I never write reviews but I just had to because service here was sooo bad. We were so excited to try this place since it was voted Best of LI. Unfortunately it had to be the worst experience we had in a long time. The service was just completely awful. We went for lunch and thank god we didn't have to get back to work because the waiter/waitress disappeared and/or did not check on us for at least 20 mins after we completed our meal. We were going to get dessert but because it took so long we didn't. I could see the bar area where I was sitting and saw the waiter make a drink for a patron in the dining area and instead of pouring out the excess he drank it. As far as the food..Just a bunch of cheese on a plate...no taste. The tortilla chips were good. read more

I got the cheese enchilada, beef burrito, and chicken taco meal. It was adequate but nothing tasted great. Girlfriend got some steak dish with rice and beans and didn't really eat the meat, just the vegetables and a little rice. The meat was chewy she said. I've eaten at Maria's several times and it is by far my favorite Latin American food in the area. Plus they put a giant sombrero on your head if it's your birthday. The food and drinks are very well done and the service is always attentive. The only thing I'd really complain about is the parking, but there are plenty of spaces at neighboring businesses. read more

One of my favorite places for Mexican food on Long Island. I highly recommend trying this place if you like Mexican food. It is worth the trip. I recently went for a date night dinner after not coming for a few months and realized that I really need to come more often. The food is excellent. I never ordered anything that I didn't like. Ropa vieja, empanadas, skirts steak and fajitas are all very good. They usually have several interesting specials and also have combination plates if you are having a hard time deciding what to order or want to try a few different things. Although I typically like a nice cold pilsner or lager beer with Mexican food, I do enjoy the margaritas here. This evening I took my family to Maria's restaurant and it was a complete disaster. The waiter was not patient as well as rude. When she took our order and brought us our food one of the plates had hair in it. Not only did that dissatisfied us but also made us very disappointed because they also forgot one of our side dishes. I came at this restaurant with a group of 10 from work and we enjoyed ourselves. The ambience right out of the bat asked for a margarita and every one in the table agreed so we ordered a pitcher. The appetizers were delicious especially the fried bananas. I ordered a seafood paella that was fantastic. The only critique I have is that the guacamole we ordered was too small and the salsa was very industrial and was not tasty. Other than that, great restaurant. read more

Neighborhood restaurant. Been meaning to go for years and finally got in. Well, we won't be going back. I got the Chilean shell steak. They use a very substandard grade of beef. Steak was difficult to cut and I had to literally saw thru it. Flavor was meh.. the wife got the fish tacos. Each taco wrapped in 3 soft shells and there was more shell than stuffing. The good news? I took my boyfriend out here last Sunday around 6:30pm for dinner. The wait to get a table wasn't bad at all. If you have a group of 5+ you can make a reservation. The staff seemed nice but our waiter didn't seem that interested in talking to us. He didn't bother to explain any of the specials to us but he had no problem explaining it to everyone else there. I thought that was weird but shrugged it off since we had read it on the board when we walked in. The rest of the waitstaff were very nice to us though...so that was also a bit off-putting. They even came by to stir our sangria and pour more into our glasses and were very attentive with our water glasses. The whole bill was around ~$100 or so for a small pitcher of sangria, 1 pina colada, 1 aquacate relleno, 1 papa rellena, 1 lechon Cubano, one of the specials on the board (sorry, can't quite remember the name), 1 coffee and an order of chocolate flan. The food was delicious with a few bumps. The avocado and shrimp in the aquacate relleno was delicious. Their avocados are perfectly ripened and the shrimp was cooked well. I didn't enjoy the papa rellena as much as the aquacate relleno because it was a lot more potato than meat. At least the sauce they serve with the papa rellena was good. The sangria had far too much ice in it and made the sangria watery. The pina colada was great because it didn't feel like I was trying to drink frozen thick slush through a straw. The lechon Cubano was amaaaaaaaaaazing guys. Absolutely delicious. The meat was soft and juicy. The way it was seasoned is probably as authentically-tasting as you could probably get it. They give you a good portion of rice (as in the dish is not mostly rice!) and the platano maduro (they only gave me 6 pieces...) was the perfect level of ripe and fried! My boyfriend enjoyed the chocolate flan immensely, however I am not a big fan of flan so I can't comment on it. The coffee with steamed milk was a nice finish to the meal! Honestly I would have given this a 4 star rating if the waiter seemed to give a damn about us and if we didn't have to wait for so long for our food and drinks... I am honestly wary of going back just because of this. There were far larger tables than us and they had gotten their food before us. Even another table of 2 people were seated after us, got their food before us, and left before us. It took about about 2 hours and change to come in, eat and pay the bill. I would still give this place a try if you haven't already. I would also add that the "parking" lot is....not really a parking lot. There's more parking behind the building though albeit a bit awkward to get to. read more

The menu offers a variety of mexican classics ranging from tacos to paella, but the real draw comes from behind the bar where they use fresh fruit to skillfully mix sangria, margaritas, and other cocktails. The staff is more than attentive and always there to refill your empty glass. After all the delicious drinks don't forget to check out the bathroom...it's worth a peek. I'm actually pretty disappointed with the service this past time. Me and my family use to come here all the time and rave about them and their food. We always came for birthdays and enjoyed ourselves. Food ALWAYS on point. Unfortunately I don't know if we'll return after our last experience. Regardless of COVID, you don't rush people to spend money and run out when YOU were the ones backed up and what not. We sat down and the first thing they said was, "just so you know, you have a 90 minute sitting period then you have to leave". Now that's all good and dandy if your trying to make your money back and don't want people lingering I get that. But when it took YOU over an hour to give us our food that was on YOU, not our fault. So then you made sure you let us know AGAIN we didn't have much time left and had to leave soon so we had to rush and eat. What an uneasy feeling. That was so wrong on so many levels. I even felt our waitress felt a little uncomfortable telling us because they kept pointing to us and telling her to tell us. I was mind blown at how they handled themselves. How are you going to tell people to leave when they are spending good money to come out and eat/drink and enjoy themselves. After all of the bad going on in the world right now a lot of people now look forward to going out to eat and you pull that?? No, I'm sorry. We would've kept ordering drinks until we were done but because we only had a short amount of time left we wrapped it up and left. Shame on you. ***Delicious Latin American Food in an Unassuming Location*** As others have remarked, this is a small place; a rectangular dining room with tables on the edges...with a slow pace of dining it would seem this would limit how much they can bring in. Anyway, onto the food: Dishes I tried: Mofongo (appetizer): AMAZING! To be fair, I've never had mofongo before (or even heard of it before reading its description), but wow did this set the bar high. It's base was made of fried green plantains with chopped pieces of dried pork. These green plantains aren't the super sweet kind, which would have drowned the taste of the dish. The pork was delicious among the juicier plantains. While it doesn't look like anything special from the outside (think of thanksgiving turkey stuffing), eating it was addicting. We were tempted to get another order. Unfortunately, this was offered as a nightly special. If they include it on the regular menu, I will be back. Papa rellena (appetizer): Delicious. Potato was oh-so-soft on the inside and the beef inside was moist and delicious. Well done version of a classic dish. Paela Vallenciana: This was really good. Yeah, they aren't using the highest-end ingredients but it was made very well, tasty, and we're not in the city afterall so this checked out just fine with me. Also the portion was huge (especially after appetizers + chips&salsa). It's a big bowl with the seafood mingling on the outside and the meat mixed within the bowl, giving the rice/vegetable mixture a complex flavor due to the meat's juices. For paela, I would go for the vallenciana instead of paying five bucks more for the seafood only version. Lechon Cubano: The roast pork was delicious. Plantains were also excellent. Also learned that "moros and christianos"= beans and rice in Cuban cuisine... This was great but less special of a dish/less of a novelty than the other ones I tried, but it is a great safe pick if you are unsure what to get (and then you can be adventurous with an appetizer!). As I alluded to earlier, unlimited chips and salsa as well as some rolls are served as complimentary appetizers. Yes, as others have noted, the salsa isn't the fanciest in the world, but I enjoyed it. It's pretty sweet with just enough spice to give it a nice little kick but not enough to limit the amount you eat. So. Why only 4 stars? I called ahead and they said there would be a 30 minute wait. They then said we would be first on the list? After explaining we weren't far from where we were calling from, they actually said we weren't first on the list at the time (I think third) but that it would be about 30 minutes. Thanks for being honest *sarcasm*. Needless to say, we were in the restaurant seated within ten minutes of calling so this wasn't a big deal. Also, I'm 95% sure they forgot our order. After a long time after finishing our appetizers our waiter kind of stared at our table, like, "they have been here for a long time, I wonder why...oh, they were just eating their appetizers...uhhh...CRAP" 15 minutes later our food came (longggg after we ordered). Food was still delicious and they kept bringing out fresh chips, so not a huge deal, but its not like they tried to make amends or even acknowledged the long wait. Hopefully our forgotten order was just an aberration, since I would really like to like this place. FINAL VERDICT: Appetizers are delicious; get the mofongo if available. Don't expect the most authentic version of the dish you order, but the food is great with many specials offered from all over the Spanish-speaking world. Recommended. read more

So under normal circumstances, Maria's has been one of my favorite places to eat. The service is always wonderful and the food is always amazing. Tonight I called in advance to see if they still have indoor seating available for my wife and I. I live about 40 minutes away and the woman who answered the phone said there was availability for 2 and that they closed at 11pm. Me and my wife showed up at 10:05 to be exact to not even be greeted and just given a dirty look as if we were doing something wrong by coming in at that time. I asked to be seated and got ping ponged around from employee to employee for someone to come tell the host in Spanish "well no, we are closed and that's it". There were still plenty of people eating and we even saw someone just getting their food. My wife and I were so turned off that we decided to just walk out and drive a few miles up the road to come to Margaritas Cafe who greeted us with a smile on their face and had no issues with providing us the service we deserve as paying customers. Once again, Maria's has always been my go to place and I absolutely love their food but tonight, some of that staff dropped the ball! Very disappointing!! read more

Every time I go to Maria's I wonder why I don't go more often. After all, it's like 2 miles from my house and 1 mile from my office but it's been at least 3 years now. I guess that's the whole point of restaurant week...it got me back in the door. Everything was delicious last night. We started with chicken empanadas and moqueca de camarones. The empanadas were perfectly fried, the shell had a nice little crunch on the outside and was soft and doughy on the inside along with the delicious chicken filling. The avocado hot sauce is a bit misleading because it's more like a cilantro hot sauce with a little avocado, but good nonetheless. The moqueca de camarones was outrageously delicious with big, tender shrimp in this wonderful coconut broth. The broth was so good that we dipped our bread in it to soak up every last drop. Dinner was chuleta cubana and tampiquena marinera. If you like cuban sandwiches, the chuleta cubana is for you. It's like Maria's modern, more elegant interpretation. No bread, just a stuffed pork chop with ham, manchego cheese and pickles...fabulous. The tampiquena marinera is tender and flavorful skirt steak topped with shrimp, scallops & calamari in a chipotle sauce. There was a great smokiness to the steak and the seafood was cooked perfectly. Loved it. The star dessert was the sweet plantain sundae. The fry of the plantains was so good that if my eyes were closed I would've thought I was eating a churro. The strawberry margarita pie was good as well, but not as good as the sundae. All in all, great meal at a great restaurant week price. Now I just have to remember to go back some time. read more

I am in shock I have not tried this place before. A few derby friends mentioned to me about this place saying it is so good. Thank goodness it was someone birthday and they planned it at this place, because I probably would have not experience this place out. I ordered myself the carne asada entrée. It came with two decent size of thin slice of cow meat that was covered with corn and cheese. ALL THAT CORN N CHEESE! it covered the whole thing that I didn't realize it came with two slice of meat. IT also came with rice and beans and fried something. That fried thing I didn't care much for but everything else with hot sauce was amazing. I filled up my rice and beans covered with hot sauce and covered my steak/corn cheese with hot sauce.
