Came here as a result of the high Yelp reviews but was disappointed. I love Indian food and have not found an Indian restaurant in Portland that is amazing, so was hoping that this would be the place. The owners were incredibly friendly and the prices are reasonable. Tried the chicken curry and the salmon vindaloo but felt that we could have made both dishes at home - they really just weren't very tasty. Also, neither dish had much sauce so there wasn't much excitement going on. The naan bread was different, I would say either very greasy or buttery. Wish I'd had a better experience. The old adage, don't judge a book by it's cover definitely applies here. I will be the first to admit that when we came up to this place, we were very skeptical. From the outside it looks like an old Mini Market. There are a few tables and not many items on the menu. But, that didn't stop us and we went in anyways and we were so glad we did. So the first thing to keep in mind about this place is that it's actually South Indian food. So the items that you might be expecting may not be on their menu. But don't let that stop you. We ordered the Chicken Masala, Shrimp Vindaloo, Samosa, and Naan and it was all phenomenal. Everything is home made from scratch made to order in house. I've been to India before and this brought back strong memories from there of the home cooking from the families we stayed with. The Naan was some of the best I've ever had. The portions are more than adequate, we couldn't finish the small. And they have a pretty decent beer selection on the side wall you can choose from as well as a small tap list. (If you want the real India experience, I recommend Kingfisher. It's everywhere in India) The other thing I wanted to point out about it is the hospitality. Going beyond the food, I think this is probably a husband and wife team who run this place. The lady behind the counter was extremely knowledgable and advised us on the best ways to experience the meal and she was spot on. Plus she was very friendly. The man running the kitchen came out and personally asked us to make sure the food was ok. That's the kind of hospitality I feel like you don't see much anymore and made us feel very welcome there. Everything is very clean and I would highly recommend dining in to get things as fresh as possible. You should definitely give this place a visit. read more

This place is amazing! I'm so glad we stopped by, super nice people and the food is second to none! Made fresh to order so it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for your food but it's well worth the wait. I think there is some rating manipulation going on here. Very over priced, considering a dish is more than 70% rice and ranges from 16-20 dollars. Not sure how this fell in the one $ range. Food was average, bland, over salted, and watery. Also, did not taste fresh. Naan has been fried and the rest reheated. Love Love Love this little Mom and Pop shop!!!! The owners work 7 days a week to keep this place running! The owners are super friendly. We had a long conversation while waiting for the food she made me feel like I was meeting a friend for lunch instead of picking up a Togo order. I ordered a spicy Chicken Masala which a fellow Elite said is a must have, and she was right! The spice was just right I asked for Spicy and it just had the perfect hint of heat without drowning out the flavors. The nan was so warm and light I couldn't stop eating it and I had to tell the S/O I had forgotten it since it never made it home... oops Yeah it was that good! The Masala spices and chicken merry well together and the rice and potatoes complimented the dish perfectly. Amazing little lunch spot hidden in downtown Gladstone if you blink you'll miss it so if you get to McLoughlin turn around you went to far. Also this location is mere feet from to great Gladstone parks so this place is in a great location to get your food Togo and dine out in front of the Clackamas river on one of the many park picnic tables and enjoy the view. It's completely worth the wait! Everything is homemade from scratch and authentic. The naan is so good, you won't be able to go back to the stuff you get from the store. Had a conversation with the owner about spice/heat rating. He knew so much about peppers, heat, and the scientific measurement of heat that I went home and Google searched a bunch of stuff. Woo! A rare 5 stars, both for food and for hospitality! My sister and I stumbled upon this hole in the wall (possibly converted convenience store) restaurant while we were staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Gladstone, OR. We ordered a small order of the chicken masala to go since neither of us were hungry but decided to eat it there. The owner immediately brought out cups of for water, plates, paper towels, and silverware and asked us if we needed anything else. The portion was huge and both my sister and I were pretty satisfied afterwards. The chicken was tender, spicy, and very delicious! I just moved in the neighborhood. I decided to drive though downtown Gladstone to check out some of the quaint shops. I came across this gem. I'm vegan, so finding vegan options can be a challenge. Knowing that most Indians are vegetarians and many have vegan options are went into look at through the menu. The owner was very welcoming. He pointed out the 3 vegan options (all of which looked delicious) bring that I had just eaten, I just got a vegan simosa. I was amazing. Wow, what a treat. The owners (husband & wife) were incredibly friendly as they served our meal, telling stories & sharing their experiences with our family. All food is freshly made so it takes a few minutes, with all fresh ingredients. We had the samosas and two entrées, all of the food was VERY good. The dining space is very limited, two tables in what is basically a little mini mart. Will definitely be back, possibly take out next time, though we would be disappointed to miss out on the conversation. Masala Box is an outstanding culinary find ,in a completely unlikely setting. The food is plentiful, delicious and fresh. Vijay makes the naan and the samosas fresh every day, and they are fantastic. The chicken masala curry was some of the best Indian food I have ever tasted. Obviously the setting is downscale, but that makes the food that much better. Vijay and his wife are engaging conversationalists, and are part of the draw. This is a place where you want them to do well but you don't' want to tell your friends because it will get overrun. :) read more
