Dr Sherman is an incredibly talented and skilled surgeon. He has performed two procedures on two different occasions. My most recent procedure was an incarcerated umbilical hernia repair. Both of my recoveries have been remarkable. I did not experience any problems. He is the most amazing doctor I have ever met. He is very compassionate, patient, caring and a good listener. I recently had my recurrent inguinal hernia repair by Dr. Sherman and he did a great job with me. I consulted a couple of different surgeons and Dr. Sherman was the only Dr. who showed empathy towards me and seemed to actually care for me as a patient. He explained the entire process to me and patiently answered all my questions. The surgery went very well and I recovered very well. I had very little pain after the procedure and never needed more than just Tylenol. At 8 weeks post surgery, I am feeling great and back to my normal routine. I live in Oregon, but had previously had an excellent experience at Scripps. So I researched for the best surgeon specializing in Hernia surgery that was aligned with Scripps Hospital. Dr. Sherman's repeatedly surfaced to the top. I had a consultative call with him and discussed my challenge with how long I could stay in San Diego asking if he could fit me in and facilitate all the appointments in as short of possible time period. He worked with me to accommodate this logistics challenge. My wife and I met with Dr. Sherman once we arrived and immediately went over surgery options and his recommendations for laparoscopic outpatient surgery which would leave me with only three tiny incisions, mesh on the inside rather then exterior. I left his office with a surgery date and immediately started on necessary tests, insurance items in order. The day of surgery was well communicated and orchestrated with multiple reminders and instructions. The staff at the surgery center worked as a well oiled team, while being friendly and professional. After three hours, I was able to get picked up. Before leaving the parking lot Dr. Sherman called to give me an overview of how things went. Recovery was swift with no complications. Overall Dr. Sherman was a wonderful partner through this needed surgery. He said I should never need to see him again, and that made us all happy. I highly recommend Dr. Mark Sherman. read more

I've also spent a decent amount of time as an in-patient, so I feel I can confidently recommend Dr. Sherman as one of the better doctors I've had. If you're looking on Yelp for physician reviews, then you already know how difficult it is to find a good GP, nevermind someone who's going to cut into you for something serious. I recently had a hernia repaired by Dr Sherman and the team at Surgical Center of San Diego, along with Dr Jenny Parker for anesthesia. I found Dr Sherman through San Diego Magazine's Best Doctors issue, where he has earned top ratings for a number of years. My surgery went very smoothly and recovery was even better than I had hoped. Dr Sherman was also able to check a very old prior hernia repair on the other side. I was able to walk 2 miles the next day and was back to running a few miles within 3 days - and only Tylenol for pain! The Surgical Center team provided excellent care and was very helpful in tracking my insurance claim processing. Dr Parker took care to understand my prior anesthesia issues and ensured that I had a pain-free surgery and smooth recovery. I'm now having to undergo a second hernia repair because the first surgery that this doctor did was done so poorly. I consulted him soon after the surgery was done to understand why I was experiencing such discomfort only to be told it was "normal." Well, it is not and it is not ok for a doctor to diagnose pain as normal after a badly done procedure. read more

I am very pleased with Dr. Sherman and his staff. Dr. Sherman was recommended to me by two doctors, so I was fairly confident when I met him. I think what makes the difference between a good doctor and an exceptional one is the time and consideration they give you, as well as following their instincts. I think this comes from experience more than just education. In my case, he discovered a second condition which did lead me to more contact with him and his staff beyond the standard three visits (pre-op, op, post-op). I felt that he was being very thorough, and I really appreciate that. He took the time to explain everything to me, give me options, and answer any questions I had. I know many are willing to write when things go wrong and few that think to write when things work out and we are comforted. I wanted to give this review so I can let others know how thankful I was last April and what a comfort Dr Sherman was during a very critical time in my mom's health. We have had Dr Sherman as my mom's surgeon for her Hiatal Hernia and her first surgery was 2 1/2 years ago. My mom has lived for many years with a hiatal hernia and has been on many meds for a long time and it was starting to cause problems with her breathing and her heart. We found Dr Sherman through a recommendation from her gastrointestinal doctor. I am a nurse since 1982 and have worked with many doctors and surgeons in the past. My mom has very compromised tissue in her esophagus and he tried to do the least invasive first which protocol and she requested that he not use a mesh which he respected her wish without making her feel she was ignorant. She is also a retired nurse. He always explains things so well and use visuals to help those who need to understand, to be able to understand. He always showed my mom respect and listened to everything she said even when she would go off on tangents and never made her feel that her feelings were not important. He is very good with the elderly. She had a second surgery a year later using a new mesh he felt was better and reviews on it were good too. Once again her stomach broke through that mesh but then decided to try and live with this and he again respected her choice. Eleven months later she had been having pain on and off for several months after eating but this time something was different. We went to a hospital closer to us and her stomach had twisted, there was a surgeon there and she had no problem with us calling him. I called very early in the morning hours after being in the ER for over 10 hours and he was not even on call that night but within five minutes, he called me back. I can't even begin to express how comforting it was to hear his voice on the other line. Even now it still is a very emotional feeling of gratitude that I have. He could have been upset because that I did not bring her to the correct hospital but instead he was very comforting and reassuring. He stated you would speak to the surgeon there and see what he could do. To hear the overhead paging the on call surgeon that he was on line to speak with her was very reassuring. He then called me back and reassured me that you had spoken with this surgeon and to move my mom was not in her best interest but her had spoken with this surgeon and explained the next surgery he would have performed on her and the surgeon was willing to give that a try. He brought me so much comfort that night, I felt that my and my mother's needs were very important to him. I and my mother are very thankful to have such a caring surgeon.
