It's small and quaint market but is filled with treasures for everyone. We opted to just pick up items for later use as we love buying locally sourced. The customer service was superb. We were heading out Edisto way to Kings Market to take our grandson for his first strawberry picking adventure and low and behold, we see the Geechie Mill. Of course we have to pull in so I can shop. Picked up 2 types of grits and some rice for one of my sons. Made those fresh grits for my grandson the next morning and he was a HUGE fan. I could not shovel it in fast enough. So this is what was once known as Geechie Boy, which has changed names to "Marsh Hen Mill", for what reason I was not entirely clear on. In any case, what you'll see here is a small roadside shop with some premium expensive grains and beans, as well as a few other farmer's market type preserved and frozen things. There's a lot of hot sauce. I stopped in because I usually get the grits in prepared form at Gnome Cafe but missed that on this trip. There was plenty here to be worth indulging in. This brand can be found in Whole Foods and other places, so the value of buying it here is somewhat marginal, but it's always nice to support the source and stopping here breaks up the drive to the beach. read more

If coming into Edisto Island, and looking for either a unique gift or some provisions you can't get anywhere else, I can highly recommend stopping into the Marsh Hen Mill. The small shop offers a number of items from their girts and grains, spice blends, candles, hats & shirts, sauces, and more. As a mill, you should absolutely grab one of their grains as they have some options you won't find anywhere else. While the White or Yellow grits might be common, the rarer stuff that I have only ever found here include their Sea Island Blue and Unicorn, and their Guinea Flint and Jimmy Red offer some change from the standard as well. Also for every flavor of grit they offer a flavor of cornmeal - make sure you read which bag is which, though the helpful staff will also check for you. Now for grains they offer bags of ancient grains like Farro and Freekeh, legumes like Red and Black-Eyed Peas, and a few options of Rice, where I had to get a bag of the Carolina Gold. I also considered getting a bag of their Indigo popcorn. You also should check out their jam selection. While they have some standards like Strawberry and Apple Butter, we did grab a jar of their Traffic Jam, featuring peaches, strawberries, cherries, red raspberries, and cranberries. The co-owner who was manning the register while we were there was incredibly helpful and pointed out they offer a lot of recipes on their website, so if you have questions about how to cook something, head on over to there. Likewise, the website offers shipping, and they are starting to get in local grocery chains, so if you live in the area, keep an eye open for their products. read more

It is now known as Marsh Hen Mill as owners wanted to update the name. Everything is the same but just has the new mill name. I love their heirloom blue grits along with several other items. I going to try their heirloom golden rice and check out the flavor. A lot of other items of other local vendors are for sale here also. I love this place! I travel to Folly Beach each year for 6 weeks and this is always a stop! I have gotten my friends in Michigan hooked on the gold rice, grits and the farro. Geechie Boy has hands down the best cornmeal I've ever had. However, I ordered some so that I could make corn bread for Thanksgiving dressing. Paid extra for shipping ($50!) so that it would get here in time for the holiday. Took three business days for them to even get it in the mail, and now it won't arrive until the Friday after. Sure glad I shelled out the extra, frankly exorbitant, fee for the fast shipping. It's not like that might be a clue that I might want it by a particular date. What a waste of money. read more
