I have never written a one start review. Never less than 4 actually. My friend and I had to go there because City Diner, What's Brewin' and Stephy's had lines out the door. When we entered Marika's there were only 2 groups there. One had 2 small kids, and was the recipient of many awful looks and comments. When we got there we moved a table to be able to get in and was told that wasn't allowed to do. She had worked here 21 years and this is not where that table goes. After we ordered coffee she revisited the subject and told us not to do that again. She wouldn't stop, so I said "oh I just got a call, we need to go. I'm sorry we won't be having coffee after all, have a great day." She was an older woman and she said loudly "I know you didn't get a call you just don't like what I said to you." She shouted at us while we were leaving, all the way to the door. "You don't need to be here, we don't need you here. You don't understand how this is." This is so disappointing. read more

A cute and kind German family owns this place and it's a no-frills breakfast diner in the heart of Beverly. I've come here a couple of times and have enjoyed it quite a bit. They don't accept credit cards which can be quite an inconvenience but the food is tasty. I ordered a goat cheese omelet special with artichoke and it was divine. The home fries were cooked perfectly and if I were any hungrier, I may have ordered more. The main waitress is super personable and while a bit chatty at times, she makes you feel welcomed and likes to personally get to know her patrons. We'll start with the good. The food was excellent. The owner and her mother were very personable and friendly - as if we were eating at their house - great customer service! The atmosphere was nice - very Greek Diner-ish (the owner is half Greek - she told us - twice. Lots of locals (I'm a local and I've been here once before and had a similar experience as outlined below). It was very inexpensive - way less than I had expected - the 2 of us ate (pancakes, orange juice, hash and eggs) for $12.50. Now the bad. We (a party of 2) walked in to a full restaurant (no issue there - in fact, that usually means it'll be a great dining experience!). We were seated quickly (also a sign of good things to come). But after we were seated it took 30 minutes to get one of us an orange juice (we ordered 1 each) and the other came after 2 different people came by to ask us what we wanted and we told them 3 times... then after 10 minutes someone brought a duplicate orange juice - so now we had 3 and then they took our food order. 10 minutes later, my companions food came. 35 minutes later, my food came. It turns out - the reason the restaurant was full was because no one was getting their orders... there were just a bunch of tables with people sitting at them waiting for coffee, breakfast, napkins, menus, etc. As folks left, the owner and her mother apologized to each one of them for the long wait and gave a different reason for it to each one of them. This happened the first time I was there too (a while ago). So - in all - the food and customer service was excellent, but the organization of the staff needs serious work. read more

Looked all over the area for a quiet Mom and Pop style breakfast stop and came across Marika's. Quirky little place... at first they weren't sure they could get the 5 of us at one table. But we managed just fine. The food was excellent and the hostess was a wonderful German woman who was super pleasant and accommodating. This is a really interesting joint. Quirky and full of local character, and the food was very good. Pancakes, French toast, "Buzzy" sandwich, no one had any complaints. Apparently it is 100% family run. There was a bit of a language barrier at one point, which resulted in my nephew getting only one pancake when he wanted two, but we chalked it up to an interesting experience and ordered another one. Speed of service was not their strength, so I'm glad we weren't in a hurry. But I will go back sometime for a leisurely breakfast. read more

Cabot Street and me, we're just getting to know each other. I've driven along it hundreds of times, yet only recently exited my vehicle to see what it has to offer. Enter: Marika's. I first visited with my husband right before xmas, meeting friends who were big fans of the place. I was pleased/impressed to see that they were obviously known by the owners, and I love that caring interest -- that /actual/ interest -- that the best business owners have towards their clientele. It's totally a home-style joint in the best possible way. Since then I've been in a handful of times for breakfast and today for lunch, and the food's been consistently good, nourishing, and obviously cooked with care... But today, today I looked up at the specials board and saw goulash beaming back at me..! And it was as good as the goulash I lived on when I was in Vienna for a week, and I sort of wish I'd gotten a second order for takeout so I could be eating it right now. Sigh. read more

The staff was good, though a bit disorganized and the restaurant was relatively clean. When my food arrived (French Toast and Sausage) it was stone cold and had this "sauce" on it that had the consistency and color of chocolate milk...When I sent it back I could hear the cook moan...so hopefully it this isn't the norm. At the end of the meal I expected to see my meal removed from the bill for all the trouble...when I got the bill it was there...in fact I was over charged by .50 cents.... I wasn't going to complain about this because ensuring customer satisfaction after an incident falls upon the shoulders of the management. I will not be visiting Markia's again...I will stick to the Depot Diner in Beverly, Brother's in Danvers, and George's in Gloucester. read more

Holy smokes batman...you should have seen the size of my meal at Marika's!! Because there was enough food on my plate too feed three burly lumberjack men. But thankfully I have the freakish stomach size of professional eater. My amazing breakfast platter came with three eggs, a monster load of hash browns, steak(covered in gravy) and side plate of potatoes. My breakfast platter was so massive it had to be lowered with the help of a building crane. I couldn't believe my eyes because it was like love at first site. My CFS was the perfect size(not to big not to small) and the gravy that covered my glorious CFS was seasoned to perfection. I can gladly say those hash browns I had that morning were thee best I have ever had. Because they weren't greasy and must of have been made by heavenly angels. I opted for sunny side eggs and even those were amazing. The side plate of potatoes and gravy were just a added bonus. In fact I even shared them with M'lady because sharing is caring! Believe me if you roll up to Marika's and see a line you know why. Because their food is simply amazing and so are their prices. I couldn't believe that meal was under $10. For the quantity and quality of my breakfast I would have gladly paid more...a lot more! My friend Bethany and I came here nearly every day one summer. We made friends with Marika and love the gossip she'd spin for us. She'd talk about her night at Kitty's or the 23 y/o chasing her--what fun! She told me I could order the french toast vegan, but after a few times eating it I think she was mistaken. I'm pretty sure they use powdered egg, which is actually made from eggs but are not fresh. I am not one of those vegans who gets all fussy over mistakes--so after ordering it three times in a row I marked it on my Oops, and ordered the oatmeal or something. I'd still go to Marika's as they have a fun staff, veggie burgers and fake sausage (could have egg, as it tastes like morning star), its just one of those places that you can feel at home, even if the food is not 100%. read more

The rule for having a really good Marika's experience is don't go during a busy time. Pretty simple rule. You will be tempted to break this rule but don't. We go during the week when we happen to have a day off. We always get stellar service and our food is done right. That being said, Marika is the epitome of the stereotypical (archetypal?) German grandma. That is to say, don't expect special treatment, you might be the customer, but clearly, you are not always right. Do not ask for substitutions or extra plates for splitting your meal. Read the damn menu and comprehend it. It is what it is, no exceptions. Leave your special snowflake status at the door. If you cop an attitude, you will get it back. You want to split your meal? Get it to go. Realize that if you break the rule for a good Marika's experience that you will experience long waits, 45 min to an hour is not unheard of, longer on holiday weekends. Also be aware that the quarters are tight, they have seating for 36, but holy crisco, it's jammed packed. If you don't like crowds, eat outside or get the food to go. When following the only rule, the food is good and service is good. The hash is really good and made in house with real corned beef, and you can tell. They make it fresh everyday. The coffee is dark roast and strong. It tastes as though she keeps those press pots sparkling clean. Though the place looks a little weathered it was very clean. The prices are high but not out of this world, and not much higher than anywhere else in Beverly. read more

I felt like I was eating brunch in a posh hotel in New York. the food was really, really good.
