We had the pleasure of talking with the grandson and his wife, who now run the business. They were incredibly sweet, welcoming, and genuinely happy to answer questions and help us pick out products. We brought home a jar of their extra hot green salsa, and wow...it is absolutely incredible. It has a serious kick, but the heat never overpowers the flavor. You can actually taste the fresh Hatch chiles instead of just burning your mouth. It's hands down one of the best salsas I've had. Supporting a third generation family business while taking home an authentic taste of Hatch made this one of our favorite stops in New Mexico. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area.

You already know I had to pull over! From the moment I walked into Bowlin's Aleka Flats, the staff greeted me with genuine warmth. The store itself is such a fun place to browse--filled with unique Southwestern treasures like shirts, ponchos, serapes, moccasins, souvenirs, and so much more. Even if you only come for the cookies, you'll probably end up wandering the aisles for a bit. Speaking of cookies... I could see the staff constantly rotating fresh batches, so I knew they weren't sitting around getting stale. I also appreciated that they offered options with and without nuts. We ended up grabbing a dozen because, let's be honest, the price made it an easy decision. Individual cookies are just $0.99 each, but a dozen is only $9. We picked up six original chocolate chip, three sugar pecan, and three chocolate chip pecan cookies. One thing that stood out was watching the employee preparing the cookies while wearing gloves. It's a small detail, but it shows they take pride in food handling and cleanliness, and I always notice those things. The staff was incredibly friendly and even thanked me for stopping by... even though cookies were literally the only reason I came in. And yes, I'm on a road trip, so don't judge me! My kiddos thanked me the second they took their first bite, and that was all the confirmation I needed. These cookies were soft, chewy, fresh, and absolutely worth the stop. They grow a lot of chillies out here and the first time I heard about Hatch, NM was when I was at a farmers market in Santa Fe NM. I stopped in here today to check out their goods and they have a lot to offer! When you walk in, you will immediately smell all the wonderful aromas of chillies! They have lots of different kinds of chillies for sale here. They have frozen green chillies in the back, and also red pepper flakes, dried red chillies, chipotle, canned salsa, dried pecans and more chillies! They also have many imported goods from Mexico here and saw all sorts of housewares on sale here. You can get Mexican style tiles here, aprons, all sorts of ceramics, mortar and pestle, ristras, clothes, purses, hats. I opted to get a Hatch NM T-shirt, a pretty badass cowboy hat with a raptor attacking a snake image on the front, some dried chipotle and some dried mangos with chamoy and chili. The dried mangoes are delicious, tart, sweet and spicy! Definitely stop into this place if you're passing thru Hatch NM, lots of gifts and products to choose from!
