The Royal Oak is situated at the top end of the High Street near the church and all the old man…read morepubs as I call them! We often start a night out at the Royal Oak as it is a good pub and a good place to catch up with friends, as the music is not too loud and there are plenty of places to sit. The toilets are upstairs so not ideal for disabled visitors! The drinks here do seem a little more expensive than most of the other pubs in the High Street. There is karaoke on a couple of times a week which does get very busy, and is always a good laugh. I've never eaten in the Royal Oak but I have heard other people say they've not been too impressed with the food, and I have also heard that it is becoming something of a gay bar, but in fairness Stockton no longer has any gay bars so why not? I would recommend the Royal Oak as a good place to meet friends before heading further into town for a night out.

I can't really give it more than three stars although the music has been good and uptempo so far. Maybe I'll change it to four. EDIT: yea, this queen's keeping the energy up with some good dance pop! 4 it is! EDIT 2: ok, someone just told me Monday night is student night in Newcastle. This place is definitely crowded.

The bar has a colourful history which continues to be colourful to this day. At one point, the Police closed it down - and with good reason. The Eagle is the kind of bar you would only go into by accident, unless you are the kind of Patron who takes their drinking very seriously indeed. If your car was to breakdown outside The Eagle, it would be safer to walk the lonely streets to find a telephone. Ive been in The Eagle once out of necessity and once is enough for anybody.

However, while walking down Gateshead I happened to notice the other bars on the block, that had a lot of rainbow flags, male and female symbols over the door frames. Before we walked in I was positive it was a gay bar. My boyfriend refused to believe me so in we walked. It is a dark, dark bar. Oddly enough, the decor was filled with everything of 'old western America'. Wagon wheels, tons of eagles all mixed with clever sayings about who frequented the establishment. The bartender asked us if we were for a couple, announcing that yes, we were in a gay bar. A great red glow covered the booths, while other corners appeared to be dimly lit. My boyfriend, so excited to take me there, only to be disappointed that he was the object of everyone's attentions. (I rather enjoyed it) The staff is very friendly, we still felt welcome as a couple. They even had mini bottles of Budweiser beer that I'd never seen before. We stayed for pint, enjoying the surroundings. It's not your over the top gay bar, but rather low key. They had a downstairs area but we didn't want to intrude. Perhaps they only expect men to come in for a pint but I didn't feel too out of place. It gave us a great story for my first visit to Northern England.

The sweet potato fries real let down as i am always excited to see them on a menu but this time they where just undercooked, the parmos where average and even though two parmos where ordered only one small garlic sauce provided (although im sure if we asked they would of gave us another) but we didnt finish the full meal to need a second. Over all id say the food is over priced for what we had comparing to local restaurants serving the same dish for £3-4 cheaper.
