We had the worst experience coming back from the Mercedes Benz Stadium. Got on the train one stop Westbound, changed trains to go North only to find out a few stops later it was going NE. There was not a single train North. We had to order an Uber. From the time we left the stadium to the time we got home was 2hours later. Who knows how long it would have been if we didn't switch Uber. There was no announcements about the train or where it was or how long it was going to be. Worst nightmare ever. read more

Coming back from Atlanta, I have plenty of reviews of the places I saw. This will include the MARTA. Besides, I did finally get a chance to ride this infamous subway system that is the butt of a-many jokes. How could I not ride this considering my interest in using public transportation? MARTA stands for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, and covers the mass transit network across the Atlanta region. I tried the subway, and while it is incomparable to the New York City subway, or even the Washington Metro, it does the job quite adequately. Does it need more stops? Yes. Does it need express runs? Yes. But let us not fully trash this system. It is extremely affordable and gets you to where you need to be without all the hassles of the typical Atlanta traffic, which I got to see for myself, can be pretty bad at times. I guess I wish it would go out a bit further, and run more frequently. This is the problem with these so-called, second generation subway systems. They were built without the forethought and the love that systems in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston had in mind. Those systems were created before the rise of the automobile, so therefore they were more extensive. Look at the newer systems, and you will see a difference. But overall I cannot truly complain about the system. As long as you act accordingly, and do not do anything stupid, I think it merits some respect for what it is. read more

When I'm planning to be a tourist somewhere, I specifically choose cities with public transport that goes from the airport to downtown. I don't want to deal with renting cars and parking. Amsterdam, Boston, Cleveland, Dallas, Istanbul, Rome, Tokyo and Washington to name a few. I want a system that's easy to navigate and takes me where I want to go. MARTA gets the job done with trains that go from the airport in the south to North Springs in the north, which is outside the 485 perimeter. The green line from Bankhead (not Buckhead) to Edgewood and the blue line from Holmes to Indian Creek (on the perimeter). It certainly gets the job done. I've enjoyed a distinct lack of urine smell on board the trains and in the stations I've visited. Lights could be brighter, but cell coverage underground is great. I've heard stories of people being hassled by robbers and so it's pleasant to see security and cameras on the trains. Of course, MARTA is weapons free so they know that the law abiding citizens won't be armed. Sad, really. read more

Martha left me and hundreds of other passengers stranded at King Memorial Station. The train just stop service kicks everybody off and leaves. Everybody stranded for the next train which took longer than 20 minutes. Why do they even stop transit when they're supposed to be two other stops on the green line, technically. They also don't stack trains for sports or concert events which force hundreds and thousands of people to cram and into the trains which is very unsafe . Why can't they have trains running every 10 or even less amount of time on major event days? Do stupid people really run Marta because it certainly seems so. read more

MARTA is a great way to get to and from the Atlanta airport. If I don't have a ride and I'm traveling lightly, it's my preferred choice. From my station (Arts Center), it's a zippy 25-minute ride to the airport. There are 11 stops in-between, but because I'm already on the north-south line, I don't have to switch trains. The train unloads directly inside the airport, so I don't have to deal with parking or traffic. Since the airport is the last stop south, trains originating from the airport are mostly empty. It's a bargain for only $2.50 each way. MARTA trains are $2.50 one way no matter how far you go. If you've never taken MARTA before, you'll have to pay $1.00 extra for a Breeze Card, which is a card you can load MARTA trips onto. Breeze Cards are proximity cards. You just tap and go. Convenient. So I've been as far south as Airport station and as far north as Lenox station (Lenox Square Mall). Other than the airport, I've most commonly taken MARTA to get to Philips Arena and the Georgia Dome (Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center station) and Dragon*Con (Peachtree Center station), though I'm using it less and less these days as I find better parking spots for these venues/events. My freshman year at Tech, North Avenue station was my starting point. I wouldn't use MARTA for an Atlanta Hawks game, but I would consider using it for a bigger event such as the NCAA Final Four (Atlanta hosted in 2002 and 2007 and will host again in 2013), Chick-fil-A Bowl, or something that might be going on at Centennial Olympic Park. Many people use MARTA for sporting events and quite frankly, the total time it takes to get home taking MARTA from a sporting event is probably the same as (or longer than) driving. The walkway that leads from the Georgia Dome to MARTA is so congested that there are points along the walkway that tell you how much longer you have to wait in line until you reach the trains (e.g. "45 minutes from this point," "30 minutes from this point," etc.). Not to mention you're going to be packed in like sardines once you finally get to the trains. MARTA isn't nearly as bad for Dragon*Con, except for maybe the Saturday morning of, for the annual parade down Peachtree Street. Other than for the above reasons, I really have no other use for MARTA. Atlanta is a sprawling city and the type of town where you really need a car. As far as cleanliness goes, I think MARTA trains are relatively clean for public transportation. It's all hard surfaces, no upholstery, so it's easier to keep clean. I've seen much worse in other cities. Some people have safety concerns about MARTA. I usually take MARTA during the day and/or for special events when there are more people than usual riding the trains, so I've never had any problems. I've definitely seen my fair share of crazies, but no one as crazy as Soulja Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXz-tlK2pkI, haha). I have had some racial slurs hurled at me at the Five Points and North Avenue stations. Some stations are worse than others and you may have to deal with a panhandler or two. I've only seen MARTA security personnel (either on the trains or in the stations) twice in all my trips. I think the trains are mostly reliable and comfortable, but I wouldn't rely on MARTA if I'm trying to get somewhere in a hurry. I have recently started taking MARTA to and from work, which is great. The convenience is great and it is very cost effective. The lack of patrol on the cars is disturbing. I see more patrol officers at the Five Points station than I used to on the cars. If they can provide more patrol on the cars to prevent those listening to their music at high volume levels without headphones and individuals having loud, boisterous conversations with themselves could improve the riding experience. The Avondale station, in particular, could really use more patrol in the parking lot to prevent people from taking up two parking spaces in the upper lot and possibly re-striping the lot so that people who obviously can't drive can visibly see the lines to designate a parking space so that they don't take two spaces for a Nissan Versa or Toyota Corrolla. read more

I see a lot of reviews for Marta that speaks to how dirty the trains and busses are, the lack of police there are on trains and at stations, along with the homeless and other mentally ill individuals that ride Marta, and the reason that the Marta experience is a nightmare is simply because Marta treats it's employees like garbage. Marta is one of the worst places to work for. Why do I say that? because I have several friends that work there and they all talk about how horrible Marta management is to them. The bus drivers can't even get reasonable breaks, they have to basically eat while driving or take a quick five seconds when no one is on and shove their food down their throats. I don't even think they're able to taste what they've just eaten. One of my friends use to drive trains for them. He had a perfect record until his train struck an individual who jumped out on the tracks. He followed all the Marta procedures and after all was said and done, They acted as though they we're giving him a raise and promotion moving him to management. It now appears that they did it because as management he was no longer under the protection of the union. Two months later they fire him for something silly and foolish. Road rail from the Airport to Peachtree Center this past Saturday and back on Monday. Ride in was a bit full. Entire hood got on at College Park. Might have gotten a small contact high from all the weed smell wafting thtough the train car. No real issues. Everything was old. Stations need a serious power wash and/or upgrade. All was functioning during my trips. Paid cash at machines for 1 way trips. Return to airport on Monday was less crowded and less stank. Overall, would ride again. Cheap and easy. Might take some handy wipes next time and wipe down the seat. read more

I've been riding Marta route (125) for about 1 month now. The bus drivers on route 125, dont speak, after you've spoken. they do not acknowledge you when you walk on the bus. Also, Instead of telling you that the fare machine doesn't work they just cover the machine with their right hand while looking out the left window. the job can't be that hard and if speaking to your passengers as they get on the bus is such a hard task then why work with the general public. I'm new to this whole yelp reviewing thing but I'm gonna make this as brief as I can. Marta is literal DOG WATER. You can't get on the train without your nose being assaulted by the smell of piss or being harassed by some homeless junkie or some scammer trying to sell you "free health insurance" (real examples by the way). Unfortunately I have no choice but to take Marta until I have enough saved up for a car but I can't even count on 2 hands how many times I've been stranded waiting on buses that are either late or won't show up at all. I've lost 2 jobs because of Marta's bullshit one of which was on my first day because they take ages to leave the station because they wanna stop and socialize. The employees constantly wear a sour face and always have an attitude like come on I understood they're not being paid enough but that's no reason to inconvenience people who pay to use the service. They always stop mid bus route to buy lunch or smoke a cigarette while there are people on board who literally have somewhere to be and if you're on a train be prepared to be randomly kicked off and the train to go out of service and don't expect to get answers as to why from the driver because they will give you nothing but attitude. I'm starting to believe they do this on purpose because they realize that it's a felony for me to smack them to another area code. I would rather walk across broken glass with no shoes than take one of those buses or trains. I pray for the day I have my car because once I do I'm gonna drop my breeze card in the blender and throw a party because I hate Marta with a burning passion. I was on my way to work this morning Friday 08/12/2022 on the 78 6:30 am and the bus driver look in his twenty's went beyond is job this morning. That bus he was driving shouldn't even be on the road but he made it work . The bus just kept cutting off , and every time he would wait and crank it up and keep moving . We thought at any time we would be unloading waiting on the next bus but he didn't complain or give up he just kept fighting with it and we made it to the eastpoint train station. My recent experiences about Martas bus drivers, the majority of them seem to be be customer UNFRIENDLY. When you speak to them they just sit there with a blank stare. The new breed of former school bus drivers cannot drive. Most of them have mastered the art of hitting the brake hard a great deal for some reason. A lot of them have driven past stops a great deal, especially routes 5 and 110. The buses are much smaller these days and sometimes are over crowded. They recently debuted their new Breeze mobile 2.0 app (successor to breeze mobile) for buying tickets on the go. Typical for MARTA to spend time and innovation into perfecting an app that's designed to take payments. Because no other aspect of this joke of a transportation service has improved at ALL. They still can't keep a staff, they refuse to pay their existing staff which is why they cannot be consistent with their services because they don't care enough to pay people a living wage and then only make excuses for why their service is such rotting garbage. Their real time tracker as well as their scheduling information is outdated, incorrect, or just not even there. Their call center brigade is useless and even less informed than their own app, which is totally queer. They swear up and down they have these magnificent plans for the future but they can't even get their buses to be on time if they arrive at all. If there's not a bus cancelling there's a bus that has broken down and cannot be used. Because they do not maintain their equipment and instead give bonuses and pay raises to the board and CEO rather than maintaining a safe and reliable transportation service. Do not rely on MARTA after the 6pm hour. Their buses will cancel on you and they will leave you to stand out in the weather and dangerous conditions for hours on end while they decide when they want to send another bus on the route. I was robbed standing at a MARTA bus stop and was almost killed by the armed robber and no one was around because MARTA did not send a bus and they left me to fend for myself at an empty bus stop in a dangerous location because they were too lazy to do their jobs and I couldn't even reach anyone to tell them my situation because their customer service center was closed and the police line they swear can be used for emergencies could not be reached. This app has done nothing but further highlight the many issues and administrative overlooks plaguing this company and it's unfortunate customers daily. Every single day. It won't change, it won't improve, it won't get better. This is MARTA. Unreliable, apathetic, and HIGHLY disorganized and dishonest. Just waiting for my transportation situation to get straight, then I will cut up my breeze card and file a massive lawsuit against MARTA and call on the DOT to investigate the obvious malpractice that's been going on with this bus service since it's inception I'm pretty sure. read more

Being from Atlanta, I can truly say marta has gotten worse over the years..Even with them hiring in the last few years..claims of understaffed..causing some busses to not show up..especially at night..That stupid too early rule they got..but they can be late as hell!..and now as I sit waiting for this bus to now have to get permission from a supervisor to re route cause of a police emergency..while I rode with plenty of drivers that didn't have to wait for permission...they just took a different route..I've even had to help them on those different routes..They maybe making changes but it's brings more problems..So I have found myself at times calling lyft behind this mess. read more

Marta is convenient to use to get to certain areas of ATL. If you need to go to Gwinnett county, that's a whole other ball game. It will take you hours to get to certain parts of Gwinnett not the whole area. There is one particular lady that drives the 121 bus in Stone Mountain at 751am scheduled time. She is rude and has been rude since I started riding the bus. Her energy is off putting. She rides bus number 1605. She is selective with who she says good morning too. Her demeanor is mean like someone forgot to get their cup of coffee in the morning. Just her presence seeing her makes the energy in my body drained and feeled with frustration and slight angry. The MARTA Bus Drivers are the greatest! I have no idea what they are being paid, but whatever they are paid, it is not enough. How about a starting wage (after training) of $30 per hour with a 30-hour week being full time? What do the bus drivers think about that? $900 per week would be about $45,000 per year. Would that be a wage sufficient to support a comfortable life? Riders need more frequent service, and that means more bus drivers. A couple months ago, I went to the College Football game between Jackson State and North Carolina Central for a school trip. It was about 30 of us and the Marta was the best option for us(even carpooling was an uncomfortable decision because of gas prices as well as carbon emissions). The Marta ended up being cleaner than I thought, and easier to navigate. Our team might've lost, but overall, MARTA was definitely the best option, environmentally and financially!! The quote, "No man ever steps in the same river twice" pretty much sums up my experience riding MARTA over the past decade. It's never the same and that's what makes it interesting. You never know what you'll see on the way from A to B...people watching at its best. Entertainment value aside, your experience will vary depending on whether you're a tourist or a resident. FOR TOURISTS MARTA can be pretty useful. It's an inexpensive and convenient way to get from the airport to your hotel if you're staying in the downtown/ Midtown/ Buckhead/ Perimeter Mall areas. Most of us can't get to our favorite grocery or retail stores, restaurants/bars, banks, gyms or nightlife via MARTA. I'd definitely ride more than a few times a year if it took me places I wanted to go. The 30-day unlimited pass offers limitless rides for $95 per month...or under $1,150 per year. That's WAY less than the cost of car ownership when you factor in things like registration, gas, insurance, and maintenance costs. At that rate I'd have to consider exclusive ridership since that would easily save me thousands every year in transportation costs. Hopefully one day they will finally expand the existing rail lines in all directions and add more stations. Or increase economic incentives for many more businesses to relocate within walking distance of the train stations. Either improvement would make MARTA much more resident-friendly. In a nutshell, I like the MARTA. I think its convenient, well managed, and relatively clean compared to other subway / train stations I've seen in various cities. Metropolitan Atlanta is getting so large that the MARTA is a necessity and "greener" for our rapidly changing environment. I have friends that enjoy taking the MARTA instead of driving their car. It supposedly gives them an excuse to drink and go home sloshed without having to rely on a designated driver (kind of like NYC actually). Plus I hear its very convenient for going to the airport, which makes total sense. I hope they have converted most of the stations from that crazy token system to the more updated card system. When I last took the MARTA 2 years ago, I was already impressed with the clean cars and the CNN televisions in each one. I wish there were more routes to take around Atlanta and it's too bad the hours are limited to before midnight. Like most other cities, the MARTA was home to plenty of crazies and homeless with personalities as exuberant as those in NY. read more
