This is not a safe place to eat if you have allergies or intolerances. When I visited they didn't even have an allergen menu or guide anywhere (Huge red flag) after navigating the menu and trying to order a safe option, they lacked the ingredients to make it. They made a suggestion, and I asked again if It contained any of the allergens in question, and they assured me it didn't. The food arrived, I ate some, and realized there was in-fact one of the allergens in it. This level of negligence is appalling. I wouldn't even trust them if you don't have allergies. Nostalgia, more than anything else, makes me a fan of this place. Scream pub opposite the middlesbrough student union. It was refurbed during my time here more often, with industrial touches inspired by the area, long tables and post-it notes so people could pretend that they were revising. Drinks are cheap, staff are lovely, the hunter's chicken, the burgers and the parmo (slightly less guilt inducing than from a takeaway, and still a boro staple) were regular choices for our lot, along with the sauce game (we always cleared up, I promise). The Southfield pub is a great place to hang out with friends, get something to drink, or even some food if you're feeling a bit hungry. Its not the cheapest place in the area, but the atmosphere is usually good. They also play a good selection of music, and provide entertainment such as the weekly quiz, which challenges even the seasoned quiz buff. The outside beer garden is a great place to relax if its a bit too busy inside. If you enjoy playing pool, then theres always the 3 pool tables to have a few games with your mates. Fairly cheap food and drinks in a typical looking student venue. I don't like it as much as I used too since it was reopened but maybe that's cos I'm getting old. The discounts they give are reasonable and the ample seating outside is good (apart from some of the novelty furniture which takes up valuable space) The quality of food and drinks is pretty average as you would expect for this kind of place. It can get very busy on weekends. Once or twice I've been waiting 20 minutes to be served. On the flip side the food service is scarily quick. Friends often joke that if you order a beer and a burger your food beats you back to the table. This is a student pub, right next to university. The pub itself is quite small but there is lots of seating outside which is perfect for the summer. They run a discount scheme on drinks through what is called a yellow card but the drinks prices are that expensive to start with and the choice is good with some cocktails too. There is a video jukebox and several quiz machines for entertainmkent but the southfield do have djs, live muisc and quiz nights too. During the day you can get food too, which is a simple sandwich or burger with chip affair but its filling, tatsy and cheap. read more

The Southfield is located right across the road from the student union bar at Middlesbrough University so naturally it is quite a busy and popular place. Like many of the pubs in the centre of Middlesbrough it's a Scream pub so they offer you a yellow card if you are a student and you can get various discounts on drinks. The Southfield is mainly made up of Students and is set a little out of the city centre so tends not to get another audience. The have a beer garden outside which is ideal in the summer, considering the drinks are quite reasonably priced this can make for a good afternoon. The pub itself is very colourful and consists of big wooden tables. The have a couple or pool tables and a Juke box so the drinkers can pick the music. Because it is so close to the university they offer good food at a relatively cheap price, quite often at lunch time you can see the whole place full of student eating, either that or having a liquid lunch.
