Groupon was having a sale and I wanted a massage. Massage Du Jour had a great price on a 60 minute deep tissue massage. I purchased and was able to schedule my appointment online for the following week. Google Maps wasn't super helpful finding the location at Jax Beach. I figured out where the building was (behind Pita Pit) and had read a review on Groupon prior to purchasing that indicated there was parking in the back. I followed the signs through the gate and up the stairs. I walked in and noticed a restroom to the right with a sink in the hallway and a couch and a chair in the waiting room. I completed one form for medical history and another confirming I didn't have covid symptoms. Jason said he was ready, so I entered the massage room. I explained to him my problem areas, he left the room and I got ready for an hour of relaxation and pain relief. I have been getting massages for many years and have experienced several masseuses. Jason was by far the best masseuse EVER! He attacked my shoulders and neck like a champ. There were a few times it hurt a little, but I didn't tell him to stop because I knew in the end it would relieve my tight muscles. Once he finished my problem area he then started on my legs, feet, arms and hands. Every masseuse I have seen in the past barely gave any attention to these areas. But not Jason! I received a deep tissue massage on my full body and it was wonderful. Think about our hands and feet. They are the most used body part that should receive the same amount of massage intensity as our problem areas. Granted the most time was spent on the problem area but I didn't notice the difference today. Jason provided the pricing for future visits. $70 for a 60-minute massage, $100 for a 90-minute massage OR if you buy three at one time you save $5 per massage. Underwhelmed. John had bought a groupon voucher for a 90 minute massage with Massage Du Jour- out at the beach. It was a gift before the pandemic hit and I finally went in because the deal was going to expire soon. Google maps delivered me to a large house set just a bit off A1A- behind the Pita Pit. The front parking had signs that they were for another business in the building, so I pulled into the driveway and around back to find a few additional parking spots and could see the signs for the Massage Du Jour. I entered through a gate and went upstairs to the second floor- aka, this place is not good if you are handicap or suffering from an injury. Once I was on the second floor I was met with the least welcoming door. It reminded me of the janitor closet door at any public school. I hesitantly entered and saw a small waiting room and a table directly in front of the door with clipboards and paperwork to fill out. I took a clipboard and a lady standing outside one of the massage rooms (dressed in athletic leggings and a t-shirt) informed me there were 2 pages to fill out. Does she work here? Is she just a nice customer? I took a seat in the small room and realized that the waiting room, like the front door was not inviting. Nothing to make you feel like you are about to be pampered- no decorations that sparked that association with massage or spa services. At least, not for me. A young man stepped out of another massage room and asked if I was ready and I hurried through the rest of my paperwork. The lady- was a massage therapist- both of the therapists I saw were dressed extremely casual. I entered the plain room with the massage table, a small table with a light, and the sound of waves crashing emanating from the speaker & a mirror on one wall. Again- no décor'. I tried to focus on the sounds. I went over my history and areas I wanted focused on- I carry a lot of stress in my shoulders. I also had a massage a couple weeks ago and suffered some sciatic pain for the week afterwards. At first the pressure from the therapist felt good- but he was hardly moving- holding deep pressure on areas around my shoulder blade- digging in deeply, but moving very slow. After over 30 minutes of him focusing on only the right shoulder I was exhausted. I could feel my collarbone tightening. Finally he moved on and started on my legs- this is when I almost fell asleep. When I flipped onto my back he was reaching under my back and using his fingertips to apply more pressure to the shoulder blades and it was 50/50 good to bad. At no point was it unbearable- but after I had left, my muscles started tightening. Painfully so- I had an event to attend with an open bar and declined drinking so I wouldn't compound the muscular/tissue pain with dehydration. This morning I wonder if my back will be bruised? Just the right shoulder is ablaze in pain- where the massage therapist focused the most energy. I hate writing poor reviews and kept going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars- but the pain in my shoulder and back is lowering that rating. Excellent massage therapist and incredible value! Best massage therapist in Jacksonville I have found (for deep tissue) at an incredibly affordable value. I love massage therapy for ongoing healing and regular self-care more than a day out at a spa... So keep that in mind with this review. It's about the results of the massage. If you need a good physically rehabilitative deep tissue massage, book with Jason because he's excellent, and I've traveled around the world with various experiences in regular massage therapy. Jason's therapeutic massage skills at Massage Du Jour are top notch and I have been going 1 to 2 times a month for a year since I found him in 2020. That said, Wow! my review and experience couldn't be more different than the other review listed here on yelp. I love & respect my fellow elite member Crystal for her detailed first review of Massage Du Jour and yet my experience of this place is from a totally different perspective and worth writing about why I have such different rating on my criteria. Here's my story... About a year ago, I was new to Jax area and have been struggling with low back pain exacerbated by too much sitting doing video calls during the pandemic. Back in southern California I had a great massage therapist who helped me maintain mobility by working on my back on a regular basis. I took my partner Brian for his birthday to One spa In Jax Beach which is super bougie and beautiful. One spa is a perfect location for birthday parties, girls spa days, etc. And their massage therapists are also great there. But their prices are around $250-$500 per treatment or more. My point is, when you have an ongoing physical issue, those prices may be very difficult to keep up a twice a month schedule. Searching through Groupon, I found Massage Du Jour had a coupon for first-time customers which was an incredibly reasonable price - $40/60 min or $65-$70 for 90 min plus tip. Wow!!! and even after the first time visit if you were satisfied with their services, they will sell you a package discount for three massages at $75 each (2021) or $85 each ($2022). This is much more affordable than $500 a pop with, in my opinion, as skilled a massage therapist... Jason is my guy. So yes, I booked with Jason. Definitely Crystal is right about how the first time you arrive, it can be confusing about where to park, but there is plenty of street parking even if their small lot in the back is full... And yes, Crystal was right about the difficulty in how to find the suite your first time. Crystal's photos will help you look for signs and navigate through the gate and up the stairs. And yes the stairwell is like any open air stairwell... Not bougie and pretty stripped down. And yes the little waiting area is very simple and no nonsense once you get inside. But people-- $40???? For a first time massage??? Anyway, my criteria is based on professionalism of my massage therapist, my comfort with my massage therapist, the very reasonable cost of these massages, and the incredible results of reparative deep tissue massage with Jason. I don't know about the other massage therapist in the practice but I do know one of the partners name is Carlos. I can tell you that if you have the goal of using massage to help with physical issues, Jason is very talented. And, I absolutely cannot beat the value and price anywhere. For the physical results for my back and knees and shoulders, comfort with my massage therapist, and cost of being able to afford regular treatments, I will skip all the other bougie add-ons.
