It is no longer a heavy drinking pub but is getting good reviews for the Chinese restuarant part (which is being refurnished) The resturant is why I decided to give this place another try and I did enjoy it. We happened upon the place purely by chance when returning from a day out, and I am so glad we did as it is now one of our favourite places to eat! Many of the main meals would be enough to serve two people, especially some of the meat dishes, which are HUGE! Many of the meals have smaller portion sizes available, but to be fair these are still much bigger than you'd get in many other pubs. Even the children's portions are big! We have tried various dishes off the huge menu and all have been delicious; there is a quite a large vegetarian menu which pleased me; the mushroom stroganoff with pasta is lovely, and the puddings are gorgeous too! The prices are a little higher than many pub meals, but this is reflected in the portion sizes and the sheer quality of the food. I can't recommend this place high enough and am looking forward to returning there soon!

I have always been impressed with the service here; the staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is large, although I don't like the way that it is written on boards all around the room instead of on paper menus, as it feels like you're leaning over people who are having their meal just to see what food there is! We have some had lovely lunches there, it is really nice sitting in the small beer garden at the back looking out over the countryside on a sunny afternoon. The meals are not overly expensive, and although the portions aren't huge they are probably just right for most appetites. The pub is very popular and most people I know have dined there at some point; I've never heard a negative review of the place. Although I wouldn't say it is my favourite place to eat in the area, it's well worth a look.

The staff were very friendly and the service couldn't be beaten. We enjoyed ourselves so much we are going back on Wednesday to sample the Curry Night. The new owners of the Hamilton Russell are very pleasant and it is obvious they have a will to improve things. The place itself is recently refurbished and my only problem with it is its too large and too open by which I mean its like eating in a waiting room. Also there was no heating on and two of us were cold. The staff could be friendlier. The waitresses tended to plonk the food in front of you and basically not speak to you at all. The person on the till could be a little more welcoming. Generally a good meal but staff need some more training perhaps. Its maybe because they are young and unused to speaking to strangers! So nothing much wrong with the food but room for improvement. Why not give it a try.

We often start a night out at the Royal Oak as it is a good pub and a good place to catch up with friends, as the music is not too loud and there are plenty of places to sit. The toilets are upstairs so not ideal for disabled visitors! The drinks here do seem a little more expensive than most of the other pubs in the High Street. There is karaoke on a couple of times a week which does get very busy, and is always a good laugh. I've never eaten in the Royal Oak but I have heard other people say they've not been too impressed with the food, and I have also heard that it is becoming something of a gay bar, but in fairness Stockton no longer has any gay bars so why not? I would recommend the Royal Oak as a good place to meet friends before heading further into town for a night out.
