Mascara is one of my fave restaurants along Western Road, although I hope Mascara means something more appetising in Africa.

Will be top of my list of local recommendations, take aways and home catering (have added their number to my mobile, was so fantastic). The depth of flavour of their lovingly-prepared jerk chicken, goat curry and fish curry (unlike you have ever tasted before - seriously moreish!) will seriously surprise newcomers. The sypmphony of flavours of the fish with chilli and scotch bonnet pepper sauce was SoooOOooo unique, asked to buy a batch of the sauce to take home!!! They really ought to bottle that sauce! 5 stars as a new local restaurant with the courage to try a new concept. Keep up the outstanding efforts!!! It was highly recommended to us through word of mouth. Absolutely worth a meal here!!!! It will be unlike anything you have experienced for quite some time. African passion on a plate.

You must try their jollof rice and jerk chicken! What really surprised us was the value for money. Because they accept 'Taste Card' (50% off) the 'Bill Shock' you normally get when a restaurant slaps the bill on the table was more like, 'I can't in good conscience pay that little!' Highly recommend .. A must before you leave Hastings!

Moorish's name of course is a clever play on the North African Islamic food which heavily inspires its menu, as well as the suggestion that one is likely to want more and more due to its general greatness. I would not question then, the thought processes which made its independent owner and chef to name it as such. However completely in my own opinion, and possibly due to the general salt, fat and sugar intake of my average meal which I may have unknowingly become addicted to, I found my own meal to have been actually only quite moorish. But to name a restaurant 'Quite Moorish' would be a huge PR gamble and likely a huge failure, and one simply I don't blame the friendly owner and ever present owner to have taken. I had a Tunisian sausage stew with cous-cous, which I ate across the road at the Rat and Trumpet*. The dish was tasty and warming and obviously incredibly beneficial to my body compared to most delicatessen, but I also found that the meat content was pretty thin, and that the sauce also was a little too watery for my own tastes. But again, the reader should be aware I'm probably a bit of a salt munching phillistine to appreciate the subtlety of the food here. So if you like a healthy mix of stews and soups inspired by the middle east and an ever changing menu freshly prepared I would recommend trying this place. If your on the run you can even take away a Chinese style takeaway box with you full of taginey goodness.

There's a lot on Moor-inspired dishes here and the owner specialises in preparing cuisine for those with allergies, avoiding the use of too much wheat, and ensuring that some items are nut-free, dairy-free and gluten-free. The last time I was there I tried a Tagine with lamb that was full of flavour and unlike unlucky Jack, had lashings of meat.

We were looking for somewhere…read morefor an inexpensive bite to eat with a friend, and outside Sahara was an 'A' board advertising as its headline 'Set Lunch £6.95, Dinner £8.95'. In the adjacent window the set menu selection looked very good, with plenty of lamb, chicken and vegetarian options. This hit the spot so we went in. We were given menus, but found no sign of the set menu at £8.95. We asked about it, and were treated to a rather loud and slightly embarrassing exchange between the waitress and kitchen of 'are we doing a set menu tonight?' which went on for a few minutes. The waitress then said they weren't - the offer was only on weekdays, which did not include Fridays. We pointed out they were advertising it outside (with no caveats about which nights it applied to). Then another member of staff appeared, and suggested the weekend set menu - which, at £38 for two, was more than double the price. I pointed out that they were advertising something different outside - after all, it's not a great effort to take in an 'A' board. He just repeated that the offer was on Mondays to Thursdays only. We felt ripped off - we'd been lured in on a false premise. We left with a bad taste in our mouths - so can't actually comment on the food...

I noticed India mentioning that Sahara can be a little bit pricey, but this can be avoided if you come between Monday and Thursday. During these days/nights, you can get 2 courses from as little as £6.95 (£8.95 in the evening). If like me, you are big on trying to take advantage of these promotions, Sahara is definitely a restaurant that should be added to your list of potential choices. I had a mixed meat dish served with couscous and salad, I can say with all certainty that I was not disappointed. Sahara is good alternative to the more Western restaurants, I could certainly see myself heading back.
