We picked up a leaflet about this walking route recently and gave it a try yesterday! We took a 61 bus from near the Central Station in Glasgow and got off at Maryhill Library (the 119 and 40 go there too), then around the corner of Gairbraid St and to the end of Burnhouse St to access the path alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal. In actual fact the circular route, in the guide book, starts from a slightly different place, but this is the nearest access point to the canal and we were anxious to get onto the tow path as soon as possible!
From there we walked west to where the canal passes over the top of the River Kelvin, then accessed the river path to walk south. Of course, there are many different ways to do the walk but, whichever way you choose, there are beautiful and fascinating things to see, a wealth of history to discover and public art to enjoy.
These include the Burgh Halls with gorgeous stained glass and attractive wrought iron work; the superb fireman gates by sculptor Andy Scott, Victorian Baths and Wash-house; the picturesque and wonderful V-shaped weir, gorgeous Kelvin Aqueduct and five canal locks and basins, and much more besides. (I shall write separate reviews about some of these things)
There are beautiful trees along the way and I'm sure, in spring and summer, there must be many wild flowers to see and different birds. I saw several deserted nests in the bare trees yesterday.
