Great for families and friends who want to share a few dishes in a casual (think: fast food) environment. It's certainly not going to win any decor or ambience prizes, but I like the family-friendly atmosphere and it hit the spot when I needed lunch in a short time frame. Order and pay at the counter and then take your wooden spoon table number and set up at one of the many tables. I shared two mixed plates of mezze (felafel, kibbeh and other fried morsels), salads (super fresh fattoush and tabbouli) and dips with Miss 3 and my favourite +1. The mix and match approach to this style of dining is great when you're trying to please varying tastes and appetites. I could have lived with less of the fried pastry-like mezze and more of the felafel so next time will specify which mezze we want rather than leaving the selection to the server. I'll also be trying out the lebanese pizzas. Starting at a mere $1 and constantly being made in full-view of the floor. Pro tip: Grab a bottle of hot sauce from the water/cutlery

Atmosphere-wise, it's definitely a unique gem in this area. Food-wise, it's pretty decent. They had a few vegetarian options (adas polo, kashk-e bademjan, and mirza ghasemi). Those last two are eggplant, which I'm not wild about, so I went for the adas polo and specified that I was vegan (although I'm not sure there's anything non-vegan about adas polo in its original form). Adas polo has rice, lentils, and raisins. I love the Persian-style long-grain white and yellow rice, so I enjoyed this dish. The seasoning was interesting and the raisins added a sweet, exotic flavour. The service could've been improved. It was a little inattentive, but we didn't mind. We came on a late Saturday afternoon before the usual dinner hour, and the place was pretty quiet -- just us and one other couple. Basically, I wouldn't rush out of my way to come back out here, but it's definitely a nice and unique eatery, especially for this area.

Although we were seated promptly, the service was a little lack lustre. I would put down to the fact that our server was under the pump as the other servers were attending to maintenance works and take away orders. Despite this, our server was quite helpful when we asked questions about the menu. We made our order and waited an appropriate amount of time before our dishes came out. I ordered the Khoresht-E Gheymeh which came in two plates. One was the rice plate with a touch of saffron and a side yoghurt based accompaniment with cucumber and sweet raisins. The meat dish was a pile of boneless lamb laying in a lime flavoured red gravy with split peas with "French fries" (the chips labelled as this) sprinkled on top. I quite liked my dish but wouldn't go out of my way to say it was delicious. I found the rice to be a bit too much for me, despite my valiant efforts to polish it off. For dessert we ordered the sweets platter for take away (we were way too full to eat it straight away and I can't say no to baklava!). We got four different types and 6 or 8 of another orange doughy, syrupy type. Unfortunately I don't know their names but they were delicious as always. The or a ge sweets were a touch sickly sweet but it still went down a treat for me.

The casual atmosphere in this large and loud restaurant is a great backdrop for the menu. Choose from banquet options, mezze or mains, along with platters and sides. The gyros is perfectly cooked and delicious, not quite the same as wandering along a Greek port with gyros in hand, but you can't have everything! The mixed dips are also fresh and flavourful. This place celebrates Greece and specializes in functions so you get to celebrate too. They have a separate function space and also host large groups in the restaurant, if you ask nicely they may even open for just your group at lunch! The last time I was here was a work dinner and the atmosphere, food and music, along with the company, made for a spirited evening. This place is popular on Friday and Saturday night so book ahead if you can. You don't want to miss the belly dancing. Eos is Fully Licensed and BYO wine only. OPA!

It can get quite busy and loud on the weekends so when eating in I try to get in early or on a weekday. Always check the specials board for some very interesting dishes.

And it's totally authentic (you're in Campbellfield, after all.) We've been here a few times and have gotten a variety of dishes. Staff knows what "vegan" means and will be sure to make your food without dairy or egg as long as you specify it when ordering. We've tried a few things on the menu, but I like the vegetarian plate, which comes with 7 falafel balls, hummus, and foul, as well as some pickled turnips. (Foul is a dish made from fava beans, chickpeas, and lemon oil -- an interesting flavour that I wasn't used to before I started eating foul. I like it, but maybe it's a bit of an acquired taste.) Their falafels are made using "grandma's recipe" and are light, fluffy, and fresh-tasting -- not heavy or greasy like from a kebab shop. Very nice falafels. The vegetarian plate will set you back $12 and is heaps of food. Cheeeeeeap. You can also get a falafel wrap for a mere $5, or a more exotic Iraqi falafel wrap that comes with Iraqi bread and pickled-mango "ambah" sauce. (I haven't tried this yet.) My boyfriend always gets the hummus fatteh (called "tesiyeh" in some countries, like Syria) -- which is a hummus-yogurt type of dish. Unfortunately, they don't have a dairy-free version of this, so it's not vegan. Definitely stop in at Falafel Moudy if you are hungry and want some excellent vegetarian Middle Eastern food on the cheap!

It has a balcony out front with seating for a dozen or so people, and as it was pleasantly warm I ate out there. In a cocktail sort of mood so started with a Tides of Beirut - Arak, Cointreau, Ginger ale and lemon juice. Very refreshing and the Arak gave it a real licorice kick. Good value at $14. I'm definitely a grazer when it comes to food so rather than ordering a main I opted for two entrees. First up was kibbeh which is one of my favourite Lebanese dishes - delicious little footballs made from minced lamb, cracked wheat and pine nuts served on a bed of rocket with a side of yoghurt. Wrapped up in a piece of pita bread, this makes for great finger food and with three pieces for $12 good value to boot. Next was Zaa'ter calamari, grilled and served on more rocket with fresh pomegranate. This was quite good but nothing out of the ordinary. I was hoping for something a little spicier. Generous serve for an entree and I wasn't able to finish it all. Overall, good value for money, good location and the lady who served me was attentive and friendly. Worth a five minute detour from Chapel Street if you're in the mood for Middle Eastern cuisine.

As of this month, my prayers were answered in the form of Zurouna, the newest Middle Eastern addition to South Yarra. In a word, Zurouna is sensational. It is authentic, diverse (representing Levantine but also North African cuisine as well), elegantly but accessibly fitted out with Middle Eastern lamps and mosaic patterns, and accented with really lovely staff. A rundown of what we ate: Moutabbal - smooth, smoky eggplant dip perfect for scooping up with the fresh and fried Arabic bread that is constantly replenished. Za'atar calamari - coils of tender, za'atar-sprinkled grilled squid, with rocket, simple lemon and olive oil dressing, and fresh pomegranate seeds. Perfectly cooked, not a hint of chewiness. Ma'anek - lean Lebanese-style lamb sausages with olive oil and parsley. Not greasy, gristly or gamey at all, just how they should be. Lamb shank with freekeh and yogurt - there was no shank that day, so we had shoulder instead which was sensational. Exceptionally tender lamb with nutty toasted freekeh (green wheat) and garlic yogurt. Middle Eastern home cooking at its best. Chermoula prawns - four chargrilled king prawns, marinated in North African chermoula (a beautiful garlic, coriander, parsley and cumin sauce) topping an equally aromatic cous cous salad. Chicken tagine - tender chicken breast simmered in a spicy harissa tomato sauce with plump olives, chick peas and peppers. Served with almond rice on the side, this was my husband's and sister-in-law's favorite of the night. Baklava, turkish delight and fairy floss, plus mint teas for dessert. They have very authentically added a cinnamon stick to each glass of mint tea, a classic flavor combination of North Africa. Let the mint steep in the pot, then swirl your cinnamon stick around gently for a minute to infuse. Remove and drink. I was NOT expecting this when I saw the "coming soon" sign a few weeks ago. Traditionally this particular property has been filled and abandoned by lackluster restaurants. Zurouna is beautiful and here to stay, the kind of place that makes me so proud of my culinary heritage.
