In my years of school and even in my years studying Scottish related subjects at university I had not experienced Burns cottage until today. How can this be?! I'm glad I came here with a German friend - you always appreciate Scotland with new eyes when you're day tripping with a visitor! We had a fantastic time - the staff were friendly and helpful, it was perfectly preserved and although they are working in a confined space and can't do much to change their utilities, their modest displays were fashioned expertly. The rooms were kept in as accurate conditions as possible and there were sound effects and displays to transport you back to the time of Burns. The cottage itself was breathtaking - a lot of money looks like it's been spent on it to keep it in the condition it's in. It's informative and simple so anyone can enjoy it. For four pounds (and £2 for children), this is fantastic value for experiencing a slice of Scottish history. Great for the Burns enthusiast but accessible for all, it's remarkable that the Burns cottage is kept pristine like this after all these years. Wonderful. read more

This is a lovely little museum that marks the birth place of Robert Burns - which is celebrating 250 years this year! The museum wouldn't take up much of your time to explore if you were in the area with some time on your hands. As such the entry price is reasonable or free to Nation Trust members. Theres a lovely little shop opposite and a fantastic cafe too with fabulous cakes! Theres a free car parking less than 100ms away from the cottage. Theres a lovely pub about 5/10minutes walk down the road and a visitor centre thats expanding which also has a gift shop, cafe and facilities. If you're ever in Ayr and you have a few hours (or longer to spare) a visit to the Burns Cottage and Museum, only a short distance away in Alloway would not be a waist of time. The site where the famous Scottish Bard and Poet, Rabbie Burns was born has been wonderfully restored and depicts how the young Rabbie once lived over 200 years ago. Burns cottage is situated just outside Ayr in a quaint place called Alloway. Burns cottage is the Birth place of the famous poet Robert Burns. It has been displayed they way the cottage was when Robert Burns lived there. It is a small quaint cottage with a thatched roof and can easily be seen when driving through Ayr and Alloway. It is drenched in history and walking through you can imagine what it would have been like living there all those years ago. This charming cottage is easy to find in the small town of Alloway, just a few miles outside of Ayr. The cottage were Robert Burns was born is part of the larger burns heritage park which allows you to visit the famous Auld Kirk and Brig o Doon, there is also a cafe and the Tam o Shanter experience which was slightly disappointing. The cottage itself has been wonderful preserved (it was build in 1757) and is worth half an hour of your time. It costs £4 for an adult pass, £2.50 per child or £10 for a family pass. read more

The museum is in two portions, a 10 minute walk apart. Burns birthplace is the actual house, with many original artifacts. There are some multimedia displays and docents in period costumes who offer explanations and background. The other area includes the museum, with extensive, modern displays on Burns' life and work. The gardens outside are pleasant, and there's an observation tower that gets you a somewhat aerial view. Immediately adjacent is the Brig o' Doon stone arch bridge.
