I will say that I used to be a huge pizza lover but have toned down quite a bit over the years due to my dietary restrictions. However, once in awhile, I'll indulge in a yummy slice of heaven. This takes me to "Marilyn's Pizza" which has grown to be a huge late night spot dating back to late-2024. Located in the heart of the Boulevard Park neighborhood of Midtown Sacramento, this place is situated directly on J St. and tucked in between 20th/21st St's which is close to much of the entertainment and nightlife. Which is a good thing because they have very generous hours of operation being open Sunday through Thursday from 11am-2am with Friday and Saturday being open as late at 3am; well after the bars stop serving last call. I came here during the afternoon on Saturday 2/21/2026 at around 4:00pm. I figure this would be a late lunch/early dinner as I figure one slice would fill me up. After making the trek there (by foot), I made my way inside. As for the interior layout and space, there isn't much at all with the exception of the register and a large display case that showcases their 8 different varieties of pizzas. This includes cheese, pepperoni, sausage/pepperoni, combination, pesto, veggie, BBQ chicken, and Hawaiian. However, I believe they do not carry gluten free crusts but I could be wrong. You have your choice of ordering either a slice or a whole pie with prices being very reasonable. Since it was my first time, I kept things simple by going with one slice of their pepperoni (priced at a reasonable $6.50) that includes their house-made red sauce, Grande whole milk mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni slices. Total time from when I ordered to when I received my pizza was only about 5 minutes. Since I wanted to enjoy my pizza piping hot, I took advantage at one of their outdoor seating areas which has enough tables to seat a maximum of 12-15 guests. Since the weather was cooperative while not being too busy, I took full advantage of the opportunity. After receiving my slice of pizza and indulged into the first bite, I knew this was going to be delicious. The buttery crust was absolutely a winner as this has got to be the best tasting pizza I've had in Sacramento in a very long time. The cheese and pepperoni ratio also were spot on. I recently took a trip to New York/New Jersey (about 4 months prior to me writing this review) and will say that Marilyn's Pizza comes pretty darn close to the east coast flavor. Even the young man who helped me was very sincere and friendly during my visit. I will say that with the very generous hours, above average customer service, quaint location in the heart of Midtown, and very tasty pizza, I am giving "Marilyn's Pizza" a perfect five out of five stars. read more

Been here a few times and I can say they are really good. I like that you can buy pizza by the slice instead of a whole pizza. Prices are decent and won't break the bank. This is located on j street and open late (until 2-3 am usually). There's a few picnic tables up front, and inside has no room for seating at all. There's always customers here when I come here, which is a good sign. My last time here, I treated my cousin since we just came from a show at channel 24. He got 2 slices: cheese and pepperoni mushroom, and I got the special chicken pizza. Everything was really good. My pizza tasted "light", and not oily at all. We shared half the cheese since we were getting full for 2 slices. The cheese did taste good, but was definitely heavier. It's supposed to be New York style pizza, but I've never been to new York so can't compare. Still good to me. Costumer service was great. The hole-in-the-wall was the same style, the pizza by the slice was the same stlye, the taking my ordered slice and heating it up in the over was the same stlye. But the taste was not the same. Hands down my favorite pizza spot to date, in Sacramento, is Marilyn's. A crunchy crust and great sauce should be enough of a selling point, but the nice outdoor seating and consistency are key. It's so often that places are great the first time but drop the ball after, but each time I go to Marilyn's it's amazing. The husband and I stopped by one evening for a quick slice to split (he was def more hungry than I was but the slice is huge! So it worked out). [This is not a dine-in restaurant!!] They have a full display of their pizza pies that you can see right as you walk in, and if you're doing slices, you choose from there. They do put it back in the oven, so it comes out hot! If you're ordering a lot or with a big group, you're welcome to wait outside until your order is ready, and they'll bring it out to you. It was 11pm when we got there, and all the employees were extremely friendly and lively. I always commend anyone working late hours while still having great customer service, because I'll be the first one to tell you that it's hard to keep it up once late hours hit. We all loved our pizzas, they were the perfect size. Besides all the add ons they offer in the menu, they also have crushed red peppers and Parmesan cheese to prep your pizza on the table inside. This place is located in midtown, and if you know Sac, you know that the homeless camp at night on the sidewalks. It is a newer addition to the Sacramento pizza scene, and I first came here on a drunken night out, joining a long line of people for slices. The slice is expensive, and I was annoyed that they charged extra for a drizzle of hot honey, but I digress. I went for a cheese slice to stay consistent with my other reviews. It was not as good as drunken me remembered. There was barely any sauce at all, but the cheese was solid. The slice is huge, but also unevenly cooked. Crispy in parts but oddly doughy and soft in others, maybe from being par-cooked. For the price, it was not great. Again, if I were drunk, I would stop here, but sober me was not impressed. If you're looking for New York pizza in Sacramento, I think this is as close as we got. The vibes are immaculate - you will definitely feel like you're stepping into a pizza joint on the East Coast. The staff is friendly and patient. There isn't much space inside to queue so they may ask you to line up outside if there are too many people waiting. I've tried 9 pizza by the slice places in the Sacramento area. I visited Marilyn's a few times, trying the pesto slice, pepperoni, cheese and finally a combo. Final verdict - it's good, but kind of plain Jane. The crust is thin, crispy enough, but not flavorful. The sauce, as noted by other reviewers, is weak. It's there, but the flavor is so low it's not noticeable. The cheese. It's alright. The service has always been superb. Nothing to complain about. No indoor seating. You have to sit outside on picnic style benches. Pizza By the Slice is ultra competitive in downtown Sacramento. There are many good options within walking distance. Marilyn's is ok. It has good hours, but it needs to bump up the flavor level of it's pizza to convince to to return. Note- My kid likes it, but she prefer low flavor food, so that's not an endorsement unless you're looking for pizza your kid will like. read more

The restaurant interior is for ordering only, so you should be prepared to sit outside or find your way to a car to eat in. It's off 20th and J down the street from the bars/clubs so it's convenient when you want some late food when you're already out. They haven't been open a super long time but they've made adjustments on how to make things run smoother. For example, they recently added a designation line and a sign stating "one customer in, one customer out". I think this is a good idea because they get really really busy! They have a decent sized menu with standard pricing for pizza in midtown. If you just want a slice you can come at any time but ordering whole pies should be done ahead of time if you can to avoid long waits (up to an hour). The pizza is good but I prefer other spots. The crust is great but the cheese isn't my favorite. They have a refrigerator full of drinks, only outdoor seating, and nice staff. Definitely recommend to try at least once. It was 1:00 a.m. on Christmas morning. Presents were wrapped, the house was quiet... and then it hit me: I needed pizza. Not tomorrow pizza. Right-now pizza. They actually answered the phone professionally, kindly, and without any "why are you calling at 1 a.m?" attitude. They explained their ordering system, gave me prices for slices and whole pies, and even invited me in to order in person (even though online is usually "the best way" and they don't normally take phone orders). That alone deserves applause. And the pizza? Absolute home run. Fresh, not greasy, soft crust, perfectly cooked and let's talk about the 20-inch size. I heard about this pizza joint from a friend and was told I should give it a try. The mom and pop joint is a small establishment with a very simple menu. The pizza was freaking delicious: thin crust, slightly burnt bottom and crust with a good ratio of bread, sauce and toppings. Deep flavor in every bite! Would definitely come back. I'd love to have had the option for veggie on the selection and I would have liked to have one white sauce to choose from. They had pesto which didn't look amazing but i'd be interested to know how it taste. Bright inside a little small once another couple walks in. There is benches outside you can sit on which will be great for people out later. A pizza can be ordered and split in half they are big and yes you can order how you want it which all is a extra charge - keep that in mind with that in mind expensive I'd love to see a 3-4 topping pizza of your choice with a price given. Been wanting to try this hype and finally had the chance! We came around 8pm, and it was packed with people. The shop is tiny, so there weren't any tables inside, but plenty of outdoor seating! The space had an open kitchen concept, so we were able to see full view of staff prepping, baking and reheating the pizzas. I like the decor and design of the shop as well, gives it a classic pizza place look. The staff were kind and welcoming. The service was excellent. We got the pesto slice (+ added pepperoni) and sausage and pepperoni slice. The slice size and texture of the pizza was good!
