WARNING & BEWARE!! Please be aware that Martell's imposes fees on any credit card purchases without your knowledge. Everytime I shop I need to ask for a receipt, and a couple of times, it felt like they charged me a higher amount than quoted. Recently, I decided to take note. Again, they were hesitant to provide a receipt, but gave me one. It was higher than what they quoted me. I asked about it, they said it was credit card fees. I asked why they didn't tell me and also asked what the % was, and they had not idea. When I told them it was deceptive, he just shrugged his shoulders. Just to make sure, as soon as I got home, I googled if it was legal or not, because if it is "oh well" but if it's deceptive and against law, then I wanted to make a complaint. It is INDEED illegal. Here is the Civil Code. Under California's Civil Code § 1748.1, merchants are prohibited from imposing surcharges on credit card payments unless they clearly disclose these fees. Additionally, the Honest Pricing Law (SB 478), effective July 1, 2024, mandates that businesses include all mandatory fees in the advertised price, except for government-imposed taxes and shipping costs. Failure to disclose credit card fees may constitute a violation of these laws.​ I will be filing a complaint so they can be investigated. In addition, per other reviews, they are not very friendly and quite rude. Zero stars. This place should be out of business for the way they treat customers (women in particular). Not to mention the stench! I have regrettably gone in here multiple times and received the same treatment each time. The person behind the counter doesn't seem to know what products are carried in the store and doesn't know what bourbon is. I walked around the store looking for bitters before going up to the counter to ask if he had any. He grunted back "huh? bitters?" as though he had never heard the word and proceeded to point to a direction i just came from. I walked back and when i knew i wasn't going to find them there, i googled them so i could show him a photo. Once i showed the photo, he zoomed in and said "oh, yeah" and found them behind the counter, directly behind where he has been standing presumably all day. I then said, "which bourbon's do you have?" because they were hidden behind the counter in an area that couldn't be seen from the counter, to which he grunted again "huh?" so i continued to repeat "bourbon? you know, bourbon whisky?" and he said with a scowl "what kind is it though, vodka, rum?" and i said again "BOURBON!! WHISKEY!!!" finally he understood. I'm fairly certain he also overcharged me, but in my hurried rage to get out of there, i mistakenly didn't ask for a receipt. i will not return and i will do my best to save anyone else from going there. read more

This rating is not based on the business itself, but of the character and quality of the owner/employees. This will sound like a made up story, but I can assure you that - unfortunately - it is real. Today, my father was standing outside of this business with my dog. A male employee walked outside with a metal water bowl to give to my dog (which is a nice gesture). However, when this person reached down to touch the top of my dog's head, my dog put his tail between his legs and leaned back away from the man's hands. Any true dog lover and owner knows that dogs hate when anyone - especially a stranger- reaches over their head to touch them. In response to my dog's reaction, this person said to my dad "Obviously this dog is abused" in an accusatory tone. When my dad said "I assure you this dog is not abused," the man yelled at him and said "Shut up and listen to me!" He proceeded to throw the water from the bowl on the ground next to my dog and stomped back inside, leaving my father astonished and shocked on the sidewalk. I think it is disgusting and shameful that a business would conduct themselves this way. My dog is an anxious rescue, and quite frankly people shouldn't just assume they can pet any dog they want. Just because a dog doesn't want to be pet by an individual, does not mean that they are abused by their owners. I am shocked that an employee, or owner, of a business would be so callous and cruel to make unfounded comments toward a complete stranger. Obviously this person was pretending to be a "dog lover" without really knowing how dogs behave at all. Hadn't walked in here for nearly two years after living only a block away. That came to an end when it was the closest place to get in on lotto tickets for the $650 million jackpot for mega millions. Started off with that and I found myself buying hot pockets to stock up for dinner. It is now my go to place for lotto tickets. They have a lot of liquor and beer in here. And funny photos and captions if you are caught stealing there. Give this locally owned store some business! read more

While the store is not the cleanest, they do manage to get it done. This is my convenience store in the morning. I give them special props for having stuff an ordinary convenience store doesn't have - packaging tape, eggs & bacon, huge selection of vitamin water, big freezer of Hagen Daaz, etc. The prices are always more than reasonable. I especially like to grab one of the $1.25 muffins when I have a few minutes to spare at the bus stop. As others have mentioned, this is a also a good liquor / beer hookup. read more

Martell's Liquor has been sucessfully catering and pandering to my ever-changing liquor whims since I moved to this neighborhood a few years ago. Always friendly and professional, they have a really wide selection of liquor and wine, as well as my preferred cigarettes while I'm off the wagon. They have more selection in general than other liquor stores nearby, and is even slightly cheaper than Blackwell's across the street (edit 4/5/08 - depending on what you get). They're also open later than other stores as I've stumbled in there many a time as late as 12:30am because I just drank the last of the fernet and need more like NOW. Also, one of the cashiers there will occaisionally hum and sing to himself, and who doesn't like being entertained while purchasing liquor? read more

A bag of Funyuns larger than a "grab bag"? Not here. Want Twinkies? They usually don't have 'em. Fig Newtons? Nope. Sour straws? If you're lucky. BE CAREFUL IF THEY SAY YOUR CARD DIDNT WORK AFTER FIRST SWIPE! Came here for a routine snack purchase. First credit card swipe, she gave back to me and then I'm not sure what she saw on her little machine but she asked to try again (no biggie maybe bad swipe, happens). Swiped again, she complains it didn't work still. I take out my debit card thinking maybe they're having issues with credit card. Enter my pin and she says it's still having problems... Since there's a Chase just down the block I offer to just get cash. Come back, pay then a few days later I check my credit / debit statements and see that all attempts she tried before I paid cash POSTED. To make matters worst I don't think she even gave me a receipt after all that. Ended up paying $56 for what was supposed to be $14. Don't trust this place with cards, pay cash. read more

The best thing about this place is the ice cream selection and on the registers they post pictures of people who have shoplifted. I recognized a guy who I trained at one of my jobs. He stole a DVD out of a porn mag! I would give them five stars but I bought a lighter here recently and didn't bother to flic it at the register. I moved to the Outer Richmond nearly a year ago, one block from this corner store. We discovered Martell's and slowly started going there every day. First just for booze but then more just for food and snacks. They have literally everything. Corn Nuts, fine wine, even hardcore porn. What's great about Martell's isn't just what they sell but the people who work there. There's Austin and Angela (the owners, I think?). There's Omi, super buff and always wisecracking. Then there's Mike Lee, who always has a joke and hooks it up with a discount if you pay cash. For some reason they're all obsessed with soap operas. If you can pull them away from that tiny T.V. behind the counter long enough to ring you up they're the kindest, warmest people imaginable. Love this store, it's become a staple in my life. A very angry Asian man behind the counter. I asked for a bottle of Sauza and he screamed "what" at me. The phone rings, he answers it. I tell him Sauza again. He knocks three bottles down trying to get it while talking on his phone. He then rings up the Sauza as listed, but charges me $5 for a litter of club soda and 3 limes. I ask for a bag, he doesnt hear because he is still talking on the phone. I swipe my card and ask for a bag again, he doesnt hear. He totals it out as he hangs up the phone. I tell him I ask for a bag he litterly screams "No Bag! I didnt ring you up for one". I tell him I asked him twice but he didnt hear because he was on the phone, Again, he yells "That was a very important customer, what do you want me to do!" So I ask him "So we are not important customers?" He screams back "NO MORE! You're very rude". I tell him he is the rude one and we leave. This place only stays in business because there is no competition around them. Update: There is a wine store across the street that has a better imported beer and liquor selection. Blackwells. Martell's has been around for decades and it's no wonder why. This is as good as a liquor store gets. The staff is super patient and friendly. They're always well-stocked and have a variety of microbrews and liquors. It's nice to know that there's a place that's open late where you can grab a trusty local brew or try something new. read more

I would give it zero stars. I refuse to go in there on principle. Back in 2005, I bought a $20 phone card from the Korean guy that owns this dump. I tried to use the card but it was expired. I went back there and he REFUSED to refund me. Total sketchy person. I told him that I would never return there and never has. He's a rude and lacking in character. DO NOT GO TO THIS STORE. I absolutely refuse to go to this store. The owner is corrupt and will literally charge you whatever he feels like charging you. While the workers at night are ok and will not rip you off, the owner who's there during the day will rip you off and make you pay ridiculous amounts of money. Like $4-5 for a single bottle of soda. Lived in the Richmond for a couple of years and frequented this place late night for snacks, booze, smokes, and the occasional lotto ticket. I no longer live out there but still drop-in when I'm nearby. I get it, when you have a captive audience, the laws of supply and demand dictate that you have a far greater latitude when it comes to setting prices, than you would in a non-captive environment. The fact that they are the only mini mart that stays open till the wee hours of the morning in 5 or so blocks in either direction, affords them this captive audience. That being said, charging over $11 for a 6 pack that should be priced at no more than $9.50 is really annoying. I feel like I might be ok with it if the owners were nice people, or even if they pretended poorly to be nice people. In reality, there is no two ways about it. They are going to grossly overcharge you, and they aren't gonna smile, or even say "thank you" 9 in 10 times. Because of their proximity, it's unlikely that I would be able to swear them off completely, but part of me longs for the day I move, because that is the day that I will never have to see this place again.
