I was in the Zona Rio with time on my hands between dentist and endodontist, walking down side streets near the cool Mercado Hidalgo when I encountered Mariscos Hidalgo on Ave. Guadalupe Victoria. After some discussion with the owners and a customer enjoying his marlin and shrimp tacos, I ordered the caldo de pescado/fish soup. It came with chips, a fresh and spicy salsa verde, a generous pouch of fresh white corn tortillas, chopped onion, and cilantro. The fish was fresh and tasty, the broth was good, and the soup was exactly what I'd been craving. The meal was embellished by interesting conversations with the friendly owners. Prices are super-reasonable, the place is clean and bright and surprisingly quiet for its location, and I get the added pleasure of knowing I'm supporting a shoestring family operation eating there.
