i consider myself a bit of a ramen snob. In my world...there are very few bowls of bad ramen. Ramen is either good, very good, excellent or my newest category, transcendent! I had a bowl of the "Broke da Mouth" tonsuka ramen at Masa. I was flat out surprised and smitten! There are three unique elements to this bowl: 1) the noodles come from an artisanal ramen noodle maker. They are really, really good. Who thought noodles would make such a difference...they do. 2) the bowl arrives with a snow drift of parmesan cheese on top. Who puts parmesan cheese on ramen?! I shrugged my shoulders and stirred it into the broth. The first bite transported me somewhere between Rome and Tokyo. The flavors are sublime and these ribbons of gooey cheese get incorporated into bites of noodle, pork and mushroom. I beleive the humble parmesan addition is their "secret sauce". 3) Finally, the egg. The humble egg is usually an afterthought. You get a whole egg with a semi-soft center. My oh my. It is perfect. I summary. Go have a bowl of ramen at Masa. You will not be sorry. Just got back from Maui and this was better than most if not all of the restaurants I dined at there. I had the Ox Tail ramen, mochiko chicken, and brussels sprouts. All three were fantastic. They even make their own ramen noodles! My one point of constructive feedback would be more attentive service. We had to flag down our service and ask for most everything (silverware, plates, beverage refills). The busyness and layout of the restaurant could have contributed to the service quality. read more

We were looking for some takeout for dinner and came across this new family owned place. I ordered 1 order of masubi, 2 orders of kuni ramen one with spice and one without, and a loco moco. When I got home and took out all the food, they had given me 4 orders of spam masubi instead of my loco moco. It was a little frustrating initially, but I called back and they were very accommodating and apologetic about the order. We ended up forgoing the loco moco and ate the masubi instead. The masubi was AMAZING. It was the best masubi I've ever had (and I've eaten A LOT of spam masubi). They seasoned their rice with furikake and the rice to spam ratio was so good. The ramen was also very good. I haven't found a lot of good ramen spots in the east bay, but this place is pretty solid. I ordered a 4 for the spice thinking it wasn't going to be too spicy but it was very spicy. So beware when they say spicy they mean spicy. Overall I really enjoyed the restaurant and would come back, and I would definitely order more spam masubi than just 1 order. read more

A group of us visited for the first time for lunch. We enjoyed the 808 chicken and Brussels sprouts for appetizers. The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender inside. The Brussels sprouts were dusted with Parmesan cheese and came with a Japanese mayo based dipping sauce. Most of us had ramen--either the Diamond Head or Kilauea. The pork bone soup was perfect! The spicy broth eaters recommend a level "2" so as not to overwhelm the other flavors. (You can ask for hot sauce on the side) The likikoi juice was tangy and unsweetened. The only "wish for" was brown rice from my friend who ordered the loco moco. Would have been nice for those on special diets. All in all, lovely place with friendly people! read more

I had to come back again to try more menu items and I had the BROKE DA MOUTH - MASA SPECIAL, pork broth infused with black garlic oil, garlic butter, and topped with parmesan cheese. So ono (delicious)! My other favorites include Da Kine Chicken, Da Plattah, Spam Musubi, and Choke Fries. Being from Hawai'i, it's so nice to feel the aloha spirit once you enter the restaurant. The staff and chef are warm and personable with all the patrons. If you're looking to eat some Hawaiian/Japanese food, Masa Ramen & Bistro won't disappoint. It will make you come back for more. We had dinner on a Sunday night. Started with the Brussels sprout appetizer and 808 chicken. Entrees we're the Diamond Head ramen, Pulehu ribs platter, and Da Platter. We also got the spam and egg musubi. We liked the entrees. The ramen broth had good flavor and they use thin noodles. The platters had good portions. There was a little too much rice in the musubi. I tried Masa Ramen the other day and I give it a solid 4/5. The food was tasty, we ordered one of the spicy ramens, chicken Katsu, tako and a chicken appetizer. All of the ramens have fresh handmade noodles and you are able to adjust the spice level. The Katsu was good portion size and the tako was very good. Service was okay but that was because they only had one host/server at the time that we went at. However I believe this is a good place to go for portions of food and value! We were lucky to find this gem after some Berkeley activities. We saw the Hawaii fusion menu on Yelp and knew we had to try this out, and we're so glad we did. The mochiko chicken and spam musubi were on point, and ramen was flavorful. Best of all, the service was excellent and they cleaned up a broken glass after my son dropped it and were so, so kind about the accident. The icing on the cake was that the owners are from Hawaii (I *had* to ask)! The menu and Hawaiian vibe from the music to the "aloha" showed by their workers suggested that. My family and I went to this restaurant on a Thursday Morning. When we went in the restaurant , we asked to be sat in a different seat before we sat down. The worker tried to argue and refused to let us sit somewhere else. When she finally budged, she had a sour expression on her face and refused to listen to us. We had requested her not to move the table to make it easier for her but she still moved it. She stormed back into the kitchen and didn't come back out. We ordered the Diamond Head ramen, spam musubi, loco moco plate and chicken katsu. The food was great, service was friendly amd fast and the restaurant was clean. I usually do not choose ramen- especially for take out- but their soup base was delicious and the pork melts in your mouth! The Loco Moco was good and the patties were flavorful. Although they serve potatoes salad instead of Mac salad with their Hawaiian food, this will be our go-to place when we want Hawaiian food. I have never had fresh parmesan cheese on my ramen before and it so mixed well with the rest of the ramen bowl. Coming from San Diego for a quick get-away, visiting Masa Ramen Bistro was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. I enjoyed the Broke Da Mouth Ramen so much that I ordered 2 to go to take back to San Diego so my kids could enjoy the ramen as well. My to go order was packaged carefully and I was given clear instructions by Clyde on how to heat it up when I got back home.
