Great Food, great service, great prices, and nice ambience. We were told the wait was about 30 minutes and got in after about half of that. We sat outside on a somewhat chilly day and it was perfect. Our waitress was quick to bring us water and get our drink order leaving us to look at the menu. The menu is great and has a good variety for when your craving some sushi or Asian delights. How have I not reviewed Masa yet? The move to the larger location has been good to this place. The added parking is a major plus. All the rolls you love and remember are still on the menu and dare I say they have added a few? The lunchtime bento boxes are still delicious and generously portioned. Service tends to be quick and attentive. I might wish for a more consistent hot and sour soup. The consistency and flavor varies from visit to visit. I also wish the restaurant did not take a break between lunch and dinner. There are times when a late-ish sushi lunch is just the thing. However, there is no one in the kitchen after 2 pm - come back around 5 pm. I fully admit that I sometimes eat here 3 times in a week. When I am not at Masa, I might be at their sister restaurant across town. read more

I love this place. I like the lunch specials and the fact that they have a lot of vegetarian sushi options. I'm allergic to fish but still like the idea of sushi so this place is really great for me! If you get the edamame you have to get the black bean sauce! It's delicious and worth the extra $2. The lunch specials are much cheaper than the dinner option. I like the patio. This a great restaurant if you're in the Tallahassee area and want Asian style food. They have very good quality options and their meat isn't full of cheep breading. UNI in TLH Score: 9.5/10. I have never (i.e., NYC, Chicago, DC, Seattle, LA) had a more creatively presented Uni Nigiri than here. Check out the picture. Brilliant (and quite fresh). I now vacillate between "best sushi/nigiri in town" places given my most recent visit to Masa's new Lake Ella environs. It's not that the new digs transformed this player into something greater than its previous self but rather that I likely did not pay proper respect to Masa's depth of nigirizushi acumen. First off - not only was Uni available, it was of the freshest color and consistency I've yet to have in TLH. I won't say "better" than Kiku's, but certainly every bit as good. Toro was firm and the rice was expertly formed underneath. Conch was perfectly prepared. The rest of the family all enjoyed their plates (Pad Thai for the wife, stir-fried for the kiddos) but I knew who was experiencing the best deal at the table! Masa's new location (directly across from Lake Ella in the old Tallahassee Motor Lodge parking lot) is leagues more well appointed than the warehouse it shared with Cafe Divorcee. I was in Tallahassee for my nieces graduation and we forgot one important thing.... to make dinner reservations for a large party of ten for after the graduation!! As you can imagine every decent restaurant was full. I was frantically checking Yelp for a place to eat and I called Masa to see if they had room for a large party ... and luckily they had one big table left!! Sweet .. my yelp app saves the day once again ;) When we arrived we were very happy to see it was not only a nice restaurant, clean, modern but the customer service was great from the moment I made the call. They seated us immediately and had water on the table and were taking our drink orders as soon as everyone was seated. It is a Asian Fusion type place, sushi, tempura, Pad Thai pretty much a little something for everyone. We definitely had a mixed group of young and old so everyone's palate was a little different but Masa had enough choices for the whole group. So everything we ordered was awesome! We tried a little bit of everything. I had the Philly roll (basically a JB roll - Salmon, cream cheese I/O masago) and a spicy tuna hand roll. The Philly roll was good but I have to say the spicy tuna hand roll was off the charts delicious! I also tried a little of everything off of my families plates lol (see pics)! We ordered the sesame chicken - very good, the salmon salad - good but small portion of salmon, the tofu vegetable noodle - really delicious and tons of tofu, chicken teriyaki - really good and nice portion size, the chicken shiitake mushroom - came in a white sauce with veggies - it was good not great and the dragon roll - very good. Overall our experience was great. The waitress was fast and friendly with such a large group of people and the management kept coming by to make sure everything was fine. The sushi here was great, we came as a party of 4, two couples. We started with the sake flight, it was ok, $10.00 for 4 basic sakes and not a bad way to start the evening. Next we moved onto appetizers, a bottle of sake and our sushi main courses, the food, and sake were great, the price wasn't even bad, we enjoyed and were very satisfied with our orders and the quality. Now why did I give this 2 stars,,,, the service was SLOW, our waiter was very in knowledgeable about anything, the sake the food he was pretty much a walking note pad to take your order, second we were harassed by a homeless guy IN THE RESTAURANT who smelled awful, he walked in the front door past the hostess and to our table and another persons begging for money or our food WHILE WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF DINNER!!! EDIT: I bumped my review up to 3 stars from 2, because of the swift and courteous response from the business on my issues. I will give Masa another shot in the future and make a new review! The food here is extremely overpriced for what you get. I ordered a cucumber wrapped sushi roll, and when it arrived they were about 3 times the size of a normal roll and impossibly to eat without cutting them up. Maybe there was a new sushi chef that night, but I've never had an issue at other restaurants with a cucumber wrapped roll. The wait staff was super fast and friendly once we got our order placed (we were sat for about 25 minutes before anyone took our drink order.) I'm hoping this was just a one night issue, but there are many more sushi restaurants in town that I will go to before Masa. read more

I'm not a sushi fan, but when my friends want good, local Asian food and just the right ambience, we go to Masa. My most recent visit on a Saturday night didn't upset. In fact, every expectation was met. With a party of 6, I was surprised that we were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and focused on serving us quickly. The appetizers were out fast and tasted delicious...the cream cheese wontons are my favorite. Masa has a wide appetizer menu, something for everyone. Portions of our entrees were huge, half of us taking home leftovers. We were all very pleased and feel like the cost is certainly justified and good for all that we ordered. I ordered pineapple chicken, and it was horrible! The chicken chunks tasted just like large boneless buffalo wings! I paid $16.00 for the most horrible meal I ever had in my entire life. The food I received was nothing compared to the same dish on the menu. Also very few pineapples and bell peppers. If the chef can't cook it right don't put it on the menu. First time I went to eat here with my son and last. I took the whole meal home, chicken very dry and even my dog who loves chicken would not eat it. Told 10, waited 20, 10 minutes to get drinks, new server, food came out at different times, seaweed was soggy and had obviously been sitting there. Masa was really good. For an appetizer we had the edamame, which was a good portion and taste. It could've used some salt but that's an easy fix. I had the chicken curry. While it was creamy, and tasty, the flavors were there, and it wasn't missing anything traditionally found in the dish, it wasn't 5 stars because it could have been a better portion. I thought the portions were a little small. I don't think I have a reason to be back since it's the same price range as Siam Sushi, and right down the block. I don't think it compares to Siam. First time eating here. It is my mom's 80th Birthday. I have never been a big fan of this kind of food. I used Open Table to book our reversation. We were early but they greeted us with a big smile and knew what I requested. We were taken to our table and given the menu but was not sure what it all ment. Our server was Victoria and she went over it all with us and helped us picked some of the perfect things to eat. We loved the fried rice with vegetables, spring rolls and crab wontons. Our server Victoria kept our drinks full and ask us many times if we liked everything and if she could help us. We will be back with more family. read more

I'm starting to think the weird parking is just a Tallahassee problem. I think they have valet service Monday-Saturday, but I will be honest I would rather just park myself and not have to worry about tipping someone else. A good parking situation can really make or break my first impression of a restaurant so I was a little iffy when I saw the small (and full) lot right outside the doors. Luckily for me once I was inside I was much more impressed. I had booked a reservation on OpenTable (one of the FEW Tallahassee restaurants that utilizes this app) and was pleased to find that we were even given a table in the front of the restaurant a little tucked away from the rest of the patrons. The service was quick, the seating spacious, and the ambiance of the restaurant felt both classy and cozy at the same time. Our waiter, Rivers, was 60/40. When he was smiling or offering advice it was extremely helpful, but another large chunk of the time he spent avoiding eye contact and being very short (which I did not appreciate - especially after being spoiled by the quality of service at Nefertari's last week). One of our guests ordered the calamari and edamame for appetizers. The calamari was top notch and wonderfully breaded. I ordered the Thai Coconut Curry with shrimp and a side of rice and a glass of White Zinfandel to go along with it. The curry dish was creamy, fresh, and delicious while the wine was soft and sweet (as I love!). Some of the other crowd pleasers at the table were the tuna steak, Tom Yum soup, some beef dish wrapped in asparagus and an assortment of sushi. The portion sizes were favorable and everything looked amazing. I was also impressed with how handy they were with the amount of meat each person was given (there was definitely no shortage of shrimp in my dish or chicken in the Tom Yum soup). Overall the food was definitely the best part (as it should be) and will be the main reason that I suggest people visit Masa. The menu has an almost overwhelming amount of options though, so don't be afraid to ask your waiter for help (even if they look a little grumpy). read more

I am in Tallahassee for work this week and a friend recommended that I try Masa. When I pulled up at the restaurant it looked like it was part of a run down strip mall. Living in tampa I have learned not to judge things like that, and I was happy when I opened the door and the interior of the restaurant was clean and tastefully decorated. All of the wait staff seemed really young and the one next to my table was chatting with one of her friends who was dining about spring break towns. I am not so used to college towns but it was also nice to hear some southern accents again. The sushi menu is large like a paper placemat and you can mark which appetizers and rolls you want. I started off with the avocado and crabmeat salad appetizer. It. Was. Amazing. And also big enough to be a meal in itself. There was a big portion of fresh lump crab, spring mix greens, and sliced avocado. The ginger dressing was light and didn't overpower the rest. I absolutely loved it. Needless to say when I got my two sushi rolls I was no longer very hungry. My favorite of the two was the mango tango. It was a crab and cream cheese roll with mango and cooked tuna piled on top. The cooked tuna was unique and in a very tasty almost teriyaki sauce. Very fresh. My second roll was the vegetarian spider roll. Instead of soft shell crab it had tempura vegetables. There was also cream cheese, lettuce, and a topping of eel sauce and spicy sauce. My problem with this roll was that the vegetable was overwhelmingly fried onions. There are few (veggie) things I don't like but fried onions are at the top. Overall this was a great dining experience and I'd definitely go back and try other rolls if I'm in the area again. read more

I'm going to split this review because I went to Masa two nights in a row. Sushi (for Tallahassee) 4 Pad Thai - 1 Sushi was great. I recommend hot mess and red dragon. I ordered both without cream cheese and they were excellent. On the second night, I ordered Pad Thai to go. It was horrible. Have you ever had freezer burnt bread? You know that weird after taste? That's what the pad Thai tasted like. It tasted nothing like pad Thai. The sauce was far too heavy and syrupy. Worst pad Thai I've had in Tallahassee so far. I didn't hate this place. I guess you just have to have good timing on when to come. One late Thursday night, must have been bad timing. One friend was inside holding our table for dear life as the rest of our party played bumper cars trying to find a parking lot. The possibility of getting towed slimmed our initial party of 7 down to 4. Place is somewhat cramped. It just has that feeling like one extra chair can't fit anywhere, but beautiful design and helpful servers. Dinner started with Philadelphia Cream Cheese Wonton (they were good but they taste about the same everywhere) and Miso Soup (ditto on the soup). Now the table went around tasting a bit of everything. Jumbo Shrimp Pasta with Green Curry (nice dish, but it's feels like green dyed curry), Thai Coconut Curry Chicken (LOVE IT -wish I ordered it), Grilled Garlic Sesame Glazed Salmon (well seasoned just a little dry for my taste), and Stir-Fried Trio with Broccoli (it was an okay dish) I love sushi, but not a a guru. So it first has to look good then or course taste good. I can't remember what we had but EVERYTHING was all very good. I found the cost didn't match the quality of food serve. If you are looking for a solid date spot with a great sushi menu I would check out this spot. Been here a few times and the food is pretty solid. Again not that 5 stars for me as im a sushi connoisseur but overall they have great food. Pricy a bit to Tallahassee standards but a great spot. Ask for a booth if able when reserving a table. They are dimly lit and really compliment the ambiance making the experience a little more private. Getting tables around the outside noise tends to carry and you may just hear conversations from other tables lol. read more

I've been here twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. The food is fine but not good enough to cover for the horrible service and filthy tables. When my family went for dinner, we had to wait for a table by the bar and the floor was so sticky I almost walked out of my shoes. I'm not even joking, my heel slid out. How long ago has the floor been mopped? The service at dinner was horribly slow, some things never made it to the table, even though the server was nice. The service was considerably better for lunch, but still way slower than it should be. I understand if a place is busy but when you are sitting there among filthy tables that haven't been bussed since the table left who knows how long ago, looking over to see servers hanging out and chatting feels pretty unacceptable. We started frequenting MASA when it was one of the few sushi bars in town. The old storefront provided a quick counter bar or sit down toppers for couples or groups. The newer digs sports that, dressed uber chic, and more; an outdoor covered deck facing our main drag and beautiful Lake Ella. Tonights full moon and mild weather beckoned us to the deck. Asian cuisine of all types frequently fits into our routine. Sushi, pho, curry, lo-mein, etc. all good and all now readily available within blocks of home. We had no cravings or dishes in mind tonight, but the sushi menu appeased us both. Edamame with the small up charge of bean sauce was the beginning course. Their bean sauce was full of sweet-sour and umami with a touch of heat. Superb! We packaged up that elixir and brought it home. So good. A veggie roll brought a cucumber wrapped roll of asparagus, avocado, carrots and matchstick veggies, dressed in piquant vinegar. A perfect foil with my plate of dragon roll. Krab (delicious, don't judge) fish roe, tempura flakes and avocado. My companion enjoyed a shrimp tempura roll that exceeded expectations. We have been disappointed that one of our favorite dishes was scrapped in the move to Lake Ella. We loved the tropical sweet and sour chicken. With strawberries, melon and a unique sauce, we miss it terribly! But, kudos for a broad menu with much to please most everyone. I was thrilled to be able to get a shot of Akashi whisky with my Kirin. Japanese whisky's are sublime and well worth giving a fair trial to! With the many Asian restaurants, sushi bars and cafe's in town, competition is very keen, but Masa comes through as a fine competitor and one to be on the short list for dinner or lunch! read more

We made a reservation at this place and the table was ready on time which is a nice touch for a Saturday. The restaurant has an upscale feel but the environment is quite casual/mixed. Our server was new and she was polite and lovely. I'm giving the experience 3 stars because the food we received was just "okay." The fried rice was very dry, the tuna steak was a bit dry as well, we weren't offered desert and food took a bit to arrive. Might as well have saved 30 dollars and got better food at panda express. The grill marks on the teriyaki chicken came straight from the factory, and they basically boiled it for that uncanny rubbery texture. The mixed vegetables were remarkably flavorless. They would have more flavor raw, except for the carrots which were actually raw. Somehow the fried rice felt like regular steamed rice only they accidentally spilled soy sauce on it. Actually I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened. Now the sushi was pretty good, but it was only a salmon seaweed roll, and the only way you could mess that up is if I find out it gave me explosive diarrhea. Here's one extra star because the egg drop soup was good. Overall 50 dollars of food came in a bag the size of a kindergarteners backback which should be a pretty good warning sign that you're about to get screwed. read more
