The store is too small. It's hard to maneuver around customers. They don't have enough cashiers. The ones who are there are overworked.

I am so disheartened by the way I was treated today by the Management at my job. I was in such a great mood serving every customer with my best! I understand eveyone just like myself, are all fighting battles, no one else knows. So before begin I to ring in, their overpriced food to feed themselves and families. HERE IS THE PROBLEM #marketbasket has a STRICKLY ENFOCED COMMAND! To wear what they call a SMOCK (Really a SMACK in the face) a Ugly if you ask me Color Coat. That which by Color shows their Position or Department. I was So HOT AND UNCOMFORTABLE! I Suffer from Severe Anxiety at times which does not help at all in the matter. And yes I took my prescribed medication before work. SO I DID THE WORST UNACCEPTABLE THING. I took my coat off, and pinned my Name tag to my white buttoned up professional white shirt. Then I was told to PUT IT BACK ON! And was removed from my Register. Don't worry I am sure the Owner can watch it from the Recorded feed, since there is a camera lense on the register, pointed at my directly in my Face! Last week I forgot a paid items bag at the cash register bagging area. I discovered the loss on my way to my car. Not more than 4 minutes I reentered, went to the cashier. He pointed to the supervisor area. I said to them that I just left my bag. Low and behold on only 4 minutes from purchase market basket had untagged my items and put them in a cart with many other leave behind items and were intent on restocking and reselling. I have no problem if at the end of a day they restock abandoned items, but really Arthur are you really ripping off your customers by sunbathing left behind items from 4 minutes earlier? I like Market Basket. If not for the cheap prices, then for the 3.99$ whole chickens that they never seem to run out of. To Suzanne G. If you've ever visited the Market Basket in Chelsea.. you won't be saying what you said. That one has everything, it's like the Market Basket Superstore. With that being said.. this one isn't. The parking situation isn't too great either. There's too much going on in the lot and in the surrounding streets. During rush hour.. forget it! That's why this place doesn't get 4 stars. The best of everything! Meat department has it all! Good quality Very Fresh cuts from inexpensive to Prime! Love that every department caters to all levels of anyone's pocketbooks! They absolutely care about their shoppers. If You cannot find it they will order it for you. I have Always found it to be the BEST Supermarket around for the last 50 years. Their Deli is great. Cannot beat the prices especially for the quality. And their seafood department is excellent! One of the biggest, and for me the most important difference is, between Market Basket and other supermarkets it has always doted on families! The two gentleman who rang me up and also bagged my groceries at register 3 get a 5 star. But that's it, all of the other employees are completely unfriendly-- especially the young kid who's always bringing in carts/bagging. There is something a little creepy about every Market Basket I've ever been to. Certainly their prices on things are the lowest compared to Shaw's or Hannaford. But all the stores have a weird smell to them. I'm not so much liking the smell... They do have some interesting things in the ethnic foods sections, and once I got a whole tray of fresh figs for about 15 cents per fig cuz they didn't have a code or some such thing. We had figs in many ways that weekend! But for things like Parmalat milk boxes and Greek yogurt when i can't make it to Trader Joe's, this is the place. I buy tomatoes here occasionally. Almost every time they charge me the wrong price than what is on display. Price codes seem to be inaccurate and rarely corrected. What gets me is I am charged for the higher priced tomatoes even though I am buying a different variety. Don't have this problem at the other MB's. is this a management problem? read more

Comparing it to the MB in Chelsea this supermarket is not very good at all. It's super tiny. Looks dirty. The food selection is horrible. They only carry the smallest variety of fruits which is a bummer. I didn't like it at all. I'll be the one not returning or taking this market into consideration as the last resort. read more

I know most Market Baskets get a bad rap but its the only place I shop for groceries. Sure they may look like downtown Cambodia, they're always super busy and cramped, the carts aren't in the best shape, people won't move in the aisles, and the music and lightning is awful but all of it is worth it. If you don't like Lowell area Market Baskets you don't know whats good for you. First, its hands down the cheapest. Hannafords, Shaws or whatever simply can not compare to Market Basket's prices. Even Market Basket brand items (like ketchup, peanut butter, any sort of cleaning product) are basically indistinguishable from brand names and they're the cheapest option. Secondly, they are old school so they carry items you won't typically find at other supermarkets. Twine for roasts, meat items like honeycomb tripe, whole stewing hens, salt pork, lamb neck etc. Third, since they are so cheap many of the immigrant groups flock to Market Basket (at least in Lowell) thus the great variety of ethnic goods. You'll find everything from Southeast Asian to Greek to Hispanic to Portuguese and everything in between. You can get Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Greece by the GALLON and it's just as good as those mass-marketed brands and its ridiculously cheap. If you need spring roll wrappers (real spring rolls not wonton wrappers), fish sauce, canned quail eggs or ANYTHING Asian they've got whole aisles dedicated to it. Also aisle fulls of Hispanic goods. Fourth, they have a good selection of more upscale items. They have good imported cheeses (as well as Roth Kase in Wisconsin, one of my favorite cheese makers), good olive oils, real canned San Marzano tomatoes, quality vinegars etc. etc. Last, their produce and fish are good. Their produce is always fresh and they have a great selection. They're much busier than Hannafords and thus have a much better turn over which is essential to produce. Also a lot of their fish comes fresh daily from New England day-boat fisherman. Sometimes it may come packaged in those plastic trays if your Market Basket don't have a fish counter but it's still good and if take a minute to carefully check out their fish you won't leave with anything you'd be disappointed with. Here for 2 weeks for work...at first I was leery of the store not thinking, at first glance, that it would have any organic/gluten free offerings. But they did. I was pleasantly surprised. Nitrate free lunch meats, organic milks, cheeses, org humus, various glutino products and other gluten free brands, organic coffee, various organic veggies and fruits, etc. A good selection of natural hygiene and beauty products too. I am done with this place. They are always restocking during peak times, and then get irritated because you want to buy something they are standing in front of. Checkout lines are barely wide enough to fit a cart through. Many employees act like you are an inconvenience to them. Dosent have all the items the other market baskets do. never had an issue with the employees but the store doesnt draw you in or make you want to come back. The store is so small. I usually go to the one on Bridge street. This place has like 5 registers and its kinda gross. Its dirty but not because they don't clean it, but because its old. I swear the people don't take their jobs seriously! I asked some one from produce for a watermelon to have some fun with ( I love watermelon ;) ) He went out back for like 20 min. They were probably playing games back there. Other than that the employees are nice i guess. i can run around the store in 20 min. A lot of people in this ghetto basket cant speak English though.... That's kinda important. If i had a quarter for everytime i had to what forever because someone had wic or not enough money on their ETB id be rich. The end!
