Oh dear.. think one of the reasons there's always loads of spaces is maybe the company policy on dress. Went in to our local Martha's in Redcar- obviously missed any sign on the entry about dress code, but sure its there somewhere- at about 11am on a filthy rainy weekday morning for a coffee & breakfast. Place was mostly empty but given the weather that was no great surprise, my partner & I were for sure not dressed up to the nines having been walking our dogs on the beach, but nor were we dressed sloppily or in dirty, drippy or smelly clothes. I think all they could see of me were black trousers & a navy parka, not too offensive I didn't think- my partner had on grey trousers & a blue jacket- a bit rained on both of us but no worse than anybody else in Redcar that morning.. & better than a few :-)- that was until Andy, my partner, went to order & was met my a rather officious young lady saying very loudly I'm afraid I will have to ask you to leave the premises. Rather shocked, Andy said I beg your pardon??.. the young lady then pointed at his trousers & said that stripes were not allowed.. a bit shocked we both looked down & sure enough his trousers did indeed have vertical stripes running down the leg. Soooo at the ripe old age of 51 years old, I have finally been thrown out of a pub for the first time in my life- Andy has been thrown out of a few in his time but never for wearing stripey pants. I could say I felt humiliated because this was in front of all of the other people- all dressed no doubt very properly & all staring at us- but I was too amazed & too busy laughing & there weren't that many folk in anyway, more staff than customers. Seriously though, I'll never attempt to go in there again, they obviously do not need our business or that of other stripey trousered customers, we went to a lovely little cafe a couple of doors away & made them & their customers (very full it was in there too!) laugh with our story .. & spent our money there instead. Well done Martha's Vineyard for throwing out a couple of middle aged troublemakers you sure can spot em!!! read more
