The hype is real folks. This is one of if not the best Thai in the Birmingham local area. It's a hole in the wall type place, don't let that fool you because you are going to go on a culinary journey that your tastebuds will be demanding you repeat. My finance loves coconut soup, and she rated this one quite highly. We ordered chicken pad Thai, garlic lamb, pot stickers and rice to share. Let's start with the lamb, very well cooked, great sauce, fantastic flavour and will be ordering this next time. The pad Thai was sensational, what a bountiful blend of flavour. Everything on the menu is made to order and taste so fresh and good. The grilled spicy steak salad is my favorite. Not that hot but I do ask to tame the heat. The cashew nut and scallion chicken dish is another favorite. The soups are great and they have yummy crab angels! I feel like everything is reasonably priced and you are served nice size portions. I like the fact this place stays open after the lunch rush. Usually my favorite Thai places are closing right at 2:00 or 3:00 & sometimes I can't make it. Ugh. If Im craving Thai...This is now my new back up plan. Love the location. It's located in the Vestavia shopping plaza with Publix. Small space but super friendly staff. I've only tried the pineapple fried rice & pad see ew. Sadly the pineapple rice was just ok. I was a bit disappointed. Nothing that just blew me away. Rice, scallions, pineapple, chicken. Now the pad see ew was super tasty. Definitely authentic Thai flavors & I enjoyed EVERY bite. This is the place to venture out & try uncommon Thai dishes. I only found out about this the second time I ate here but ask for the food to be 'extra spicy' otherwise it ends up being a watered down version of the flavors. I ordered the green curry + beef salad. Even with extra spicy, the green curry uses the spices typically found in red curry but the beef salad is authentic. I would go back for the beef salad alone. Masaman Thai Kitchen is very good and affordable. However I'm not keen on the Americanized style of curries. The masaman curry was too sweet for my tastes. My favorite Thai in town is still Alloy Thai and Blue Pacific. read more

I'm obsessed with this place. My previous Thai food stop no longer suits me, so I was really happy when I spotted this after a Publix trip. Jasper bought the Thai Noodle dish with tofu and I ordered Panang Curry with tofu. The taste is authentic: spicy, bold, and piping hot! The curry dish came with rice, and we shared a little bit of everything. The cashier gave me some chili paste to spice things up a bit. The food is served to you in a take-away box, so that you can easily take home when done. Yes, it's a little more casual and it seems that take-out customers are the highest yield--I think about 10 or more people stopped in to pick up dinner in just 30 minutes. The place is set up to be a quick eat-in or take out stop, so the seating inside would really only comfortably fit about 12 people max. There is no alcohol, but there's water, soda, and sweet tea. All in all, our bill came to about $22 and we had plenty left over for the next day. I really love this place. I can honestly see myself being a regular at this place because it is affordable, filling (with enough for leftovers!), and the food is truly delicious. I'm giving 5 stars because I really, really love this place, and the fact that it's more of a takeout place is fine with me! read more

I love this small but very charming restaurant! The owners are always very sweet. You get delicious and authentic dishes, with big portions, for less than the price of other Thai restaurants in the Birmingham area. They have vegetarian options for those who don't eat meat! I had the pad kee mao tofu (Thai spicy), which was spicy but nothing too extreme. Their normal spicy wasn't spicy enough ;). Their tempura green beans were crunchy, fresh, and lightly bartered. This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Birmingham for a lot of reasons. Food - most importantly the food is very tasty. My favorite thing on the menu that I've tried is the Panang curry. They are very accommodating to adjusting the spice level if you would like it more or less spicy. The coconut soup is also good and differs from other Thai restaurants in town. I've also enjoyed eating the chicken noodle bowl and masaman curry. Cost - Dinner prices are on par with other Thai restaurants in town, but it is generally more than I would like to pay for a meal. However, this restaurant has great lunch specials everyday until 3pm. You can get your choice of one of several entrees, soup, and rice for ~$7.99. Owners - this restaurant is very small and really functions as more of a take out place, but my favorite thing to do is eat at the restaurant and talk to the friendly owners. They appear to be a husband-wife pair and are always very kind. The husband even was gracious enough to offer up some tips on which fish sauce to use when cooking my own Thai food at home. While this is not the only Thai restaurant I would recommend frequenting in Birmingham, it is delicious, has great lunch deals, and has very nice owners. Highly recommend! read more

This is my favorite place for Thai takeout in Birmingham. I've tried them all. Everything I've tried at Masaman has been delicious. My favorites are panang curry, the curry noodle bowl and pad kee mao. I get mine with tofu or vegetables. My husband always gets pad thai or masaman curry. This is one of my favorite Thai places in Birmingham! Well worth the trek on 31/280 (i.e.it's worth it). Food: Noodles: The Pad Kee Mow (Thai Spicy Noodle) and Pad Siew are both delicious. I love the extra spicy kick of the Pad Kee Mow, so I would recommend going with that one if you enjoy spicy food. Curry: If you like a slightly sweet curry, I highly recommend the Masaman Curry. Portions are very generous for all dishes, certainly enough for leftovers. I tried some of my friend's Green Curry and it was delicious also. If you like spicy food, I recommend getting the Green Curry and asking for extra spice. The woman who runs the restaurant told me that you can also order the Masaman Curry with extra spice, which I will probably do next time. Atmosphere: I believe Masaman started as take-out only. They have since added chairs and tables, but it can get a little crowded, especially around dinner-time. There isn't a whole lot of seating--but I haven't really found this to be an issue. Service: The service here is phenomenal. The woman who runs the place is extremely friendly (I think she actually runs it with her husband, though I have only interacted with the former)! I really like this place! After weeks of hearing everybody talk about it, I finally got to check it out. One of my fav Thai dishes to order is Masaman chicken... and what better place to try Masaman chicken than a place called Masaman!?!?! The meal didn't disappoint at all and was a healthy (large) portion, especially for a lunch menu price. The order came with a good amount of steamed rice as well as even a nice sized cup of coconut soup! It was packaged VERY well to accommodate the to-go fashion in which I ordered it. Everything was delish! Not sure if it's my fav Masaman dish but if it's not, it's number 2 for sure! The soup wasn't my fav, but that doesn't mean it was bad. The restaurant itself was smaller than what I envisioned but again... not a bad thing at all here. It's not a place that you'd dress up to attend, more of a casual deli feel (as compared to somewhere like Surin or Taste of Thailand). I had spicy beef noodle with tofu. I only eat soicy beef noodles whenever I eat Thai but their SBN tasted different - was dry with no taste. I was disappointed with my food but my friend's Pad thai was amazing. The best pad thai I had. And their service is very good the lady at the front is almost too nice. This place, though... After seeing raving reviews my boyfriend and I had to try it out. We went on a Friday night and they were just totally swamped. We got there just before a rush and got a table, but there are literally 6 2-seater tables in the entire place, so maybe takeout is the best option. For starters we got the coconut soup, which is always a delicious start to any Thai meal. The only thing I would change would maybe be to add some sort of thickening agent to it so that it wouldn't be so thin. Flavor was amazing, though, with a little bit of spice. For entrees, my boyfriend got the cashew and scallion beef, Thai hot. Thai hot is not for the faint of heart, but the heat was perfect for him. Made his nose effectively run for the duration of the meal. I got the chicken masaman curry, and it was absolutely amazing! Great flavor, great texture, large portion. Each entree comes with a huge side of steamed rice, so needless to say I came home with leftovers! I will definitely be back, probably to get takeout, though. We went here for lunch. I got Panang Curry and friend got Mixed Vegetables with tofu. The food was good quality and place was very clean. The taste of the food, however was disappointing. It's unusual that he and I agree on the taste of our food but we both thought our sauces were watered-down to being almost tasteless. The coconut soup, strangely, had the same issue, very little taste and was not very good. The service and people, though, were extremely nice. This is truly a hidden gem. I have been here several times and I crave it every week now. It's definitely a take out place, but there are tables and chairs and TV's on the wall. SO GOOD! their yellow curry is phenomenal, a slight nose-runny spice that builds as you eat but you can definitely taste the sweetness of the coconut milk. don't be afraid to order without chicken! veggies were cooked perfectly. my boyfriend got the chicken pad prik pod and he said it was equally delicious. oh, and their coconut soup is addictive. some of the best I've ever had. the lady on the phone (one of the owners) was a doll and double checked with me to make sure she had everything perfect, which I really appreciated. my only suggestion would be to maybe wrap the to-go boxes in cling wrap as some of my curry sauce spilled out of the sides of the box on the ride home. she did give us a fair warning to be careful of that as we picked up our food, though, and everything else was so awesome i wouldn't dream of docking a star for that. My husband ordered chicken pad Thai and didn't realize it would come with shrimp also, which he is allergic to, so we ended up just trading plates to avoid him being sick or us having to complain.
