Within this last year the store went through a rebranding, signs and colours changed and the inventory was updated to carry all the 'Western Family' brand items. However, compared to the other 'Safe-On-Foods' stores we know (e.g. the one in Panatella Hill, Calgary) this is still far away from a typical store. We are almost never able to get everything we need by visiting this one store only and some items like the 'Trifle' never made it to Cochrane. As Safeway is no real alternative to us (buy 5 and the price is not as ridiculous as for 1 item) we started shopping for groceries in Calgary on the way home from work again.

The store was bright, and shelves seemed to be stocked, and even though there were people, I didn't feel it was too busy. I picked up $1 bread, sushi from a decent selection, and a premade salad for less than $3. I also got snacks for our drive home at reasonable prices. There were two entrances, and I entered from the side with the elevator. The other side had escalators and there were a lot of people hanging out at the bottom of them. They likely have a lot of activity, as during two days we twice saw firetrucks, ambulances, and police cars but during my visits, there was no activity.

The Safeway checker was there and we told her our Safeway card was refused. She was rude and told us it doesn't work if you're from the US. So because of her rudeness we put the sodas to the side. I have spent many a birthday or anniversary at a local Grocery Outlet or favorite Health Food Store, Forget Disneyland - grocery stores are where the real magic happens. And Rusticana is one such blessed spot. We had just arrived in Canada in the late evening and I wasn't having much luck at two bigger grocery stores in Calgary. There was a staleness about them. They didn't feel right. And so driving through Canmore - my husband suggested I see if there were any grocery/health stores open in the area. It was nearing 11 in the evening and most of the area was quiet. I was surprised to see that there was indeed one darling store open - Rusticana. I had a good feeling - the moment I read its name aloud - and proudly announced to my husband: "This is the one." We pulled up and I ran out. It was close to their closing time, but the kind man behind the counter smiled at me and encouraged me to look around. The place was beautifully curated with magical grocery gems everywhere. I kept on ooohing and aahing down every aisle. There was non dairy milk, specialty fresh meats, freshly baked goods, and soooo much more. There was so much goodness packed into such a cute space. I could have spent hours in Rusticana - but I quickly grabbed some fun finds and made my way to the counter to pay. Pure happiness beamed from my face. We went to many other grocery stores throughout our time in Canada - but none spoke to me quite the same way that lovely Rusticana did. If you're in the area and looking for a treat - stop in here. Trust.

Sure, it will be a bit pricier than normal grocers but totally worth it in my opinion! I got a lot of stuff, beautiful organic avocados, tumeric root, bison pepperoni sticks, etc, etc! They have soap, shampoo, everything! The place was large but manageable, clean and staff friendly at the til. I cannot wait to go back!
