I booked a 90-minute massage session with Sophie and it was great. Before going into the massage room, I had to check in and complete a questionnaire, which was easy & straight forward. For the massage, I requested the focus to be on my back and shoulders due to some aches and soreness. The massage itself was wonderful, not as relaxing as I had hoped. However, Sophie's technique was thorough and attentive. I had to request an adjustment in pressure a few times, but overall, it was a helpful and enjoyable massage. Customer service was excellent (I forgot the front desk person's name) and I didn't feel pressured to sign up for a membership or schedule a future appointment. My back and shoulder felt tight so I called to make an appointment. MARK was the only one available so I booked him. After I told him what which areas of my body needed worked on. He started feeling out the tension on areas that needed help the most. The next 90 mins were one of the best massages I've ever had. He eased into the tight lower back by starting to massage lightly and hard toward the end. He also helped me stretch. Even though I said to focus on shoulder and back, he found time to work on my other body parts like hamstrings as well. The 90mins went by quickly but I felt soooooo relaxed after the massages. I had a terrible neck ache and shoulder pain and decided it was time to get a massage. I have been a regular at Massage Envy but it had been awhile so I was surprised to see they had moved down the street from where I live on VanNess and Hayes, next to the Starbucks. I made the reservation only just 30minutes before my 11am appointment, I arrived 10 minutes early to answer a few questions about what I needed for treatment and a bit about my health and well being. I asked for a male and was greeted on time by Mark and taken to a room. We had a short discussion about what was going on with me and what Mark suggested. My appointment was for just 30 minutes, my shoulders and neck were treated well with just the right amount of pressure. I left feeling much better than when I arrived! It it wasn't for the fact that friend has been coming here for years I probably wouldn't have come due to the reviews ... which would have been a mistake. 1 - went with my daughter for her 1st facial. Since she under 18 I had to be in the room. They walked her through everything they're were doing... she loved it and her face glowed for days. And her acne was reduced dramatically 2- my facial was solid.. I don't get them often but enjoyed this a lot. A little to much moisturizer when I left but that was easy to wash off 3 staff were incredibly friendly and efficient 4- wish they had a water fountain or ambient music to make it a bit more spa like ... it's not a spa. But the waiting room is fine. We will be back for massages read more

I wouldn't normally be rah rah over a corporate joint but hey I needed a massage! They're located walking distance from my work, which is great. So I went to get a massage and try it out. Both times I've been now the massage was really good. And they have a really good membership deal. I don't wanna sound like I'm advertising for them but hey, it's not a bad deal. I just pay $95 a month and receive a massage every month. It's a good reminder for self-care. I mean $95 for an hour massage is a good deal and it carries over so it's not like a use it or lose type situation. Like if I don't get a massage for that month I could get it the next month or whatever I wanna do. or even gift the massage. And they've always been very nice to me. So far so good! read more

When I travel to San Francisco, I love popping into this location for a massage. It's conveniently located close to a few major hotels and easy to get to. I wish I had looked at reviews before booking this location. I had a facial and it was essentially 35 minutes of lotion being rubbed on my face with steam. Worst part was the esthetician used it for small talk. They really need a way to share that you don't want to talk for your session. I'm paying $100+ dollars to relax, not entertain you because you are bored. Please respect that. The desk staff was 10/10, and went out of her way to resolve my dissatisfaction. As a non-member hoping to convert to member, my massage was just blah... nothing special. I got no back massage in my lower back at all. My therapist seem to work the same exact spots over and over again... so many times, it helped run my time out. His favorite spot was my shoulder blades, half the areas of "focus" they ask you to mark went untouched. Also, once we get there, you are told they are taking 10min off the massage for dressing in the beginning and end. So really it's a 50 min massage. Most likely I will not be going back to massage envy. I'd rather pay $140 for a FULL 60 minutes at a real Spa that will cater to all my problem areas. 5/10 read more

Booked a last minute 60-minute massage on a Sunday. I booked with Rick and had a great experience. I'd never had a deep tissue massage and that's what he did. It was the "hurt so good" type of pain. He was very knowledgeable and respectful of my needs. I had some pain in my left scapula/neck area and he spent a lot of time focusing on that area. He had nice tip s and recommendations as well. Firstly - the massage I got this time was amazing. However .... 3 issues: 1. When I checked out and expected to have some credits on my account, the guy told me they weren't any. And that I owed $xx amount. When I inquired further he said oh there were some that expired last month. And he was rude about it. I was supposed to have credit for eight massages on my account, they expired because I waited for the last wave of Covid. Apparently I waited too long, my bad no problem. I was very unhappy with his lack of customer service. Apparently he doesn't think it's part of his job. 2. The massage I had last December was terrible. It was too firm of deep tissue for me, and I asked him to back off he told me it was good for me. Seemed like a reflexology place instead of massage envy. 3. And the place seems dirty. The experience began well with a friendly and helpful front desk. It quickly went downhill when the massage began with May. I specifically requested medium to firm pressure for neck, shoulders and back -- and indicated no scalp, legs, or arms. I know she never read the preferences sheet because I had to tell her each time she started on each area I had requested not be touched--and she still spent a good deal of time on legs. There was almost no neck massage, which I had indicated was the primary focus area and it was just rubbing rather than a massage focused on muscle groups. Truly the worst massage I've had. This is about trying just to get pricing. I was a member before, but let it go. I was trying to book and they do not offer rates publicly. You have to go through a multi step process and then they want your personal information. If your rates are not standard, just say that. It says rates vary by franchise....is that their way of collecting your information for one location so they can charge you the same if you go to a different location? Why is it stressful to book a massage. You know what, I don't think they actually want business, just data. Every other spa company is up front about prices and dont make you run around. I always request a deep tissue massage, but Thomas was the first massage professional who actually performed deep tissue! I went in with about a 7.5 pain level in my glutes. The massage was very painful at times, as it has to be to deal with the fascia, but it so worth! Immediately after the massage, my pain was down to a 0.5, if that. I was very surprised by the "market adjustment fee"! I am a member at Burlingame location and planned to visit their downtown location after a day of errands in the city. After a very nice message from Thomas I was informed I had an additional $20.00 up charge because we were in the city! What! ! I thought a membership meant I could go to any location. I've visited this location twice in the past few months and each time the experience left me feeling more stressed out than when I walked in. Both sessions started late and ended early, prices are very expensive for massages that did not make me feel good. I don't know why they ask for which areas I'd like them to focus on if they don't intend on focusing in those spots. I also didn't like that they would often grind their elbows into my bones. Holy cow was that painful! The second experience was Pema was one of the worst massages I've ever had and I couldn't wait for it to be over. RUN AWAY. While the therapists can be good (especially Julio), the company and its policies are AWFUL and should be avoided. After using a gift certificate for a massage there, I was high-pressured into buying an annual contract. It was like being with a used car salesman, the worst experience. I ended up buying it and regretted it immediately. Lots of fine print. DO NOT SIGN IT. There is NO WAY OUT of this contract. Repeat: There is NO WAY OUT of this contract. I lost my job and tried to cancel and they refused to allow it!!! The comment below makes me even more angry: I explained that I am 63, lost my job, sent a copy of the termination letter, and that I cannot find work. I asked to be released from the contract. DECLINED. There is ZERO compassion there. They are a machine and it sucks. I will never go back and I will never recommend this company. Hopefully these representatives won't have to experience a late in life job loss, and hopefully they won't be treated like crap like their company is treating me. Advice: Much better to just find a good independent therapist (trial and error) or a human-run spa that you like and book directly, as you want and need to. They don't understand the value of customer service. I hope they loose far more business from this review (and other similar disgruntled customers) than the few bucks they are sucking off of me until the contract ends. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE I've been getting massages on a weekly/bi weekly basis as a travel healthare provider/frontliner for over 10 years now. On 8/4/21, I was scheduled to meet TJ (all pressures) for a massage. My profile clearly states "medium pressure", and we discussed the goals of the session. TJ was not only rude, and spoke to me as if I was inferior, but refused to stop digging into my body. I kept saying it was too much, and was cringing. Four days later, and it still felt like he was digging into my body. Mind you, I have a high tolerance for pain. He kept asking if I'd ever had a massage before, what my experience has been - I said "excruciatingly painful" has never come to mind until today. I know the difference between a "good pain" to relieve a problem area vs TOO MUCH PRESSURE ELICITING UNBEARABLE PAIN. I was rudely told to get dressed. I asked TJ if he could provide a lighter pressure as he is listed as capable of all levels. He told me he has been doing this over 11 years, and will not work on me because I will not allow him to achieve the goals set forth. He went on and on - my biggest issue was his tone and body language. It was not only unneccessary, but rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional. If it wasnt a good match, theres a way to deliver the message. Anyway TJ told me to get dressed, and he and the manager would be waiting for me outside the door. I didn't take long to get dressed - walked out, and he nor a manager is anywhere in site. I had to wander to find my way back to the lobby. The assistant manager, "Solange" (not sure if that is the correct spelling), was the only person working in the front. I informed her of my disdain, she apologized, and sent me off with well wishes. I asked where the manager was, but Solange stated she was in a massage session herself. The manager, Jacqueline was supposed to call me about the matter by the next day at the latest. I NEVER was contacted. After working 10 straight days of 14+ hours, I just wanted a massage on my ONLY day off for the week - RUINED. WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE IVE EVER EXPERIENCED, and I've been to COUNTLESS massage envy locations. read more

I've been a massage envy customer for about 10 years and just canceled​ my membership due to this store. The massage therapists are hit and miss here, but the biggest issue is the random amount of money they want to charge on top of the monthly fee because they are located in San Francisco. Sometimes I'm told it's $40 extra and sometimes it's an extra $20 and the manager there Javier never seems to remember what he said the previous time. I moved to SF and he told me that if I showed my utility bill that I wouldn't get charged the extra, then he told me that I could switch to this location and not get charged extra, and then when I decided that I would switch my membership to this location since it's the only Massage Envy in San Francisco, he then said it was not possible to do that and asked who told me that!? He was the one who told me that! Having to deal with this issue every time​ I check out after a massage I decided it's just not worth it. When I called my Sunnyvale store to cancel the membership and told them about the extra charge at the San Francisco location they were shocked. Don't know what's going on here, but they just lost a customer. Instead,​ I found a great Thai Massage place that is high quality and great massage EVERY time. read more

Review for TJ: Been a member here for a while and seen some really great massage therapists come and go (Rose, Shane), so thought I'd leave a review for TJ whom I had a session with today. If you work out with any regularity, tend to unconsciously hold tension in specific places in your body, or just need a regular massage as part of your overall recovery then TJ's your guy. He clearly knows the human anatomy, knows what he's doing, and can tell exactly where your body's tense (even if you don't know it yet) and how to get it to release. I lost count of the number of times today he unwound knots I'd been holding onto without even knowing. He wouldn't be out of place in a sports medicine clinic or a chiropractor's office, to be honest. Also - since I see a review for him below that's less than favorable: if your idea of a massage is being softly stroked into relaxation, TJ's not your guy. If you understand that the best massages involve the "good" kind of pain and that the relaxation comes AFTER (when you sleep like a baby that night and recover better) then do yourself a favor and make an appointment pronto. As for the outlet itself - guys, it's a chain, clearly operating on a franchise model of some sort. It's not that I don't believe some of the complaints folks are leaving on here but where else in DOWNTOWN SF are you going to find a massage for $80 + tip? You guys do understand that even Macdonald's and Starbucks charge different prices in different states right?! read more
