Before setting out on a long journey, I think it's highly advisable to stock up on provisions. Not just because train buffets can be unpredictable, but stock levels are also notoriously fickle - it's not unusual for them to run out of sandwiches within minutes, it seems to me - and they are quite pricey for what you get. So this M&S Simply Food is a compulsory stop for me on my regular visits to see the folks in Wales. I love their avocado and spinach sandwiches with mustard and pine-nuts, and the chocolate flapjacks. As with all M&S stuff, it's a little pricey, but it is reliable on quality, and they are making a big effort these days to be more environmentally aware, and to purchase fairly traded goods. Staff here always seem friendly, and it's less frenetic than the adjacent Sainsbury's. This branch is also good for buying fresh flowers to present to your hosts at the other end, and with generous opening hours, worth knowing about if you are stuck for provisions late in the evening.

The store is always clean and the staff are very helpful. I've never seen expired food on the shelves.

Kathmandu is the ultimate in getting kitted out for the world of outdoors. From hiking boots to waterproofs to biking gear, it even has yoga bits and pieces if you wish to indulge whilst on the hills. You can also buy camping equipment and travel accessories. I have to admit, shopping for camping excites me as much as shopping for drills and hammers but the staff in here are really friendly, helpful and made my visit quite appealing. That had nothing to do with the fact that the guys are very good looking of course! It is really great here for buying presents for friends who like to travel as it has everything you could ever need. I also bought some cool new gym gear which I wasn't expecting to find so that was definitely a bonus.

If I saw something I wanted to buy, I would pick it, look at the queue, put it back down and walk out. If I really wanted something, I would come back at a later date, but make sure that I arrived and got served before the hoard of shoppers arrived. I have to say, since the opening of the two huge Primark stores on Oxford Street, things in this particular branch have inproved enormously. The display no longer a thrift shop appearance of jumbles clothes. Also the queues are not as bad as they used be. I think the die hard Primark shoppers would rather make the trek to Oxford Street, where the chioce of goods is that much greater. For any American visitors coming to London wondering what kind of store Primark is, think an even cheaper version of Old Navy for clothes and Walmart of bedding and household accessories. The reason this store only gets three stars is due to the size of the store means that the selection is limited and does not cover the full range of Primark goods.

But, after my visit to the Kilburn location I learned that each store is very (VERY) different than the next. Crap is EVERYWHERE. I seriously didn't even see anyone working there picking things up. I know Oxford Circus is the huge, flagship store, but they always have about 50 workers scrambling around the tourists trying to fix up the shop in order. Any retail business should care as least a little bit if their merchandise is all on the floor. It shouldn't matter if it's only 1 quid either. Not only is this location a complete and utter disaster, but the merchandise isn't even any good. Yes, the store is smaller, but I found what is in store not to be really any worth buying. Suck it up, wake up at 9 and go to the Oxford Circus location. TRUST ME.
