Although who decided to put carpet in a nightclub?? It's sticky, slimy and horrible. Some people walk in bare foot on it (eurgh!). Drinks are a decent price but considering its £6 in I think it's a bit of a rip off and they should subsidise drinks costs with the money they charge you to get in although I suppose it's how they make their money. Theirs music for everyone in 3 different rooms with various bars but you do still have to fight your way to the bar.

It really…read moreis an awesome place and one of the best nights out i have had without moving from venue to venue in ages. The building is gorgeous Victoriana music hall in style but each room is different. The main downstairs hall is ideal for gigs with a high stage and holds I would guess about 500 without any of the upstairs being open. the rest is a bit of a maze of stairways, bars, elegance, but with a indie crowd used to dingy places this was quite OTT. There was different DJs on each dancefloor on at least 3 levels of the building and other side rooms from what I can remember, with my favourite being the one on the 1st floor with a grandiose chandelier. The Saturday night shindig I went to is a regular thing and the people who went were a great mix of students and locals. The smoking area is on the street unfortunately, but I could not care less about that slight downside as it matched expectation and if after reading this I have just raised yours, then goodyou will enjoy it too my friends!

The Empire has been a place of worship for music lovers of the north for many years. It has many famous DJs performing to cater for every music genre - house, electro, techno, trance, retro and in more recent years has shown it can hold its own on the indie-rock scene. The recent rock and rave crossover means nights with erol alkan playing are now the norm - but there is something for everyone and anyone who likes to throw shapes to dance music (fridays) and indie (weds and sat - often live bands).

The pub it's self is spacious with plenty of seating and some pool tables. There is also a large dancefloor. The drinks are cheap and there are usually offers, such as 2 bottles for £3, as it is aimed at students and they also do a 'loyalty card' scheme whereby you can obtain certian discounts. Open 7 days a week, it used to be an old cinema and so the interior is huge with their being quite a big dancing area, a long bar with lots of staff on (so it doesn't take long to get served), a seating area overlooking the dance floor, a 'games' area (pool tables, itbox and side seating) and a group of tables wiht bar stools near the bar. The best night for the Crown has to be student night on a Monday. It costs £3 for entry with it being about £1.50 for pints and £1.25 for a spirit and soft drink mix. Shots are a pound. The music played is a mix of most modern or in the charts stuff and you can request songs if you climb the stairs to talk to the dj. The bouncers are quite friendly though the bar staff can be a bit grumpy at times (undertandable really with the nature of the job). Other nights the crown has is gay night and rock night that I know of. The only complaint I could have is it gets really crowded and it can be hard to grab a chance on the pool table. Generally though the music is good, prices are good and it's well worth a night out there!

I have been to this venue a few times and had very different experiences…read more On the first visit the place was pretty quiet. The bar man was very ignorant and we did not stay long enough to buy a drink. On my most recent visit (week day evening) the place certainly had more of a vibe going on. This is definately one for after work, rather than the weekend. Early on you can order food and sit down, with music gently playing in the background. As the evening progresses the tables get put away and what was a candle lit, relaxed eating area, turns into the dance floor. It got pretty busy the night we were there. They played a nice selection of music, even managing to dig out some Ragga from back in the day. Not a bad week night spot at all, though you do get quite a few tourists.
