something new. I came across MTW on yelp and the 90+ 5 stars reviews reeled me in. I took a look at their website and was impressed with the fact that the schedule was posted online, they had photos/bios of their employees, and a list of various massage services all reasonably priced. It was really the option of "extra pressure" that impressed me. I knew I needed it. I called for an appt and was able to schedule one with Buki for the next day. When I arrived, the staff was friendly and I filled out the requesite paperwork. I liked that you were given the option of approving extra pressure before the massage started. It was stated as such that if the masseus (i cant spell) felt as though you needed it, you were giving them permission. That way you weren't interrupted during the massage. Love it! Buki and I talked about my jobs, aches and pains, etc. I could tell that she was really listening and concocting the best course of action to deal with my weak and pain riddled muscles. The massage itself was amazing. Five minute in I knew that she was going to be my new massage therapist. The pressure was perfect and she hit just the right places. Afterwards she was able to tell me excerises that I could do to help strengthen certain areas. She alsowas able to tell me where I need to work on developing stronger muscles to help alleviate some of the pain that i was having. I was overly impressed with her. She was phenominal. Although they experienced different things while at MTW, I would say that both Kendra & Rinn's reviews paint a good picture of this place. The prices are...well, pretty much what you would expect. The decor is...very much stuck in the late 70s. What is important to note is this: The vibe is definitely more 'therapy' and not at all 'spa/relax' type of deal. They will talk to you during your time...explaining what they are doing, stretches & exercises you can do to loosen up more, etc. If you are looking for that, this place is great. If you just want to relax & get a soothing rub...you *will* be disappointed. I'll definitely go back here, perhaps after some extra hard training or my first triathlon...just not when I want to indulge after a stressful week at work. read more
