I love this place. It has an excellent selection of house ales from The Village Brewery as well as an ever changing menu of English ale and imported lagers. The prices are towards the high end for Darlington but I pay them gladly for the quality of the produce and the service. I admit that this place will not to be some peoples taste but If you appreciate fine ale or wines then you should give the place a try. The average age of the clientele maybe around 50 but I've never felt out of place and am always afforded friendly service. Also the food here is usually very nice. The traditional beef sandwich and chips is delicious. The only reason I do not give 5 stars is that on Friday and Saturday evening the place is packed like a sardine tin and can attract a few pretentious idiots that seem to have given the place a bit of a reputation. For this reason I only use 22s as my mid-week haunt. read more

The staff are always friendly and it is a great place to unwind after a hard day at work or to visit when you want a busy night out. There are about fifty thousand types of beer and lager served at this pub and the staff are lovely!!!!! Obviously im joking. I walked in and was confronted with walls of blackboards, displaying names of countless obscure beers written in such indecipherable cursive that it reminded me of ancient sanskrit. How am I supposed to choose? I know I'll ask the staff! I approach the bar and the duty beer nerd greets me in his learnt middle class drawl. "Hoyyy man what can I get you" I ask him to reccomend something, innocently revealing my ignorance. He looks at me like he is teaching a child how to tie his shoes. Inside his head I can see he is rolling his eyes. "Have a white boar man" as he pumps out the beer. I pay him too much money and go to stand amongst the crowd. The clientele are loud, bolshy and middle class. Overheard conversation relates to immigration and the inability to buy a second home in Cornwall. Yaaaaawn. This storm of pretension envelops me to the point where I find myself comparing corduroy trousers on my phone. But then I was struck with a bolt of clarity. I understood the owners vision! He didnt want to create a pub at all. He wanted a private school filled with posh teachers pointing at blackboards and talking down to the ignorant. I like this bar - true it is more of an older crowd in here and if your out with a large group of friends looking for loud music and a wild night out then this wont be included in your plans. Its a nice bar with quality wines/real ales/lagers. Its a kind of place you would go to with your OH for a relaxing drink or if you have been for a meal nearby and want a drink - you know it will be trouble free. There is always plenty of barstaff waiting to serve you so you dont wait too long even on a Friday and Saturday. Theres always a few poeple in there drinking regardless what day it is and it has a nice atmosphere. read more

Number 22 is a busy pub with a more mature crowd, located just on the very edge of Darliginton town centre. The location is particularly good as it is near other bars and restaurants. It offers a large selection of wine and real ales. The prices are average. read more

Its so nice to find a pub where the landlord has made such an effort. The best beer, wines and good food at very reasonable prices. I drink White Boar beer. Its perfect. On Saturday I had lunch there - beef baguette and fries. Fantastic at £6. No. 22 is possibly the best pub I have been in. Suits the more mature but there are usually a few young ones in there. read more

Four stars for this one.. I do like this pub and the range of beers to try out is great.. Strawberry timmermans when I'm feeling flush.. But when I walk in I can't help but think I'm being judged upon appearance. I have a shaved head and don't dress like the typical 22s drinker.. But then it may just be me.. Nice place to go early on I think as I'm not lavishly paid so it's 4 drinks then off to tanners for a culture shock.. :) read more

Number 22 is definitely targetting the more discerning and mature customer. As other reviewers have mentioned it has a good range of ales and wines but if either of these are not your tipple then you are somewhat restricted as they do not sell spirits. If you are looking for somewhere to pop for a drink before or after a meal then this may be a good place but I couldn't spend a whole evening in here. It can also be hard to get a seat on a weekend. read more

A great pub selling a tremendous range of real ales. The place always has a good atmosphere and the staff are always helpful and pleasant. Number 22 serves food at lunchtimes which is always beautifully presented. We take all our visitors here and they always enjoy it as much as we do. read more

This bar is more aimed for the older generation, The largers are not the usual choices and they do not sell shorts. the staff are very friendly and the dervice is very good. It is located in the centre of Darlington and is in close vicinity of other pubs. read more

I agree with the previous review. Found the staff unhelpful and unaccommodating. Very little seating available for paying customers however there was ample empty seats for 'reserved' customers that never seemed to put in an appearance! Staff were quite rude when we politely requested two extra chairs. The bar was extremely full although the management frown upon moderate noise?! Will not be returning! I like to chat when having a drink with friends not communicate through sign language! read more

Unfortunately our experience at Number 22s was unpleasant at best. It appears that the owner of this establishment dislikes large groups of people turning up unexpectedly (14) and spending large amounts of money on rounds of drinks. The owner and staff discourage you from sitting down and prefer you to stand. Should you try and move a chair which is currently unoccupied, you will be faced with irritation and annoyance and subsequently be asked to return said chair to its original location. The chair will then remain unoccupied for the next three to four hours. Also, if you plan on sharing a joke and laughing with your colleagues, this is also frowned upon. Should the noise level rise beyond 60db, staff will become disgruntled. You should expect a phone call from the manager the following day to confirm the rule break, explaining that the laughter from your party was too loud. This is despite the fact that the pub is incredibly busy and EVERYBODY is talking, laughing and having fun (yes fun). As a result of our experience at Number 22s, my colleagues and I will not be returning. As an aside, I strongly suggest that the owner of the pub has a long, hard think about their current career choice. Perhaps they would be more suited to somewhere a little more tranquil, like a library or aquarium. Avoid. read more
