Trains are filthy with trash rolling around on the floors and on the seats. It smells bad. Verbal altercation between two riders before we made it to the first stop. For Atlanta being a prominent city, this public infrastructure is an embarrassment. Clean this up for your community members!

It's a great service but the trains need to be respected and kept clean. Get serious, be proud Marta management, keep your trains and stations clean. It's not a place for the homeless to sleep and use as urinals. The stench and dirt are unacceptable.

I decided to take the MARTA train from the airport to midtown Atlanta in November 2023 during a 3-day conference. Here's a summary of the good, the bad, and the ugly on using MARTA for out-of-town visitors. THE GOOD: It's a super-convenient way to get from the airport (the train station is a short walk from the baggage claim) to downtown or midtown Atlanta. You can take either the gold or red line trains northbound. Second, it's really inexpensive ($2.50 per ride) compared to an Uber/Lyft. You can also buy a Breeze card ($2) and a multi-day pass which is convenient if you plan to take at least 2 trips per day. After visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park area, I tried the streetcar which provided a clean and comfortable way to return to Peachtree Center. THE BAD: The signs with the name of each station were faded and difficult to read in many locations. Also, the interior of the train was filthy on a Saturday afternoon with garbage. The downtown stations (Peachtree Center) could use a clean scrubbing and "refresh" especially since they are used by tourists visiting the attractions near Centennial Park and conference folks using the GWCC center. It would make MARTA more appealing for visitors. THE UGLY: On the Saturday train, it was overcrowded at College Park and I had the pleasure of listening to a woman yelling profanities on a cell phone in what appeared to be a domestic violence dispute. While I did not feel unsafe at 4pm on a Saturday, I don't think I would want my kids exposed to such language. MARTA could provide "ambassadors" in a few downtown stations; or they could ride select trains to enforce rules. Installing cameras (used in the St. Louis and Philadelphia transit systems) might help with MARTA as well.

Is the red line safe to take from the airport?

There are hourly death-ray battles. The trains are infested with radioactive anacondas. Odd-numbered cars are reserved for zombies and meth addicts. They film those Japanese grope-porn videos from 7:30-8:30 a.m. between airport and Lindbergh. But,… Read more

When we first got off the train, we didn't look at the signs and just exited to the street so we ended up walking a lot more the first day but once you realize all the demarcations, you'll be fine. We actually found an exit closer to our hotel, without having to walk up hill. SCORE!!! The station looks clean and feels pretty safe. I agree that it's a bit dark but I kind of think it adds to the charm a bit. I love the monitors that let you know when the next train is coming. The escalators are interesting to say the least. They do take forever but they are very long and better than having to walk up 4 flights of stairs, especially with baggage. And once we found the exit that didn't involve a hill, the escalator in that area was a bit shorter.

There were a lot of people wandering by the exit asking for money. There was also a wandering street lunatic who seemed potentially dangerous. Don't linger around the exit. My earlier experience was confusing, mostly due to the machine's UI.

Because of this, it's the busiest train station, based on entries and exits, in the MARTA system. Employees try to keep this station clean, but with so many train riders passing through, the station is sometimes dirty. I personally have been in this station only to transfer to another train going in a different direction, and have never physically entered or exited the station using the gates. In this station, the north/south trains of the Red line and the north-east/south trains of the Gold line run on the tracks in the lower level. The east/west trains of the Green and the Blue lines run on the tracks in the upper level. Multiple escalators, stairways and elevators allow MARTA customers to move from one level to the other. Just a word of caution: If you're slow moving and you're transferring to another level, wait until most of the crowd gets ahead of you. Otherwise, you may get pushed and jostled by people hurrying to get by you. This is especially true if you're transferring to another train either before or after an event at either State Farm Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium or Georgia World Congress Center. Signage is accurate and helpful, but you have to know in which direction you want to travel to prevent confusion. Electronic signs in the stations let riders know the approximate remaining wait times for the arriving trains. A PA announcement lets everyone in the station which train is arriving. Both levels in this station are well lit, and there are few concrete benches to sit on while waiting for trains to arrive. Just like in every train station, MARTA customers need to ensure their safety by being aware of their surroundings and not stand too close to the train tracks.
