Old Bay came in highly recommended with a 4.7 star rating. We got other bids from contractors 4.5 stars and above. We had a contractor who showed up on TV who bid the job at 4 times the price of Old Bay and we had contractors who my wife called 'Chuck in the truck' contractors who bid my kitchen at 30% cheaper than Old Bay. The big name contractor came with his pamphlet, tried to push his branded materials on us - "You can only choose backsplash from this pamphlet" they said. We had to wait 10 weeks to get started they said. They will give us warranties on materials for 10 years, but we have to pay for labor, would something go wrong. The estimate was a 10 pages long with 9 pages of their marketing bullshit and one page of the actual estimate. Also wanted me to pay for design before they even gave me any drawings - not even rough drawings with the estimate. The Chick in the truck - unlicensed guy with his helper in a truck, said he can start tomorrow. We can purchase any materials and he will put it in. He gave us a labor only bid literally handwritten on a notepad piece of paper. I was pretty sure after the work is complete, I would never see him again. Then comes Old Bay Remodeling and Bill Keeling. Licenses and Insurance checked out. Reasonable 5 weeks delays to start the job. Detailed drawings and sketches with a 3d rendering of how things would look at the end. The process took about 5 days with some edits. But we were able to sign a well written contract, 3 pages long. But no marketing bullshit or content. 3 pages of how the work will be done, what is included, not included and what ifs. We went with them mainly because of Bill the sales guys and Sara the designer. The construction started and there were some hiccups, but mostly all right. The job was completed with a 2 day delay - I'll give them a pass on that. Trash was left outside for couple days, and I had to call the office to get it removed. But the actual kitchen looks great!

Materials!!! - After the Job was sold, I was contacted by the office saying they do it a bit differently from other contractors. They purchase all materials up front. As a customer, you get the option to have it delivered on your yard or into their warehouse. The idea was this way, they do not have to stop for buying materials. I did a little research and quickly understood the materials and shipments were delayed and is causing a lot of disruption in the construction industry. Well - it is a good idea to have everything before we start work. I was right and wrong. Old Bay moved in record pace to get a 550 sqft addition completed in 7 weeks. But I lot my 1/2 acre backyard to materials - lumber, nails, siding, roofing materials for 2 months. The lawn was damaged from materials being on the grass for too long. Old Bay agreed to come back and reseed the lawn, so I'll give it a pass on that. There were literally 150 bags of concrete lying outside in 2 storms and I lost my sleep. Ended up that it was covered and protected properly. But I got so stressed out! If anyone is reading this, ask them to store materials in their warehouse and bring it when required. 2. Installers - Old bay had the same crew do the job from start to finish. They only had electric, ac and plumbing guys do their separate jobs. Apart from that - starting at demo, digging, pavers, carpentry, roof, windows, even painting done by the same 4 guys. I don't know how they did it, but they pulled it off. In my line of work, I do the same thing and become an expert at it. I was stressed out again and I hired a third party home inspector to make sure everything was done correctly. Very surprised the inspector also mentioned this is very unusual, but the job quality was up highly recommended. Howard County inspector was also surprised by the pace of things. He has inspected other work from Old Bay and said he has seen them drop off tons of materials in the yard before. 3. Rough Start and Payments - Not sure if this is a problem to anyone else, but we had to pay for all out materials up front. Old Bay promptly delivered the materials to our house and it came from a bunch of vendors. But paying all materials up front on a huge project like this runs into tens of thousands of dollars. Old Bay also sent many people to look at the job - there was an engineer, multiple plumbers, electricians etc. I guess they got many bids from their sub contractors. But I was not a big fan of 10 people visiting my house during the pandemic - They all had masks etc, but just too many people in the house. I called the office about this and I was told they do all the work in the beginning and when they get going, they will move fast. Another reason for me to stress out in the beginning, but was happy at the end. 4. Communication - It was very hard to reach the office and the project manager. Maybe I ask too many questions - I don't know. But when the job started, I would receive 2 calls every week from the office. Would casually check in, give me a run down of what is going to happen next week, ask if I had any questions etc. That was very helpful. It would be very nice to get these calls before the job starts. I am submitting this review so that the people can understand what is good and bad about this contractor.

The next day she phoned back to inquire whether the wall is a load-bearing wall (not something that the average homeowner would know). Further on the scheduled appointment day, within the appointment window their technician pro called and indicated we could do a 'virtual' appointment. I was outdone. When I objected and expressed that the scheduler let me know that the company rep would be 'ARRIVING' between 12- 1pm - not calling for a virtual appointment, he said he would reach out ' and see if someone else was available to assist me" that day. A few minutes later, I received not a call but instead an email inviting me to take their next available schedule date 3 or 4 days later. This hinted me to what their service and fulfillment of work would be like. VERY NEGATIVE Experience! I would NOT recommend this business.

This would have been a disaster as the remaining siding was 25 years old and there was no exact matching of the siding. Through the advice of Mike we were able to better negotiate with our insurance company and was able to have the entire side of the home re-sided. It took several months of negotiating with the insurance company but both Mike and Jason stayed on it and today we have our home repaired to better than new condition. The two gentlemen who worked on the siding were very patient and careful. The work was completed at the highest level with clean neat caulking and siding that fits snugly against the wall. Custom Concepts Construction (CCC) did two major jobs for us in late 2025, mostly involving…read morereplacing wood with James Hardie fiber-cement materials, other carpentry work, and gutters. We are extremely pleased with their work. We chose CCC for three reasons: 1. They are Elite Preferred James Hardie installers who carefully follow the Hardie standards of installation. 2. The co-owners and lead carpenter are experienced with all aspects of residential carpentry, having built homes and additions in the past. 3. The co-owner in charge of sales, Michael Swank, gave authoritative, unpressured advice and presented a masterfully written, detailed proposal with a detailed description and all charges. The price of their proposal was similar to, or lower than, those we received from other exterior contractors. One of our jobs was to replace all wood siding and trim with Hardie siding, trim, and panels on two three-story towers. I expected some difficulties with scaffolding over a stairwell, but the lead carpenter Kerdy and his assistants did the job masterfully, resulting in carefully executed, beautiful results. The second job was to renovate our 100-year-old garage by not only replacing sheathing, siding, and trim but also installing new interior wood beams (rafter ties and collar ties) and additional studs recommended by an engineer to stabilize the sagging garage framing structure. They skillfully manipulated the framing to straighten out the rear garage wall and front central post, which were bowing outward, as well as to straighten out the sagging ridge. During this process they erected temporary support posts inside the garage. We were glad to have hired a team who knew what they were doing with framing as well as exteriors. They also installed a new Pella window and figured out how to do the problematic moving of our shed next to the garage. Their subcontractor competently replaced all of our gutters and downspouts with larger ones. The project manager Daniel Harper, a co-owner of the company, directed the carpenters, handled the logistics of the job, and ensured the high quality of the finished product. We found CCC to be a well-organized and responsive small firm that is easy to communicate with. It was a particular pleasure to interact with Kerdy, the lead carpenter, who always provided clear and polite explanations. Billing was expertly handled by Katherine, who took our credit card payments without charging a fee. In summary, we highly recommend this company for exterior work!

Initially chose to engage Bowie Siding & Roofing (BS&R) as they participated in a Christian…read morebusiness social I attended and advertised they provided the service I required. Contacted the office to request estimate for the desired service. Within a reasonable time schedule someone sent out to perform an estimate. The estimator was a sub-contractor, who seemed to be knowledgeable and able to perform the service I was requesting. Received the proposed contract for services within a day or so from BS&R. Accepted the terms of the contract w/in a week with suggested times for scheduling the work. From here things went downhill as far as service from BS&R. BS&R never followed up to schedule work with sub-contractor. I personally contacted and scheduled with the sub-contractor. Before sub-contractor arrived to do work, BS&R sent me a blank invoice (no details of any completion of work as stated in the proposed contract) with a full amount due prior to any work being completed; which was not within the terms of the contract that provided for payment upon completion of the work. After initial day of work, I contacted BS&R to inform them of some concerns with the work done. I was informed by them that the sub-contractor indicated the work was done as outlined in the contract and I would be required to pay-in-full. I wrote a written letter indicating that I didn't believe the work was completed and still BS&R said the contractor said it was done, pay us the money you owe us within 3 days or we'll send your account to Collections and file suit at the courthouse. No, I'm sorry. No, we'll send someone out to investigate your concerns. Just, I'm sorry you feel that way but it's not our concern, "pay us the money you owe us". Christian company, I think not! Rude! No concern for customer service! Abysmal communication. Not empathetic. Irresponsible. Threatening. Bullies. PRO: The sub-contractor BS&R contracted to do the work was professional, committed to providing quality service and followed up to ensure the work was completed to my satisfaction, which it eventually was. No thanks to BS&R. CON: Everything listed above; having to interact with Bowie Siding & Roofing for this work. Never again and will surely ever recommend them to anyone. They are on my poo-poo list for sure.
