The next day I inspected the attic thinking that maybe the solar panels installed two years ago may be the cause. To my surprise and relief the cause was a missing plastic cover that was on the roofs powered exhaust vent. It had blown off during Fridays storm. Luckily my tenant had stored the cover but did know what it was. The vent with the cover on looks like a mushroom. On Sunday, I used Angie 's list to located a Staten Island roofer since my Brooklyn guy had not yet called back and I didn't want to risk another rain storm. The first contractor that called was already talking about replacing the exhaust vent at about $1600 for the job I cut him short since I only wanted a cover replaced. I said this is not looking good . Good bye. About 5 minutes later Marke calls me I got lucky, real lucky in finding a guy that did not try to cheat me. I told him all that was needed was to replace the cover. I texted him the photos of the cover. He stated that he could possibly fix the cover once he takes a look at it. It may be hard to find a replacement. At 10am he arrived at the house with his father. (Once he said that was his father, I knew I had the right guy) He inspected the roof and confirmed he could do a decent repair. He showed me pics of the roof vent. No need to change it. He used metal strips and screws to attach the cover. Then he placed ice/water shield and adhered it to the cover. He took pics again after the repair. The price was very reasonable The honesty was superb The time arrangement could not have been better. I paid cash and he later emailed me an invoice as I had requested. He is a good man who works with his father and since he did not steer me wrong, I decided to give him an excellent review!! I hope you call him if you ever do need a reliable and honest roofer. By the way, my Brooklyn roofer did call me back and confirmed that he would have done the same.

He exclaimed a minimum of 2 men are required and it will take all day! REALLY? His estimate to CLEAN the debris from the roof gutters (3 sides) came to $750! REALLY? Honest business here? I then asked him what it would cost to clean my next door neighbor's roof gutters so that I can capitalize of some economies of scale here. The estimator then lowered his price to $450/house. REALLY? To make a long story short, I went with a STATEN ISLAND guy that gave me quote over the phone after sending in my house pic and he quoted me $175/house!!!! Why are manual laborers like this so dishonest? Whatever happened to honest day's work? Whatever happened to one's honesty? So much for religion, diversity, equity and inclusion?!?!?!? I already had an initial quote for repairs, but my insurance company wanted a second one. Not having dealt with an insurance claim I really didn't know where to start. It was important for me to ensure that I find a company that will get the work done, correctly. Based on multiple positive reviews I called to receive an estimate. Laurie was just great. She took her time, answered all my questions and laid out how they will get the repairs done. Then she scheduled our inspection/estimate. Pawel (Paul) came to the house to survey the damages. I was at work and my wife was at home. Pawel took his time, let my wife get me on the phone and answered all our questions. Pawel is a true gentleman and was very respectful of our time and property. I had a detailed estimate within 48 hours of Pawel's departure. Of course, waiting on the insurance company to go through their internal process was a pain, but Laurie maintained contact and did not pressure us in getting them there any sooner. As soon as our settlement was in Laurie was able to get us right onto the schedule. On the day of work the B&B Siding Team showed up at 7:45am with an army. Needed an entire new roof w/ shingles and rafter/structure/soffit and siding repairs. 6.5 hours later and I had a new roof! Weather delayed the gutter team but they again showed up as rescheduled and both Pawel and Laurie kept me apprised every step of the way. I have a full enclosed gutter and Pawel made sure the gutter install team was aware of that. Money well spent! The entire experience was regarding in the end as I have my garage back, better than ever. Peace of mind that the job was done right.

The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

Therefore, it's hard to give them more than a couple stars since the main value of having a roof is to prevent leaks, which this roof currently does not do. ORIGINAL: In short -- highly recommend. We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.

My roof was in very bad shape and I had many roofers tell me or give me a choice of just putting on a new layer. John was the only one that said NO and told me that all the old stuff must be removed. I am glad that I listened to John. This house was built in the 1930s and the old roofing material was about 6-8 inches thick and so dried out that it was hard as rock. It must have weighed several tons, if not more. My roof is now over 4 years old and it still looks like the day it was put on. The material selection and workmanship is excellent after more than 4 years.

What stood out about Jon and his team was their positive reviews and responsiveness. An estimator came to my home in less than 12 hours for a free quote and more importantly, provided insight to where the water was coming from and options to remedy the problem. Based on my conversations I decided to go with a small, repair job. When the roofers began their work, the situation evolved into something more serious. Inside I feared this all along: that a repair would only delay the water from eventually coming back into the house. And that's when I talked it over in person with Jon. They did a good job cleaning up. I had my roof done back in June. I haven't had any issues since. I was concerned about an issue but they came in immediately and checked it, and it was fine - I'm a first time homeowner so almost everything makes my antsy.
