Exteeeeeeensive breakfast and brunch menu - all day long! We were welcomed and served by a legendary front of house coffee guy, who was so so nice. My friend and I shared the breakfast bruschetta - 2 pieces of toast topped with cheese, roasted tomatoes, poached eggs and pesto. Cafe Martini is a sensational south King Street institution that is not going anywhere. Do we try somewhere new or go to Martini? Should have gone to Martini because the new places are new for a reason. Its busy, bustling and friendly, with Mr Martini working as the barista and greeting you upon arrival. That's nice in the morning, isn't it?! All day breakfast is oh so appealing on any day of the week, not just relegated to dirty hungover weekends at 3pm. The coffee is good, and it's kind of cool that the coffee machine is on a bar along one wall, so you can see all the action. Makes it more homely. The cool thing about Martini is that at night it becomes Bartini and they serve booze. Woohoo!! read more

We used to be regulars at Martini's. The coffee was always great and there was the added bonus that it was (and is) one of the most child friendly cafes in Newtown. There are large upstairs rooms to lounge in and a sunny courtyard out back. We went back today after a couple of years' absence to find that it's still as friendly as ever, the courtyard is even more inviting, and Tini's coffee is still amongst the best in Newtown. The big change is that the cafe is also licenced and has a bar for a late night drink or two. Apart from coffees my partner ordered a South Sydney Eggs (poached eggs with bright red roasted capsicum, tomato, and pesto - the colours of the local rugby league team). Eeverything was perfect. Tasty organic eggs, cooked just right so the yolk oozed out at the first prick of the fork, and fresh pesto and vegetables rounded the meal out perfectly. I ordered a burger and chips - a basic option again that Martini's was able to transform with a beautifuly cooked, juicy patty and a terrific salsa that took it to another level. If there's one flaw about Sydney it's that they think drinking before noon is WEIRD! I was called weird at an antique shop when I asked an employee where can I find a drink around here? I guess the Aussies don't like to drink too early but have they ever heard of mimosas?!?! The most acceptable way to get drunk before noon. Anyway, the employee didn't know where to send me as it's rare for places to serve alcohol before noon. SO, I walk around the neighborhood and continue shopping around and come upon this gem! I walk in and ask the waitress "are you serving alcohol" and she says "of course!" ha, just what I wanted to hear. The people who work here are very nice, they like to interact with their customers and they don't make you feel like a weirdo for having a stiff whisky before noon. I'm no alcoholic but when I vacation, I VACATION! I felt very comfortable and welcomed. I wish I found this place earlier, but unfortunately came upon it on my last day in Sydney. I'm just glad I found it just in case I make my way to that part of the world again. NOW GO! read more

There was a crowd gathered out front when we attended on New Years Day and the front area appeared full, but we were encouraged by the barista to check in the back and we found one table left. Definitely a popular destination. Ordered Meat Monstro breakfast, my partner got French Toast w/ fruit. Add an OJ and coffee and you're looking at around $50 for two people. Service at the table was reasonably prompt, although I had to go to the bar to remind them of my coffee, and then it only came as I was finishing my meal. Water for table also failed to arrive from our order so I needed to retrieve myself. Only minor things really but seems simple to get right. Other than that the staff were friendly and polite and seemed to serve each table quickly enough. Some other customers appeared to have some incorrect orders delivered but we had no issue. The Meat Monstro was a generous portion as hoped for $20. Eggs poached nicely and still runny, sausages were tasty as was the sauteed mushroom. Baked beans were done perfectly with a little firmness left and my grilled roma tomato was good too. Tomato relish was fairly sweet but didn't overpower and the bacon could have been done a little longer but was still enjoyable. Thick buttered toast and hash brown was pleasant. My partner's french toast was spongey and swimming in maple syrup. The fruit was fresh and sweet and the OJ freshly squeezed. My long black coffee was nicely roasted and served not too hot. The most enjoyable part of Martini would be the lovely undercover area out back and the peaceful house cat who keeps you company while you eat. On a warm summer day you can sit shaded under overgrowth while the kitty snoozes in the seat next to you. Despite the minor service issue the deliciousness of the food and the peaceful outdoor area make this a 4-star experience and would return again. read more

My most recent stop at Martini, had me a little disappointed. The lamb and polenta which was by far my favourite menu item was served to me as a much smaller portion than in the past. I wont be back in a rush but eventually i will and hopefully Martini will redeem itself. Of course the service was charming and courtyard as adorable as ever. Friday night, date night, invitation to go see a muso friend of ours perform at Cafe Martini. What other excuses did we need? None, we were there. And so pleased we did. Cafe Martii didn't look like anything special - kind of had a Newtown urban grottiness about it - the decor, and the paintwork, and the furniture and the floors. We've seen worse. And we know how disappointed we often have walked away from swanky upmarket restaurants with over the top prices and very mediocre food. It's the humble little hole in the wall eateries that have our taste buds swinging from the chandeliers. We knew the waitress which was a bonus. With smiles all round she told us all about the goodies on the menu and that the serves were HUGE! We went for the stacks which was her recommendation - the smoked salmon and salad stack for my hubby date and for me the lamb, polenta and pesto. Both these dishes were awesome (yes we share and sample each other's dishes - one of the benefits of marriage). The live music was great thanks to our talented muso mate CJ Shaw and the Blow Ins - and with each of the three sets the volume got louder. Any place that offers T2 Russian Caravan Tea made in a teapot with leaf tea and not tea bags has great taste in my opinion. I enjoyed a lovely steaming pot of tea and we ordered the only dessert they had which was fresh hot cakes and ice cream with berry sauce and maple syrup we shared for dessert. These hotcakes (Like a thick pikelet )were awesome! So light and fluffy. Glad we only ordered one to share though cos what a generous serve. More than enough for two to share. I overheard the next table ooh and ah at the Chilli Baked Beans on the menu. Coool - that's our regular sunday night fare and so good to know a cafe has the taste and boldness to offer Baked Beans and honourable place on the all day breakfast menu. We'll come back to Cafe Martini cos this place is a delicious cocktail of good eats, value for money and nice vibe. read more

When i iived in Australia, on Broadway, I loved going to Martini's with my roomates. That's where i found out Eggs Benedict. My favourite brunch dish eversince. I have to admit that when i go for brunch wherever I am (Paris, NY), i always order Eggs Benedict, and i'm always not that satisfied as i find out they're not as excellent as Martini's. There's a nice mood and it's quite cheap (for an Australian place). To be recommended. read more

Having just moved into to the University of Sydney, breakfast groceries (or any groceries, really) have not been on my mind. Much easier, I figured, is sampling the local breakfast cafe scene in Newtown. Martini was my third place to try breakfast in the area (Hoochie Mama's and Brewtown Newtown) and it definitely took the top spot. Located on King Street, about a 15-minute walk from the edge of the Uni, Martini has a welcoming vibe and a superb soundtrack. This is before we even get to breakfast. I ordered the ricotta hotcakes with banana and bacon and it did not disappoint. The banana was definitely the best part, as it had a nice cinnamon glaze on it. But each aspect was very good in and of itself. The cafe was similar in terms of price to other places I had been, with $15 price tag for breakfast. There is also a nice outdoor seating section in the back that I noticed upon walking to the bathroom. That would be a nice place to try. Overall, I had a great experience at Martini and would definitely like to go again. Service is nothing to write home about, but that was not too big a concern. There was also enough seating to have my 4 friends and I have a fine amount of room, sometimes a challenge at breakfast cafes. But anyway, this place was a solid find and would recommend to anyone looking for good breakfast. read more

I've been a regular at this café for a very long time. I keep coming back because it has a quiet courtyard - a place where I can have a conversation with friends without being challenged by distracting piped music. There have been changes over the years, but the courtyard is always there. This was the first café in the southern end of King St. For a long time, it stood alone and became very popular. Other cafés eventually appeared next to it and so there are now lots of them along this end of King Street, but this is the place where it all started. read more

Delicious chai - not sickly sweet. Fresh raisin bread and quite a sizeable serving. Service was quick and polite.
