From the time of my first contact, Roberto responded quickly and professionally to every request. He was able to come out to provide a quote late on the same day that I contacted him, and he made sure that we had enough tile to complete the job (we had purchased it almost two years ago and then procrastinated on hiring the tile installer, and we had gotten only just barely enough -- 15 subway tiles left at the end). He was prepared to discuss the schedule at that time, and it worked out that he was able to fit in our small job (with the help of his assistant) before he started work on another larger project the following week. Roberto was easy to work with throughout, texting back quickly whenever we had questions. Roberto also gave us good suggestions about the grout and schluter colors for the finish, and we love the way the finished project matches our cabinets. The work itself was very well done, as far as I can tell. I realize as I write this review that I can't compare and contract tile installers the way I would compare different restaurants. I've only ever hired one other (in the East Bay, more than a decade ago). I'm including a photo that I sent around to family to show them how beautiful it looks. As far as cost, Roberto's bid was the middle of the three quotes we received, but it was pretty close to the lowest bid. I had much greater confidence in Roberto from our interactions, so we selected his firm for the job. I will go directly to Roberto in the future if we have any tiling projects.

DO NOT HIRE!!!…read more Roberto tiled our shower and it looked beautiful initially. Then we noticed that he used brown grout to tile the top portion of our shower (to stick it to the wall). It seeped through and ruined the tile. He was literally too lazy to go to the store to get white grout. The bottom of the wall he tiled looks fine but the top portion is awful. This was clearly his mistake. I told him I'd even buy replacement tile but he needed to fix it. We haven't heard from him since. Zero integrity. Stay away!!!

Because I am indecisive, I have been waffling about our wood finish for quite a while and just needed to make a decision. I know Lamperti carried the line of cabinets we are going with and wanted to see if they had of the possible finishes I was lamenting about. Note our kitchen designers showroom is on the smaller size and he did not have that exact sample readily available. I was frank with Leslie and Beth at Lamperti, telling them that I would not be ordering cabinets from them, and yet they were more than happy to show me samples and take the time to explain to me pros and cons of my options. I left knowing exactly how I wanted to proceed and felt a weight had been lifted because I finally had made my decisions. The fact that Beth took as much time as she did with me, knowing that it would not result in a sale, to me, says a lot about the company.

There are several critical characteristics of an excellent contractor, competence, communication,…read moreflexibility, dedication, cleanliness, and personability. Westward Builders have them all. From my first communication with Trevor it was clear that Westward Builders are retaining wall and drilling experts and they understand the challenges of building in Marin County. They helped us choose the best wall for the application and location. In our case we needed to replace a deteriorated existing wall with something robust enough to support a new structure, but without significant disruption to the existing adjacent garage or sidewalk. Trevor suggested a wall that matched the existing design but was capable of handling the significantly larger surcharge. We got the wall we needed and the appearance we wanted. Although our building permit was ultimately approved without requiring engineering of our wall, it was great to know Westward Builders could engineer a retaining wall if needed. With their drilling expertise, Westward was able to drill our piers to county design specifications, other contractors we had bid for the job planned to use portable augers and just dig "as deep as we can". Trevor was responsive and let us know what to expect. He was flexible in scheduling our job when delays with another contractor required us to move the project start date back. The Westward crew was outstanding, they arrived on time, they were friendly, they kept the job site tidy, and they tucked their equipment out of the way at the end of the work day. When, during excavation, we discovered some unexpected dry rot in the lagging adjacent to the new wall, Trevor was able to replace it at no additional charge since the drilling was quicker than anticipated. Our job was finished as specified, on time and on budget. I would strongly recommend Westward Builders to anyone needing engineering, drilling, or retaining wall work done in Marin, especially for sites with challenging access. I plan to work with them again if we need any future engineering or retaining wall work.

The project to rebuild our deck took 6 months from beginning to end and ended up costing 50% more…read morethan the initial budget proposal. When this started, I thought it could get done in under 2 months. We had to expand the scope of the project so that was some of the additional cost, but man oh man - it went from $100K to $150K for a deck. In other parts of the country, that's enough to buy an entire home. It was not easy to get a hold of the contractor and I would have to text multiple times over multiple days to get a response. It got done and the deck looks good so I'm thankful for that. Sharing this here so that folks come into projects with eyes wide open to the fact that things take way longer and costs, which are already astronomical, are likely to be even higher when all is said and done.

We hired Make It Right Construction for a fairly extensive kitchen refacing of the cabinet doors…read moreand drawer fronts, building a new island, installing quartzite countertops, and replacing an existing oven and wine refrigerator with new drawers and cabinetry. The quality of the finished work was exceptional. The refaced cabinets are beautiful, the new island came out beautifully, and the quartzite fabrication and installation look terrific. The new cabinetry where the appliances had been blends seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. There was also some plumbing that needed to be redone along the way, and they took care of that as well. We especially want to recognize a few people. Ivan, the cabinet maker, did beautiful work. There were a lot of details in the cabinetry that mattered to us, and his craftsmanship and attention to those details really show in the finished kitchen. Manuel and Luis, who did the painting, were terrific as well. They were careful, meticulous, and clearly took pride in getting everything just right. In fact, that was our experience with the crew in general. Everyone who worked in our home was polite, considerate, accommodating, and as unobtrusive as you can reasonably be while tearing apart someone's kitchen. Whenever something needed adjusting or redoing, they took care of it and kept working until we were happy with the result. The one area where the experience could have been a little smoother was communication about scheduling. Since we stayed in the house during construction, it would have helped to have more advance notice about who was coming and when, and the project did take longer than we originally anticipated. But those were small inconveniences during the process rather than problems with the finished work. And the finished work is what we'll be living with for years. We couldn't be happier with it. The craftsmanship is excellent, the kitchen is beautiful, and when something wasn't quite right, they made it right. Five stars.

Impressive work and wonderful collaboration!…read more Make It Right Carpentry helped us replace our 30-year-old, 30 sq ft rotting wood landing with a 75 sq ft steel-frame deck of our own design. From initial consultation to final completion, we were impressed with how co-owners Wilber Sr & Jr worked with us to understand our options and to resolve challenges as they emerged (as they always do!). We were wowed when the crew took down our old landing in 25 minutes and planted solid footings for the new one in a matter of hours! We appreciated both Wilbers making sure we got the ideal railing for enjoying the view of our backyard. For family reasons we had to put off the work for four years. But Mike came back with the same price (even though there had been huge construction price inflation. He installed a series of Marvin windows on both floors of our Russian Hill condo. His crew was thorough, very professional, and took the time to do a great job. If you are considering getting good windows do it. The energy savings is worth it. But for us, on a relatively crowded corner - the noise reduction is outstanding. Really can't hear the nighttime drunks or bikers going by. Very strong recommendation for Mike Alioto, his team, and getting new widows. The second time I was adding a dormer, which required a window. I had a worthless architect who was not cooperating, but Mike stepped up and provided good advice (without being paid for it.) So cant recommend these guys highly enough.
