I had a massage here and it was absolutely wonderful, but my experience with membership piece has been not pleasant so far. Immediately after my massage, I was placed in a room and got the whole spiel of everything. Sat there for 30 minutes. I said I liked having regular body work but did not want to sign up for a membership because I was going through a surgery soon and I wouldn't be able to use the membership for a while. They assured me that they would pause it the day after I signed up. Unfortunately, I was pressured and I agreed and they did not keep their word about the pause after I signed up. I would rate the experience as a 5 star since the massage therapist was outstanding except that my experience with the admin side of the business was terrible. To begin with I never received a call back from my 2 prior msgs, to see if I could use to book a massage using intro coupon of 1 hr. massage for $65. I finally got someone on my 3rd call. I explained to the lady that I am new to the Cranston area and would like to try them out. I also told her that I'd like to use the $65 for 1 hour coupon but it STATED THAT IT WAS ONLY GOOD for 30 DAYS OF ISSUANCE. However, I told her that since there was no date on the coupon I couldn't tell when I got the coupon. She gave me the impression that it was OK and proceeded to get my credit card info. She also told me to make sure I brought the coupon with me at the appt. I left the coupon with the front desk personnel prior to going in the massage room. However after the massage, the personnel at the front desk told me (after several minutes of pointed back and forth Q&A) that the offer would not be honored after all because: 1. The coupon had no issue date on the space provided 2. These coupons were mailed out in 2019 ()which astounded me since I have only been in Cranston since last year) 3. They don't know who I spoke with and made the appt. 4, The person to whom I spoke with "just said to bring the coupon". I was actually considering switching my membership from my current stretch membership and current Thai massage membership to a Massage Envy membership to combine the services I get now. However, after this incident I realize that this company uses "bait and switch" tactic and decided not to sign up. This was my second appointment with Erin. She is an amazing massage therapist; however, my experience with one of the ladies at the front desk was a bit uncomfortable. When you arrive for your appointment you have to go into a room off of the reception area and answer some questions. There is no door and people can hear what you are saying. I do not think this was intentional on the part of the person I met with, but she was talking really loudly and I didn't really want other people to know my business. My massage was GREAT. Afterwards the same loud talker brought me into that same room with no privacy and this time I was zenned out from the massage and she was so loud that I felt like she was yelling at me. She assumed I had a husband. Awkward. Then when it was time to pay, she was loudly asking me how much of a tip I wanted to leave. Like I said, I don't think there was any bad intention. It was probably just lack of self awareness, but she could definitely use some coaching on confidentiality and using a lower volume--esp after client's massages. I signed up for a membership because Erin's got mad skills, but I hope I don't have to go through all the other stuff next time. read more

In my humble opinion there's no need to Massage Envy, so perhaps this is a critique of the business model in general and less about this specific franchise. Be prepared for a front desk that is clearly trained in sales. Every possible objection you could have will be challenged and countered with savvy open ended questions that only have one question-answer: 'why wouldn't you join?' -I wasn't that impressed with my therapist [well, we have hundreds of others you can try] -I have a therapist that I like better elsewhere [but are they as conveniently located?] -I don't feel comfortable with an auto monthly plan [why are you not prioritizing your health?] -I was told there was a discount for upfront payment [who mentioned this?] -Angelica shared with me on the phone that I would get a free massage with pay in full... [Angelica no longer works here] It's not just the sales approach that's a post relaxation buzz kill, but the obviousness of the intake form (asks more about how they can sell to you then about your personal health). The piece de resistance is the suggested gratuity on the non-member rate which happens to be 1.5x the cost of an actual massage in RI. A one hour member rate is $60, and a one hour non-member is $95. Not sure why it makes sense to pay a membership fee to get normal priced massages and then be expected to tip 30%... Needless to say, I walked away more wound up then when I began but with the confidence that I held my ground and didn't buy into something that I didn't want. read more

My boyfriend bought me a three massage package for Christmas 2019 and due to the pandemic I wasn't able to use them right away. My first massage wasn't good, I requested the full body and the woman only focused on my shoulders then told me my time was up. I tried a second massage with someone else and it was a lot better but when I tried using my gift card , they charged my personal card instead and said I didn't have any money left on my gift card which should have been for 3 massages but I only got one. I've NEVER wrote a bad review but Ive been cancelled on 3 times in less than SIX MONTHS with less than 24 hour notice. When once my husband had to cancel for first time ever after years of membership with 23 hours notice and we still got charged. Details below: I bought into massage envy a few years ago with the selling point of members being able to make last minute massages with the last hour of the day being for members only. Since then it's impossible to get massages but that is the 'smallest' of my complaints... In the past 6 months I have had three massages cancelled on me... Three! All from the same massage therapist, Nicole. Now you may say why do you keep booking with her. Well they only have 2 prenatal therapists. The other one I've had (Susan who is great) but she is always booked up. The first time I was sad because I already paid for a babysitter. But they said they could fit me in for a 90 minute facial. Problem #2- I was in and out of the facial in 70 minutes! Don't put me in with someone if they don't want to be there. Ok great you only take 1 session instead of 1.5 but the problem is I was already cancelled on and your solution was someone who rushed through and didn't want to be there. Then a few months later I get a voicemail at night that my morning massage is cancelled. Second time now with less than 24 hour notice. Solution ? Free enhancement and no payment for two months. Great but still no massage (which is my ultimate goal of making an appointment.... Crazy I know ). A few weeks later I have a massage with Susan... Shes there and is great. But I'm so behind on massages because there is hardly any available appointments unless you book two months out and the ones I make keep getting cancelled. So I take the chance and book one more. Figures Susan is not available before my due date so I only have the option if Nicole... No way will I get cancelled on in less than 6 months. Jokes on me! She cancels for a third time? When? The SAME morning of my massage that is supposed to be at 1230. Are you kidding?! I ask to speak to a manager all he can say is sorry. I ask for corporates number but says they don't have it. First time ever even walking in to a massage place let alone getting one! I had the customized 60 min facial with Chelsea an let me tell you I feel so confident about my face after only one time. I'm very open about this so let explain to you, I have struggled for years with blackheads and buildup an everything above an she got rid of a a lot more then I thought she could! Facility was lacking from the traditional spa, no locker room, robes, tranquility room was not tranquil, pre-treatment interview is conducted at the sales counter, by the owner (not the therapist). Treatment rooms are COLD, they try to make up for it with the heated table - but its cold! The owner spent FAR too much time talking about himself pre-treatment - not enough time engaging us. Attempts to build rapport were invasive as he tried to connect on some odd regional business level. I had a phenomenal massage... but my wife had a less than average massage (didn't ask/didn't listen). My wife's experience could have been avoided by a pre-treatment interview with the therapist instead of the goofy owner. The worst part is the sales pitch at the end as they try to commit you to a full year (a la Gold's gym) of massages at the introductory rate or it goes back to "traditional rates" aka $100/60min if you don't want to join. They will not let you pay for the service until they work you through their vacuum cleaner door to door styled process complete with "limited time" and "what ifs". In the post massage glow - this was seriously off-putting. Definitely room for improvement read more

The purpose of a massage is to relax both the body and the mind. I left the table somewhat relaxed, although the pressure was not deep enough even after I requested it to be deeper. There seems to be a fear among therapists to perform a true deep tissue massage. If I wanted a body rub, I'd asked my girlfriend. Now, on to the post-massage experience. As others have noted in their review, the relaxation goes away as they attempt to pressure you into a contract. One individual mentioned that there is no obligation and that the client can simply say "no." True, but following a massage the last thing I want to experience is a high-pressure sales pitch. It actually made me frustrated as I repeatedly said no. Causing the benefits of the massage to quickly dissipate. In conclusion, I've had far better massages at similar rates. Do your homework and find an establishment run by professionals who build a rapport with their clients and customize the services to suit their needs. read more

I was having some pain from a pulled muscle in my shoulder so I googled massage services in my area. I found a special for first time customers at massage envy and made an appointment for the next day. I was greeted and asked to fill out a 2 page questionaire and treated to a nice cup of cucumber water. I spoke with one person and explained what I was looking for , then she took me to the meditation room to wait for my therapist. The meditation room was pretty awesome. It was dimly lit with comfortable seating and a waterfall type structure on one wall that provided soothing water sounds. I sat for less than 5 minutes and was greeted by my therapist. She discussed with me the process and confirmed what my expectations were. I had a 50 minute massage and let me tell you, I was very relaxed and pain free when I emerged from the massage table. I was then escorted to the front desk to check out. I was then presented with an offer to become a member. This membership is a commitment from me to have 1 massage per month at the discounted rate of 60$. A one hour massage runs 96$ for non members. I was not at all excpecting this high pressure sales pitch in my post massage state of mind. I did not want to even try to make any decisions at that point and left with some information on the program, however, since I was not willing to commit on the spot, I would need to pay a sign on fee of 96 $ if I decided to join later. Oh well, not for me, but I did enjoy my massage. if i were rating the massage alone, this would have been a much higher rating. read more

I'm not sure if they've gotten better service but I've been coming here since September of 2014 and the staff have all been very polite. Yes, they asked me to join their membership but we're never pushy. In fact, everyone I have dealt with has been extremely polite. I would also say the same about the therapists. Terrence and Paul both do amazing work, and if you want a deeper massage see Rochelle. I've been a member here for over 2 years and felt compelled to write a review to balance out all the negative ones. First, yes if you are not a member they are going to try to sell you a membership. That is the whole point of this business model so to be surprised or put off when it actually happens & to put a negative mark towards the business seems unfair given you should know this walking in. Second, I've never had an experience where my appointments have been cancelled without notice or otherwise unorganized staff. I don't think I've ever had an unauthorized debit applied to my card but I guess I'd have to verify. Third, massage therapists (not masseuse- lol, using that word seems so insulting) are hit or miss. This is no different than any other place around and even the higher end spas. Honestly, for the ones where I don't walk out feeling amazing I'm sure another one of their clients is very happy with their approach/style. Massage therapy is versatile and there are going to be different needs for different clients. You just do your best to describe your needs when booking and they will try to fit you with a good match based on your schedule. The more flexible you are the more likely you'll get a perfect match. I'm not even on contract anymore and I stay. It's a great deal and as a member it's amazingly convenient to call in and get in for an appointment that same night. A great example would be a few weeks ago when my husband and I decided over dinner we could use some relaxation. We both booked with 90 minute appointments starting at 8:30 that same night! Sometimes therapists come and go, that is the nature of the business, but I keep getting lured in by another amazing therapist. Some of these comments are just rude- like "They are a franchise so I would not expect much"? Huh? I've encountered lots of friendly good people working here (both front desk and therapists) and even though I don't write reviews anymore I wanted to write one for this place because they deserve more positive credit on this site. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. I went in wanting to get a massage and was pressured into signing up for a membership. I'm a graduate student and finances are tight, which is why I wanted to go here but now I wish I had gone somewhere else. I signed up for the membership and was then taken to the waiting area. Offered water but they never brought it. My massage was ok but I left there incredibly sore and sick. I walked in feeling perfectly healthy and the next morning woke up with the flu which turned into bronchitis and sinusitis and in pain. Now I know that when you are sick you are sore but my body hurt so bad it couldn't have just been from being sick. I'm writing this now because I've been trying to get out of my membership and the customer service I am receiving has been awful. She keeps telling me that she doesn't understand how a massage can give you bronchitis and doesn't understand how it's all related. I told her that I never saw I got sick from the actual massage but the fact still remains that I walked in perfectly healthy and walked out with a sore throat and went downhill from there. I have now been battling this bronchitis for a month. I'm so frustrated with them, I'm about to call my credit card company and have them not allow any charges from Massage Envy. Oh and the only way you can get out of your membership is with a doctors note saying you shouldn't get massages (what are these reasons) or if you live more than 25 miles away. Massage Heights will place a hold on your account for basically any reason and cancel it if you lose a job or something happens with your finances. I'm a bit surprised by some of the reviews, yet most seem to shed negative light on the sales aspect of things. As most have mentioned, there is NO obligation! You can simply say no thanks and walk away. However if you are curious then listen to their pitch. This is how it works folks. I was at first hesitant of joining because of the many reasons mentioned...cost, timing, and concern for a quality massage & therapist. I have experienced some less satisfying massages in the past however once you find the person/treatment that makes your experience worth it, why ponder the alternative? My wife & I actually see the same therapist because she makes our visit exceptional. I thank her often for referring me. Not only is she (therapist)sweet and kind, but also has "hands of heeling." I feel so relaxed after I leave that I purposely book later appointments so I can go straight home and sleep. I look forward to going each month and hope to be able to continue this. As far as some of the other quirks, the atmosphere is fine. People must understand this isn't an all day Spa with robes/slippers/hair stylist. For me personally, it meets the objective. The receptionist are always super friendly and ask me if I need anything. They also take care of future appointments and attend to other issues while I'm in the massage room. It's very time efficient! Few critiques: 1) It would be nice to have special offers for existing clients that allow upgrades on time or to experience new products & treatments. This keeps everyone happy and displays that customer retention is just as important as seeking new clients. 2) This can apply to both sides (new/existing) but I think it would enhance the experience if there were less emphasis on the sales side and instead highlight more of the benefits. If people are educated on the benefits of a massage they may be more willing to join. However if one comes off as a sales person just pushing a product, the experience can be less stimulating. My fiancée and I were in town visiting some family and decided to get massages. I am very surprised with the previous reviewers post, as we had an incredible experience. When we arrived we spoke with a very pleasant woman at the front counter and then were taken to the tranquility room, which had big comfortable couches and played relaxing music . Our therapists then came in to speak with us and were very attentive to our needs and very pleasant to talk to. The massage itself was outstanding, I have never had an hour go by so fast. During the massage the therapist consulted us as to the intensity of the massage, how the massage felt, and whether the table needed to be made warmer, but only once as to not inhibit the massage experience. As an athlete with several injuries, I do not remember the last time my body felt so good as when I left. On the way out the owner checked in with us to see how our experience went. My husband and I paid for a full year of massages for one hour each month. We have done that for a number of years and have really enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately we both had health issues not allowing us to use a good portion of what we had paid for. We were told not to worry that the money was in the system and we could use it at any time. We are both better and were at Massage Envy in Cranston yesterday, 12/15/2022. We were trying to schedule our appointments for next year and were told that the manager would not apply our funds already paid to next year. We were told we would have to utilize all of the unused hours in the first two months of 2023 plus pay an additional $20 per month to do that. Needless to say we refused that offer so we are out all of the money we paid to Massage Envy in Cranston, RI. Its too bad because the staff is really nice especially Betsy and our therapist, Amiel is excellent. It's the manager of the Massage Envy in Cranston, RI who is not business oriented. Not allowing long time good clients the opportunity to utilize their funds already paid is unfortunate and does not show very good business sense. Heaven on Earth. REALLY. When I started with them 3 years ago I just thought it would be a pleasant treat for me now and then...and it was. However, who knew I would undergo such a life changing experience!? I found out that I could join their Wellness Plan locking in a lower rate for my treatments (yes, they are so much more than massages!) AND have the treatments paid for by my Flex Spending Plan. Genius! Don't ask me how it works, but it does. Now it feels almost like I'm having a free massage each month. In all seriousness, I suffer from just getting older. I learned through the very experienced therapists that the symptoms of aging - stiffness, general achiness, etc. - were much improved with certain types of massages. It so improved my mobility that I feel 10 years younger. Since I have been a member so long, I've also had the good fortune of having them in my corner when I experienced two injuries. I went to both a physical therapist and Massage Envy and healed in record time. The two therapists (physical and massage) worked together to give me the maximum benefits. Amazing. Now, let me warn you that not all of these treatments are completely pleasurable. Some can be somewhat painful. But it falls in the category of no pain no gain. The day after everything moves better and feels as though I'm the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz having just had my joints oiled. Krissy, Michelle, Jobi, Big Jim are only a few of the many really fantastic crew. You won't go wrong with any of them. Let's not leave out the front desk crew either. Truly top shelf customer service. They remember your name and great you as you enter. Their hands-on approach to managing your entire experience is refreshing and makes you feel as though you are a special client. When they get to know your preferences, if there is an opening because of a cancellation, they call just to see if it is something you'd like to grab. Love that! I wish customer service was as pleasant in all the establishments I frequent. My doctor can't believe my improvement. If I go too long without getting in to see them, I feel like my whole body just begins to crumple in on itself. I don't want to ever have to do without Massage Envy in my life. As a busy executive, having that little bit of time carved out for myself every month where I can just close my eyes and concentrate on me is divine and spiritually healing as well. The location has an issue with the online appointment system and the personnel at the location said they have reported the issue. This issue was not reported to customers and as a result the appointment that i booked several weeks in advanced was rebooked over the phone by another person. When i showed up to the appointment the only thing that was said was that there is an issue with the online system and there was nothing else they could do. This was a birthday present booked three weeks in advance for my wife and because this site failed to take the online system down for repair and failed to notify customers that it was not working my wife did not receive her massage on the day off she took to celebrate her birthday. We planned our whole day around this massage, spent gas money, wasted our time driving to and from this location when this issue could have easily been resolved by notifying customers that the online system was not working. My father who was getting massages monthly at this location before covid will likely be taking his business else elsewhere. read more

Not bad if you'd like to get ONE massage at a discounted rate... But my "Three Month Membership" ended up being a 5-month membership and cost $120 more than I bargained for. And as you can imagine, that's not a nice thing to have happen to you in the month of December when you're saving money for holiday shopping. Beware of the tricky contractual language that they put in front of you before you sign off on it (usually they will present it after a massage while you're well... feeling a bit... sleepy). And by calling and kindly requesting that the charges be removed, seeing as I did not intend on having any more appointments, the situation went no where. I was told, "Sorry but I advise you come in before December 25 to avoid being charged again in January". What a joke. I thought this was a place where consumers could go to relax and forget about the everyday things, like money. There was no sympathy toward the buyer (not that I would normally expect there to be). Terrible customer service. As far as the massages go, I had three thus far... EVERY ONE OF THEM STARTED AT LEAST 10 MINUTES AFTER IT WAS SCHEDULED TO START. After a long conversation about the Massage Envy model, I conclude that this model is very deceptive. I get a gift from my husband for A MASSAGE (numero uno) THATS IT ALL HE ASKED FOR - he is sold a 'membership' which he didn't question and only went there because I told him it would be most convenience with my extremely busy schedule since its close by. HE WENT there FOR ONE MASSAGE FOR ONE of my VALENTINE GIFTS. When I call to inquire about why he was sold something he never asked for a 'membership' it went into a long question and answer session. Conclusion , when a customer goes in for their first session with a gift card (membership card) you are asked for a credit card. This credit card is kept on file so after your membership expires they go into your CC account and pull membership fees UNTIL AND IF AND WHEN a customer even notices. I WILL NOT BE GIVING MY CREDIT CARD on my first appointment that my husband already paid for in the "membership". He never asked for a membership. They did not sell him what he asked for (ONE MASSAGE). If you choose not to give your credit card on your first visit, your paid membership is reduced from three (3)- 60 minute sessions (that my husband already paid for as a gift) to two (2)- 60 minute sessions. HMMM very deceptive - my educated intelligent brain tells me the model is set up to catch as many people as possible by charging fees after the expiration of the "membership" that my husband never asked for. How many super busy folk will get tied up in this "automatic" charge after "membership expiration"? I say more people than not! Is this how massage envy stays in business by ripping off the public.? They should, by this deceptive model, become the most "envied" (no pun intended) business to book a massage. BTW the girl Cheryl I spoke with was very pleasant, very very patient with me and after I asked 100 questions so I could fully understand exactly what is and isn't, she still was patient and pleasant. When busy professionals pay and take valuable time out of their busy schedules for spa services, it's because they need and are paying for relaxation and therapy. THEY DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A DECEPTIVE BUSINESS MODEL POTENTIALLY CHARGING A CREDIT CARD they really only authorized without reading the 'fine print'. I came to Massage Envy today in hopes of revitalizing my skin and feeling relaxed . Instead , I received a rushed facial and a half hearted hand/arm rub. The women had on gloves and kept pulling them up every couple of minutes and was rubbing my face extremely hard through out the facial . At one point I was left just laying on the table while it sounded as though she was texting abruptly on her phone . The table was not very warm and the room was cold . She quickly gave me a hand/arm rub then was making a lot of noise getting products ready to use. At the end of the facial she quickly applied alot of moisturizer on my skin and abruptly got up, threw her gloves away and asked if I wanted water. I left feeling sticky and uncomfortable. I have had many facials in the past elsewhere and had always felt relaxed and cared for throughout the process. Usually, the therapist would stand outside the door with water for me after and would allow me time to get ready to leave etc. I was given a gift card and that is why I tried Massage Envy but found it to be one big sales pitch and very unprofessional. After being a loyal customer of 11 years, I would have to say I was treated very poor last week. After a mistake that they did, I never felt so disgusted in my life. I left the place crying because they could not service me and told me that a manager will call me back. Mind you I did get a massage last month, yes they always want your money.. no one has called me back yet. I don't even want to hear that they are closed because of COVID 19, because I sure did a phone call to cancel my daughter appointment next week, but a manger can not call me back. The woman who massaged me was really friendly and worked on every area I needed work on. It was the girl at the front desk that spoiled my entire experience. I understand that they get commission for every person who signs up for their bogus membership, but I don't need a massage that often. After I explained that I didn't want a membership, the girl just straight up asked me "why" like I was an idiot for not doing so... I felt like crying.. I felt cornered and had to make up some excuse on the spot instead of telling her the only reason why I was able to go was because I had a gift card. My husband lost his job and we just had to move in with my father. I think the hardest part was that our 2 year kept asking to go home. So I figured a massage would be great! But I will never go back there and I will never recommend to any of my friends, I will do quite the opposite actually. read more

This place is far from relaxing!! My husband purchased me a 3 month membership. When i walked in i was told i had to place a credit card on file but it wouldnt be charged unless i dnt show to an appointment. I signed a paper stating that my card is not to be charged. So i book a massage (that was apart of my membership i already paid for) i was charged 65$ the next day, i call n complain they refund my money. I book another monthly massage for my bday i was told i get a free enhancment for my birthday. The next day im charged 10$, i had to call again to get a refund. I bet you they do this all the time hoping people dont notice. That is robbery. Charging my card on top of the annoying sales people at the front desk. This place is a JOKE! I must say I LOVE THIS PLACE!! My mom started going here and I followed. I now live in New Bedford and drive 40 mins just to get a massage here. From the moment you walk in the door everyone is always so nice. The place is always clean and they always have the heating pad on, on my table. I will never stop going here!! My husband gave me a membership to Massage Envy several years ago for a gift. It is the gift that keeps on giving. I renew it every year and look forward to my fabulous massages with Janet every month. It is the most therapeutic thing that I do for myself. Janet is professional and attentive and is the most wonderful massage therapist that I have ever had. I also have facials several times a year with Kim and my skin has never looked better. The front desk staff: Meghan, Betsy and Cheryl, just to name a few, are equally as wonderful and accommodating. I give Massage Envy five stars and over all of the years that I have been a member, there is not one negative comment to say about them. My wife bought me a gift card for three massages. At the end of the first massage they wanted my credit card and my license?? I responded that I had a gift card. They wanted me to sign a contract and bill me monthly?? For what? I have a gift card no need. The pressure continued until any benefit of the massage was gone. read more
