There was no greeting, no smile, no pleasantries of any kind - in fact, she could scarcely be bothered to speak. The room was OK, with all the usual things you come to expect - comfortable bed, sofa, television, tea and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately, the water in the bathroom was never more than lukewarm which was very disappointing after a day of travelling when I was looking forward to a relaxing bath!! I had a nice conversation with the cleaning staff on the morning of the 30th. They were delightful - all friendly, smiley and helpful - far better than the elderly receptionist. I think Travelodge should put one of them on Reception instead. There's a Little Chef on site and the parking is good - a huge pylon stands on the grass just beside the car park.

The bleak prison-like hallways were the first thing to greet me, as was the confusing yet nonetheless horrible smell that accompanied the visuals. It did not make me feel comfortable. Upon entering my room, the first thing I noticed was the frayed, sticky and warn carpet with chewing gum blobs stuck in to the tread. I pressed the dirty light switch and it illuminated the rest of what was around me - marked walls and surface tops were the first thing to greet me; closely followed by a confusing smell that I could not place but essentially smelled heavily of an indescribable ethnic food. I was particularly cheered up by the booger that was stuck on the wall next to the bed. All of the furniture was heavily worn, discoloured and dirty. My next trip was to the bathroom, which to be fair to them, was cleaned to a decent standard. I never understand why most Travelodge beds seem to have the foot end of the mattress resting higher than the head. It is quite disconcerting when you later get in a lay down. When I finally peeled back the sheets (believe me, I inspected every area of those sheets to make sure that they were at least clean enough to lay down on) and got in, pretty much the whole bed engulfed me as there was no firmness in the mattress at all. It was pretty much a broken bed. One big mistake that I made was revealing the grey, stained, ugly duvet that was wrapped in the hospital white sheets. Another nice touch to the decor of the room was that each one of the four plastic wall mounted light shades were hanging at an angle away from the wall. However, all of this being said I will still give at least one star to the Travelodge because they are one of the few places that still have a Gideon Bible installed in the room, yes indeed, the ninja-like Gideons had paid a visit to my room prior to me. The food in the restaurant is exceptional, and the bar downstairs has a nice atmosphere in the evenings. The free wifi works everytime I've used it, and the views across to the football ground are very nice. The sports bar in the football ground stand is also a nice place to head - and bar bills can be stuck on your room tab! Really hard to fault the hotel - always clean, always a good nights sleep.

The restaurant is really good for that special occasion and the prices are not too bad. Kilmarnock FC were the first club to have a hotel and sports complex together. The Hotel offers a Cafe Bar which does some nice snack and light lunches during the day and at nigh it turns in to a cocktail bar. The Blues Restaurant allows the diner to eat really good meals and have a view over Rugby Park itself. There is also a gym in the complex where if you are luck you can meet the Kilmarnock players. My mum still tells stories about meeting Ally Mcoist and Ian Durrant there. Tours of the football ground can also be arranged at the Hotel.

I opted for lasagne which was served with salad and chips. It almost reminded me of a school lunch in that it was comforting. Hubby's burger was well seasoned and quite tasty! Dessert was homemade profiteroles in chocolate sauce. It was tasty but didn't rock the tastebuds. It's a little out the way from Glasgow as it's just outside of Kilwinning. However there's a good sized car park and the staff are simply lovely. Great value for money in that we both had 3 courses and a few non alcoholic drinks for the grand total of £25. Everyone had a great time and the hotel even provided ice cream to go along with Pop's birthday cake. The only major complaint would again be the lack of air conditioning in the hot and stuffy room...... with global warming, one day, Scotland too will need to break down and at least get some ceiling fans to move the air around!!!

The bar area is a lovely old fashioned affair, and well recommended. Better hotels can be found in the area, for a similar price.

There's such a huge amount of choice to suit most people, from youngsters wanting lots of noisy nightlife, and couples with young children, to older people who want some peace and quiet (like us!!) There is apparently, a type of Thomas Cook holiday which comes under the name of 'Style', which caters for those who want something quieter but a bit special. Jacqueline who attended to us was extremely nice, with all the facts and figures at her fingertips (as you would expect). We are now armed with all the relevant magazines to read through so that we can make a choice at our convenience!

It's tough to manage even opening luggage for 1, much less 2 people. There are no drawers. No hangars. Theres an annoying amount of drinks to buy in the room that take up valuable space. Things didn't work - phone, radiator, fan, sink. The bed in their 'king' room was a full size. I wanted to give it a higher rating for charm but simply can't until they make better use of the space in each room.
