Wellington Square Shopping Centre

No idea why this place exists. No idea. Plans for it must have been drawn up in the 70s. Throughout…read moremy childhood there was this notice on the pub next to the halifax saying plans were underway, and they came up with this false shopping street, all outside, so you get rained on, and basically all the proper shops that were in the High Street or the Castle Shopping centre are now here. It's busy but the High Street used to be busy. Back in Stockton recently, for the first time ever there are boarded up properties ON THE HIGH STREET. What the hell??? In real terms there are a lot more failed businesses, but those premises get charity shops stuffed inside them. Ok, Wellington Square has basically changed the layout of Regent street behind the High Street, so that portion of it no longer exists. A historic grade 3 building, and the listed Baptist Tabernacle, featured on Songs of Praise, were both demolished. In return, we get an Hmv, an extended Debenhams, an extended Marks, a cheap bookshop and an H&M. I bought a cheap McLovin t-shirt from HMV so i suppose I'm a bit of a hypocrite. Because this place now has its own large carpark, I think the rest of the high street is doomed, and will probably revert to being housing, which may just save it. Stockton should be a string of boutique shops like Yarm or Northallerton but the council doesn't have the imagination. Shame.

Wellington Square is a reasonably new development just behind Stockton High Street, it can be…read moreaccessed from High Street or from Dovecot Street. There's a nice selection of shops in Wellington Square River Island, Top Shop and H&M for fashion, HMV and Game for entertainment, WH Smiths and The Works for books, Cafe Nero and Greggs for food and drinks, Superdrug and Sally's for hair and beauty as well as several mobile phone shops, jewellry shops, Rawcliffes, Lidl, Claires Accessories and an entrance to Debenhams. There's also a hairdressing salon and Public Toilets. The walkway is clean, with several litter bins available to use and there are shelters along either side of the walkway to help shoppers cope with the rain a little better.

Fenwick is a large department store, located in Newcastle city centre, it's spread over five floors…read moreand is one of the anchor stores at Eldon Square Shopping Centre. Fenwick as a brand has 8 locations across the country and was founded here in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This location is their flagship. The store has entrances on street level (Northumberland Street) as well as entrances from the mall. The store is open until 7 pm on most days, although opening hours can vary, this means they're generally open an hour later than John Lewis, which is the mall's other main department store. The store is fairly attractive, with modern and older parts and the selection again is reasonable. The renovation is starting to show which is ongoing to celebrate the store's 140th anniversary. The Food Hall area reminded me a little of a smaller version of Harrods, pricey for sure but they had a variety of items appearing to be high-quality, including some meats which looked of a fantastic quality. I much prefer the technology section at John Lewis nearby, however - although Fenwick for sure wins on the Food Hall side of things. 4*

Whether it be perfumes, international foods from the food hall or homeware products Fenwicks has it all. There's a great choice of places to dine too including an American diner and Cafe 21 for those who literally like to shop until they drop. Plus what a bonus!! Every Christmas time they unveil their Christmas window (which changes each year) and flood Northumberland street with the cheery sound of Christmas music!
