I'm teaching classes here this week and ordered donuts for the class participants. I picked up two dozen donuts every day for five days, and I sampled several different donuts during the week. I was disappointed with the donuts. After reading the great reviews I was expecting some incredible donuts. But I found them to be dry, and too sweet. It could just be that I prefer light donuts with more flavor. But I wasn't a fan of the texture, and they definitely tasted dry. My order was always ready on time, and the employees were always very friendly. The shop is attractive. The donuts were large and attractively decorated. I'll never understand why this town likes these donuts so much. Literally every time I have them they're dry and/or over cooked. I've never had a good donut here. I try them every once in a while just to see if they're any better. This most recent time I had a French curler which are my favorite. Had these catered in for a work event and my God these donuts are fantastic! I tried the maple glazed yeast. The maple frosting melts in your mouth and is full of maple flavor! YUM! These are the tastiest, freshest doughnuts in Lafayette! The cost is low and the doughnuts are wonderful. Seeing the building evoked a sense of nostalgia in me--I remember visiting a small A-frame style doughnut shop with a U-shaped indoor counter regularly back in Chicagoland and was excited to see that same structure out in Indiana. The doughnuts are so delicious! My favorite is the custard-filled chocolate glazed, though you really can't go wrong here. They're also known for their apple fritters, but my heart is with that custard-filled doughnut! Definitely worth a visit. Dropped by during "rush hour" Saturday morning. The drive-through was long but the service was so efficient we got through in no time. Tried the following: 1) Regular ring donut with chocolate icing 2) Red velvet cake donut 3) Cream cheese danish pastry The regular chocolate donut was as per the usual. The red velvet was very good - super moist and decadent. Would recommend it! The cream cheese danish pastry is an interesting one. It has both cream cheese and a sugar glaze on top, so with every bite you get a hit of sweetness mixed in with the cheesy/salty flavour. I kinda liked it, but I can imagine it wouldn't be for everyone. All of this plus a small coffee for less than $6. Worth it. read more

I'm writing this with the donut sweats. It's like the meat sweats but better. So I live in Westfield but I work in Lafayette currently. One of my co workers has the hookup for this place and I "usually" have some semblance of self control but honey no. On this night there has been zero self control. I don't take pictures at work because work = hospital and hospital = HIPPA and I don't play that so look at the other people's pictures. Maple round donut: 10/10. A freaking classic. 10pm I know it isn't "fresh" so if I'm giving a couple hour donut a big rating you know it's fire when it's fresh. Came back an hour later for a red velvet cake donut. 8/10 because red velvet is hit or miss for me, but I'm fat so I was about it. Came back 3 hours later to this box of donuts. Blueberry did not disappoint. I ate it instead of my low carb sensible lunch and I'm not mad about it. 9/10 blueberry. I can't say anything about the ambiance. I might go find it and try it! Absolutely love Mary Lou's. Unfortunately they have made a few poor choices recently that are greatly impacting the quality of the product that used to be found here. With the recent expansion store completed on the east side of Lafayette, they are no longer making donuts fresh at the 4th street location. The donuts that you will get now are going to be 2-3 days old and in most cases the glaze will no longer be glaze. The glaze melts, the donuts dry out, and the flavor just isn't what it should be. I hope they will soon return to cooking fresh at the original location, in the mean time of you want the best experience you're only option is to head over to the store on the east side of town. read more

This doughnut place is slam packed every time we drive by so of course we had to stop and check it out. We ordered a dozen assorted doughnuts online for about $10. They were ready in about 10 minutes and a staff member brought them out to us. I do recommend ordering online so you can avoid waiting behind 20 other cars, however the downfall is we did not get to pick what types of doughnuts we wanted. That being said, every single doughnut we have eaten thus far has been absolutely delicious. They are sweet, soft, and there is no doubt they're freshly made. I have been to this place here and there for the past 15 years. Truthfully, they sold their ownership years ago and it has never really tasted the same since. Its not terrible, you can pretty much expect what you get. One thing that has confused me about this place for a long time is their prices. For a muffin it is $2.50. The muffin is the same size as a muffin youd make at home. The cinnamon rolls are bigger than your head l, and also $2.50. I have went to Mary Lou Donuts for years and I have never got a bad donut. I usually order 6 maple nut, 3 chocolate sprinkle & 3 white sprinkle. Today I arrived around 9:30am for my regular order. I was embarrassed when I presented my donuts as shared gift this morning. Donuts were not only over cooked and dry they had very little icing on them. This was a huge disappointment. I've been all over. These donuts are not special, so i struggle to understand the adoration of the locals. I wonder if it is because A) they're cheap B) they're local or C) they have way too much sugar in them. This place should be called Dominos sugar shack. Nobody on here can tell you exactly what their prices are. THEY DON'T POST THEIR PRICES. Nobody can easily tell you what donuts they carry. THERE IS NO MENU. This is my hometown, this is my childhood and it's a staple when I come back home for a visit. The remodel is a great set up and the staff is always so friendly. OMG YOU HAVE TO TRY THEIR COOKIES!!! I lived in Lafayette for years and years before trying out their sugar cookies. Of course the donuts are great, and it's a fun place for a quick snack. BUT THE COOKIES! They are the perfect softness, thick, and a slightly spiced taste. The frosting is amazing, and they are better quality, better tasting, and CHEAPER than pre-packaged cookies you buy anywhere else. I want to live here. Seriously. The minute you get out of your car, you can smell the freshly fried donuts in the air. You're not human if that smell doesn't instantly get your mouth watering. I got the apple fritter which was HUGE. I could only finish half of it and took the rest back with me but it was delicious. Super crispy on the outside but soft and warm inside. I was lucky enough to get them while they were still warm and it was amazing. That giant thing for $1.50 is a steal. My friend got a half dozen glazed donuts which he promptly inhaled as we sat down. The whole box was about $3.50 which is some dirt cheap pricing for the quality. Like others have mentioned, the staff is by no means warm and cuddly but they weren't rude either. Don't expect smiles as you walk in but I'm sure they're just preoccupied with not eating everything in the store. I will 100% be back (probably tomorrow) to try what other donuts they have. This location is outside of downtown and a couple miles from Purdue's campus and I had passed it probably a dozen times before noticing it. They have a drive through to get your donuts or walk inside to check out the large selection. Now I did select a blueberry cake donut which was bigger than most location cake donuts and very good the cherry mini cupcake was a little to much artificial flavoring for me.
