A Hidden Gem for Mexican Seafood -- Don't Sleep on This Place!…read more As a traveler from California in town for a swim meet, I was on the hunt for good Mexican seafood and stumbled upon La Costa Grill. Based on the reviews, I had decent expectations -- but this place blew them out of the water. The ratings honestly don't do it justice. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was warm and genuine. We were greeted by the hostess and seated right away, even during the lunch rush. Then came a wonderful surprise: our server brought out a mini skillet of the most incredible black refried beans for dipping, alongside four salsas ranging from mild to hot, all served with tostadas -- compliments of the house. Back in California, you're lucky to get one salsa, let alone refried beans as a free starter. It immediately set the tone for the meal. Our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful with recommendations. We ended up sharing a lunch portion of paella, an octopus taco, and a fish ceviche tostada -- and every single dish delivered. The octopus taco was a standout; served over a layer of refried beans, it was a flavor combination I didn't know I needed. The ceviche tostada was fresh and bright, and the paella was satisfying and well-seasoned. I also have to give our server extra credit for her transparency -- she mentioned upfront that the paella leans heavier on rice than seafood. That kind of honesty is rare and really appreciated. We ordered it anyway, and we were glad we did. If you're visiting McAllen and want authentic, flavorful Mexican seafood with outstanding service and hospitality, La Costa Grill needs to be on your list. I'll absolutely be returning before I head back home.

No te vas a arrepentir. Gracias.

Very comparable to "El Huachinango," in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, MX. A few minutes from the border. They also have some of the best drinks in town, including micheladas, margaritas and many more. They are very generous and everything is served in an extra large mug or a huge "copa." They have your favorite import and domestic beers as well. The prices are pretty good, can't complain. The shrimp cocktail is one of my favorites, mixed with onion, cilantro and avacado. its not watery at all and topped with shrimp, Reynosa style! You will not be disappointed. The soups here are phenomenal, very loaded, a small bowl is like a full meal. I've tried the "sopa de mariscos" and it's simply one of the best I've tried. Full of all the sea goodies you could imagine, shrimp, octopus, tilapia, mussels and others. The broth is such a delicacy, it hits all the notes and then some. I try to not add that much lime that ruins the flavor, I just add half a lime that does it for me. The fried fish is another staple here or "chicharrón de pescado," very well cooked and well seasoned. The batter is spot on, gives it a great flavor and keeps fish nice and moist. It is served with a side of rice and a few veggies and tortillas. The homemade tartar sauce is delicious and so is their green salsa, has a nice kick that one. I highly recommend it, it's worth the drive. Stop by and try their amazing Shrimp Cocktail with a good Mexican beer!!

So, once I arrived I decided to try it out rather than backtrack to my intended destination. Upon entry I was greeted by three or four employees and seated immediately. The waitress brought me ice water and I also ordered coffee, which was very good. I looked over the menu and chose my favorite breakfast when in the Valley; Huevos a la Mexicana. The breakfast plate also comes with fried potatoes, refried beans and either toast or choice of tortillas. I always choose corn tortillas and these are very good, appearing to be home made vs typical store bought. They are thicker and have a more pronounced corn flavor. When my breakfast arrived I was surprised at the portion size, particularly the eggs. It was indeed, a large portion. It were filled with lots of diced onion, jalapeños and tomato and all appeared to be grilled prior to being added to the scrambled eggs. I also asked for salsa verde and this definitely did not disappoint. It was creamy and very spicy. Not thin and vinegary. It's the salsa verde that takes this dish over the top. The fried potatoes were the typical fare, cubed and fried. Maybe a bit larger dice than usual, but still cooked through and a bit crunchy. The refried beans were better than most places and had more flavor. I really enjoyed them. As stated earlier, the tortillas were good with a bit of chew to them, not thin and falling apart. And the coffee was really good for a restaurant that doesn't specialize in coffee. Rich, robust but not burned tasting. My cup never ran dry as the waiters/waitresses were always around, ready to top it off. The price was reasonable too. Not as cheap as one place I go to frequently but not as high as most small cafe/restaurants locally. I have returned three times in the weeks following my first visit. I can see this becoming my new favorite breakfast joint here in the RGV. Drop in and give them a try. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
