I didn't know this amazing gem existed and best part is that it's located down the street from my teaching school site. I wanted caldo de pollo but it is hard to find a place that makes great caldo full of flavor and harder to find is any restaurants that offer tortilla made by hand. I came in today and inside is beautiful and let me tell you when I saw the size of the tortilla, I knew I was in for a great meal. The caldo de pollo is seasoned perfectly, no need to add anything to it. I also ordered their enchiladas Michoacanas and both meals taste close to my mom's. Portion is large with 5 enchiladas and the sauce is great. I AM going to come back as much as I as I can to sample their menu and I am also going to share it with the other teachers and staff. Delicious Hole in the Wall...Downtown Santa Ana. I don't recall how long they have been there but I believe it's been quite sometime. We started off with the frijoles puercos and queso con chorizo...they came with piping hot fresh homemade corn tortillas...I could have just eaten them!! So delicious to have just a homemade tortillas!! But when it's a new place we like to try various dishes...so we ordered on!! I was craving a torta so I ordered a carnitas one...the waitress who was very helpful suggested jack cheese on it..because i asked cheese be on it...it was spot on and huge...i managed to eat half & brought the rest home. Mom loves a good Huevos Rancheros so she ordered that...a bit spicy for her..but at her ripe age of 88 most things are...so she ordered a ice cold modelo to help wash it down.The waitress was also very patient with her...My friend Guerra loves a good Chile Relleno& caldo...I noticed the menu had a caldo de Chile Rellenos...Perfect.She throughly enjoyed it..said it had good flavor and plenty to take leftovers home! I believe we also ordered Jamaica which was good. We had a delicious lunch and can't wait to return! She also had some good specials with Nopales and Hígado(liver). Was feeling under the weather and craving some caldo de res (beef stew). Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The broth was so flavorful and the meet and veggies were cooked very nicely. The great reviews on yelp sent me here and most people rave about the enchiladas so that's what I ordered. I am glad I did. It was early afternoon and I was the only customer. As soon as I ordered I could hear the meat hit the griddle and the cook tossing and chopping the meat as it cooked. This means I'm going to get fresh enchiladas that aren't premade casserole style. As expected the plate came out with three perfect Carne Asada enchiladas, rice, beans and salad. The salad is undressed but very fresh. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The buttery pinto beans were the best I have had in OC so far. I could just eat a bowl of beans. The star of the show was the enchiladas which were made with a special thin white corn tortilla filled with fresh moist Carne Asada. The red sauce had a ton of flavor without heat. I was very impressed by this plate and will be back soon. Since everything is made from scratch I would feel confident to try everything. read more

For someone that comes from Michoacan, this establishment definitely hit the mark! Restaurant Mary's is an amazing, small local restaurant in city's downtown area. The decor is simple but gorgeous. Heavy wooden tables lined with hand carved and painted chairs, each one with a different design. The server was very kind and attentive. We were given some chips with house made salsa to start, the chips were fresh and delicious. The green and red salsa were homemade and the red salsa had a very nice heat to it, made me perspire a bit lol but trust me when I say that I love spicy food and this was a solid 7 of 10 on the heat scale. The appetizer we ordered was their choriqueso, melted cheese topped with sautéed to perfection chorizo. Rich and delicious! The tortillas, the deliciously handmade tortillas!! Wow what a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It definitely brought back memories of my grandmothers handmade tortillas. Thick and hearty deliciousness. For the main course, we ordered the pork chuletas in red sauce and the michoacan enchiladas. Both dishes were superb. The thin cut pork chops were seasoned to perfection and were swimming in a delicious red sauce. Paired with perfectly cooked beans and rice (not from a can or bag by the way). The enchiladas were very simple and delicious, trust me when I say that these "simple" enchiladas are packed with flavor. Served just like mom would serve with a side of lechuga and a hearty piece of steak to boot. Yum!! I also ordered a Tamarindo and horchata, the Tamarindo agua was fantastic. Great flavor. The horchata was a bit of a miss for my liking. Needed a bit more cinnamon and sugar in my personal opinion. I am so glad we happen to find this hidden gem while traveling. I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this authentic Mexican restaurant, but I did... and that's all that matters! This is literally a hole-in-the-wall. You know it's legit when you walk in and it's filled with locals! It wasn't even noon yet, and there were only 2 tables left. I took photos of the entire menu so you can get an idea of all the items that they offer. As soon as I sat down at the table, the server brought over fresh chips and 2 different types of salsas. One of the salsas was thick, and it was perhaps one of the best salsas I have ever had. I ordered the carne asada chilaquiles with red sauce. The carne asada was one of the tastiest I've ever had. It's thin, flavorful and works really well with the chilaquiles. The chilaquiles were crunchy and topped with cotija cheese, dollops of sour cream and a tasty red sauce. The plate was ginormous, and believe it or not I ate the entire thing in one sitting. The service was friendly, fast & efficient, except at the end. I had to walk up to the kitchen area to ask for the check. This is a small mom & pop type of restaurant and they only had 2-3 workers there.
