A man came out of the establishment screaming that I need to get off his property. I told you my plans and he said he doesn't care. I said you need to be nicer to people and he told me he doesn't want customers like me. I've never been treated this way by a store manager or worker anywhere. The vapes are straight-up fake -- burnt taste, weird packaging, codes that don't even scan, and flavors that taste like chemicals instead of anything real. I've gone a few times thinking maybe it was a bad batch, but nope -- every single one is garbage. And when I asked about it, they swore up and down that everything's "authentic." Yeah, okay. I wouldn't be surprised if they fill these things up in the back with Febreze and lies. Every time I walk in here, I feel like I'm entering a black market garage sale run by middle school dropouts. I've shopped at this store for over a decade. While it has often been overpriced and the customer service has never been especially warm, I continued to shop here because of the selection and my desire to support local businesses. Recently, however, I had an experience that changed that entirely. I arrived at the store to make a significant purchase for a large upcoming event, parking in the lot. I needed to quickly drop something off at a nearby shop, but would be returning within minutes to do my shopping. The parking lot was completely empty at the time, other than my vehicle. Before I was even a few steps from my car, the owner came running outside, aggressively shouting at me for parking there, stating that my car was stopping other people from being able to park. He spoke over me, refusing to listen as I calmly tried to explain the situation and that I was a long-time shopper there. I fully understand a business enforcing its parking rules, but given that I would be back immediately and clearly communicated my intention to buy, I expected some basic understanding and courtesy. Instead, I was repeatedly interrupted, dismissed, and told--quite bluntly--that he didn't care if I ever shopped there again. The interaction was unnecessarily hostile and deeply unprofessional. After reading previous reviews here, I see this is a clear pattern. I left without making a purchase and will not return. They could stand behind their high end wines instead of blaming bad wines on their distributors. They sell bad bottles and refuse to make right on them. I spent $700 on two bottles of wine, both of which were bad. When I tried to return them the proprietor refused to exchange or refund. MBO fell under new ownership less than a year ago to the sweetest, most knowledgeable guys, Monty and Aman. Since then, there has been a massive expansion on what they carry; non-alcoholic, food, legal mood-altering goodies, and rare wine/beer finds. The floors are always spotless, and the shelves are always dusted and stocked. I have been loyal to this place for many years, and will continue to be. I walked in and made a joke about a woman's dog outside and we had a laugh and a smile. Maybe the owner had a crush on the lady or something because after she was gone, and i was not interrupting them, I asked about their bitters selection. He said "that's all we have" in an off-hand way as to say "stop bothering me." Maybe I was reading too much into it. I continued to look around the store and asked the guy "which of these half bottles of wine is the best" and instead of inquiring what do I usually like or what I was looking for he just loudly and rudely yelled "I DONT KNOW WHAT VARIETALS YOU ARE EVEN LOOKING FOR?!" I politely and calmly asked him "Sir are you sure you want to help me today?" Here he could have said anything: "Sorry I've had a rough day." "Yes I would love to help you, let me ask you some questions about what you like to drink." "Not really I'm busy with some other things but please have a look around the store and see what you think you might like." Anything. Instead he told me to leave his store and never go back there. "You know what, why don't you just leave my store! i don't need your business." Because I asked two questions in two minutes I exhausted his potential for human interaction for the evening. Don't know what all the hype is about the owner, Charles. I've bought a few bottles of wine from here, a few cases of beer, and asked a few questions about such spirits. Each time I felt Charles wasn't in the mood to help because I did not purchase large quantities. Once, I asked for two empty cardboard boxes (wine cases for my move) along with the purchase of one bottle of wine. I figured I needed to grease the money monkey before inquiring such a high demand. He looked at me as if he was doing me a huge favor. Huge Favor. We're talking extraordinary. On the plus side, they do have a great variety of wines. I want to give this place a better review and rating but I cannot. We have been coming here since moving to san rafael over 2 yrs ago. As it is just down the street and carry my husbands favorite beer constantly. In the months prior to or wedding we worked with the owner on getting the kegs we wanted - both of which were special order. We were impressed that they were willing to go out of their way for this. But BUT - I wouldn't say he RUINED my wedding but he defiantly put my husband and groomsmen in a serious funk and panic to fulfill our needs. My husband took another of the groomsmen to get the kegs specifically because he was a keg delivery guy for the past several years and knows his shit and we don't and we didn't want to stress about not getting the proper equipment. Well turns out this is the worst/best thing we could have done. Worst - when our friend noticed that the keg tap wasn't properly working he pointed it out to the owner and asked for another tap. This sent the owner into a bit of a disgruntled mood. Best - upon further inspection when showing him what was wrong he found that there was copious amounts of mold growing in the tap. I can only imagine how disgusted this would have made me let alone the possibility of how sick it could have made our guest! After pointing this out the owner then started to boil and yell extreme profanities and slander at all of the guys. Telling our friend how he had now ruined our wedding ... which is silly and untrue. maybe for a bridezilla but not us. Luckily the guys were quick thinking and were able to achieve getting some last minuet kegs from the stellar ppl over at BevMo. I refuse to now go to this store and resist the urge to go in and be that "bridezilla" who wants to let the owner know he was a complete jerk and poor business owner. OHH my Goodness! I thought I might be the only one that believed the person who manages the store was rude. I thought he was being rude just because of the coronavirus scare. Some people BEST and WORSE behavior comes out in challenging times but I found I was mistaken. He does have an anal fixation with his parking lot. I see that in reviews spanning the last 4 years. He is not helpful and seems to make up his mind about a customer as soon as he lays eyes on him/her. His prices are a bit high (about 20% above average) and he thinks if you do not end buying something it means you parked for free. I can put up with his inflated prices. Sometimes supporting local businesses that are not part of a chain necessitates putting up with a bit of higher prices. But ornery and plain cantankerous behavior is a deal-breaker for me. Doesn't care about giving customers a good experience, just ready to take your money with his steep pricing. In addition to his unfriendly attitude, I went across the street and left my car in his parking lot for all of 5 minutes maximum, I come back to have him chastising me for parking in his lot while I'm not shopping in his store. This place is pretty well stocked with any type of spirit, beer, or wine you could want. I mean, rows upon rows of booze. If that's not enough for you, they even have a bar set up in the back (for real). I've come in here a few times, and I'm only interested in beer. They never disappoint. The back cooler is stacked to the brim with good suds, and of great variety. Prices are reasonable, too. I like to visit this place because it's like BevMo!, but locally owned. Win. read more

If you look confused Charles will help you decode the endless varieties of wine, tequila and liquor until you find your holy grail. This one time.. we needed a great tequila for a super snob motorcycle mechanic. Charles brought us to the back where we all (owner included) proceed to tequila taste for quite some time. I love the selection and the interaction. The man who runs this store is a real person, it's taken me a while to warm up to him but he's the real deal. The store may seem cluttered and the service (at first) unresponsive or even rude but the man knows what he is talking about. I love shopping local but I realize that shopping local means that the person who is running the establishment is their own boss and therefor doesn't owe you anything, they are real people. In fact, if you want impeccable service and invaluable recommendations, you need to be as patient and persistent as the owner is. Obviously they need customers to keep the business running, therefore if you want to buy a decent bottle of Chard, just pick one and pay but if you want the man to spend time and effort guessing what you love to drink then do him the favor of frequenting his store and get to know him. His sense of humor is about as dry as a 2004 Tuscan chianti but he's definitely worth getting to know. The gentlemen who runs the store knows what he is talking about, he's passionate about his selection and loves what he does. That's what makes his selection great, he's spent years researching, tasting and refining. The least we can do as customers is ask his opinion and really listen. The problem these days is that we think if we go into a store, willing to drop some money, we think that owners owe us their time. That's a perfect business model but if you want someone's attention and knowledge, be willing to pay for it...not just with cash. read more

I love Charles and company. He's extremely knowledgeable about all things alcohol and an all around great guy. There have been several times where I was inquiring about single malts or tequila and he advised me to try something which was less expensive than my initial choice. He's a true connoisseur who values taste and truth over all else. :) We can't really say the beer, wine, liquor is low-priced in Marin or the bay area in general, but his prices are very competitive compared to other stores in the same area. Some of my favorite beers are literally 1-2 dollars more expensive at Andronico's down the road and even Delanos in Fairfax(!!) Now if only Marin County (Mesa Brewing) would carry my favorite beer BLACK HAWK STOUT(!) It's readily available in Honolulu where I used to live but I can't friggin; find it an hour from the brewery?!? Charles asked for me though, as he's cool like that. The outside looks like a typical liqour store, but when my husband and I went in, the owner quickly greeted us and asked if we were looking for anything particular. We said no and continued to browse the selection. I thought the owner would hover around us, but he gave us space and came quickly when we needed something out of a locked case.
