The Cluny's a great venue…read more But, as there so often is, there's a but... The Cluny's a great venue but on this occasion the sound wasn't great. A worrying amount of feedback throughout Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra's album launch made for numerous mildly annoyed ears and some serious death glares from the band in the general direction of the sound man. Having said that, there might have been a problem with the equipment or instruments or cables, and when the sound was good, it did stay that way for a while. I once watched my sound engineer friend set up a ten piece ska band in the basement of a tapas restaurant. Just watching this made for a terribly stressful experience. At the end of the night, he was one giant bead of sweat. Rob Heron's band were on the larger side that night, with additional brass players. So I get that sometimes things might not go to plan. Regardless, it really didn't make the night any less enjoyable and we all agreed that we'd come back to the Cluny in a heartbeat and even love to play as a band. It's a great sized venue with a genuinely homegrown feel to it. From the posters strewn across the wall, it's clear that the Cluny is proud of its local music scene. With a kick-ass kitchen next door and what looked like a knock-'em-dead selection of beer, the Cluny is quite the place for music in Newcastle. Oh, and the floor bounces, YEAH.

But it got to around midnight, I went to the toilet then went to sit on the sofa for a bit to rest my legs, decided to get up about 10 minutes later to go get a drink from the bar then go back into the event room - they refused me an alcoholic drink of my choice, said I could have a half a shot with what I wanted because I'm "drunk" and they're looking out for me and others but also implied heavily that everyone was cut off from double shots. I explained that I'm not drunk and I actually have Cerebral Palsy, scoliosis and issues from a slipped disc a few years ago so I lose balance, need to sit and have to be careful with myself, so although I might seem drunk in a venue like that, it's purely on the basis that I'm disabled and look non disabled, and I can't help it. I was told I have to have a soft drink before I can order any alcohol again, I explained I hadn't had any alcohol since 10:30 (it was midnight at this point) and said I had 2 soft drinks in that time. They continued to say they're looking out for other people at the venue and that I'm a risk. The manager refused to acknowledge that she had said herself that everyone was cut off from doubles, even though it came from her mouth 10 minutes prior, and said that they've cut other people off - again I explained my disabilities and all I got was "I can't make you feel better about this, it's discretion". But I have been limping and looking "drunk" as they said, as I stepped into the place. Completely ruined the rest of my night because this implies that, even if you disclose your disabilities - which you shouldn't feel the need to. I booked two tickets for this as it's not an environment I'm usually in and I wanted to enjoy a night like this as it's unlikely I'll do it again, and was told I couldn't drink as I wished to even after explaining my personal circumstances across a bar where there was 4 or 5 other people there. Sometimes we just want to feel "normal" and shouldn't be put in the position of having to reveal my circumstances just so I can enjo my night, which even then they refused to do and refused to acknowledge it was wrong what they did, when I explained myself to them. I understand they have a job to do but if they were so concerned for my safety and others, security would have escorted me out. And they also said they refused to give me the alcohol I wished fo because I had just come from sitting down, so they said this implies I need a break from alcohol. The "manager" said they are disability trained but clearly it's not good enough considering most disability training is based on disabilities you can see, not hidden ones.

Another performer/patron review from me!…read more I love this place, the stage is great, part of the green dragon yard family, there's often use of the studios next door too. Little, but well stocked bar, which is, as ever with most of the north, pretty cheap. Loos are always clean, which is rare for a gig venue, lets be honest, and with it's little backstage area too. It does move drastically with the seasons, expect cold in the winter (until you're bouncing around) and hot in the summer. I've even been to a wedding reception here, they're always accommodating, see drama, live music and burlesque among others. About to have a refurb in the autumn to expand seating upstairs, and some lovely day time coffee odds and ends in the courtyard.
