This is a fully stocked bookshop with tons of books including bestsellers right on Durango's Main Street. It has regular bookstore prices too (like the price you'd see listed on any book). This is an amazing little bookshop in a really cool town. This was my first visit to Durango as a whole, and I really loved the vibe of this town. It had a very laid back, liberal, Colorado feel, and Maria's was no different. This is a cozy little shop right on the main drag, stocked with best sellers, local authors, toys and gifts. For a small store, they make up the difference with floor to ceiling shelves, and the staff use sliding ladders to reach the high books, which fulfilled all of my Beauty and the Beast library fantasies. In the summers, they host some local author signings on the street. Staff was super friendly and helpful, and you can tell everyone there loves books! read more

Cute little wooden floor place in Durango along the main street. I liked looking at the puzzles and the little nooks toward the back of the store. Everywhere you look you're eyes are on overload. This is the type of bookstore that I wish I saw more often. To start with, at the very entrance to the store, there is a section of local maps, including trail guides and resources for the surrounding area. More importantly, there is an excellent selection of books of an eclectic variety. It is clear that the staff cares a great deal- the staff recommendations that you see littered among the shelves track with the types of books that I enjoy reading and/or that I have on my list of "must reads." In addition, I overheard several conversations between staff and customers; this is the type of bookstore where you can ask the staff for a book that is "you know, a dystopian thriller, but fast paced" and they can come up with a recommendation for you. (As an aside, as someone who long ago worked in a bookstore, there is nothing more annoying than having someone come in and ask, "Hey, do you have that book that they covered on NPR? You know, it was like a week ago? Or two weeks? I think it was fiction?" Help the staff help you!) In today's world of people ordering from Amazon and online, we forget the serendipity that comes from browsing bookshelves and interacting with people. This is the type of thoughtful local business that deserves support. After all, we randomly went in after dinner one night, and emerged with four great books! read more

Maria's Bookshop is a one-of-a-kind bookshop that you must visit when you are in Durango! We went there tonight and received SUPERB service from Leah (helping my hubby find a map he so desperately wanted) and Helen sweetly offering to wrap our books that we purchased as gifts for our kiddos. They have something for EVERYONE there, it certainly did not disappoint. The decor is so authentic to the area and they even have the old school "library ladders" that go from floor to ceiling so you can reach any book you need. I wanted to stay in there for another hour because there is just so much to look at. Don't forget to visit this sweet lil gem! read more

Maria's Bookshop is a cool and welcoming independently owned establishment that has been serving the Durango community since 1984. Now isn't that date also the title of a book? I wandered in a few Friday's ago and enjoyed the welcoming "shotgun" (long and narrow) interior, books well-organized from top to bottom, friendly staff, and maybe a K9 pal or two. I came away with a 2011 Moleskin Calendar (Monthly) and a nice map of where I had spent a good part of my last 2 weeks. I actually came in twice as an out-of-order bathroom had me seeking relief elsewhere. If I lived in Durango, this community bookstore is where I would often be for a chat, a read, a listen, or a doggy treat. read more

Oh, we had the best time at Maria's. We stopped in just before Christmas, killing time before going to see the new Star Wars movie. It was the best time killer ever. We enjoyed the local Durango selection and their kid section was TDF. The guy checking us out was knowledgable and friendly, and he told us that there was free gift wrap service at the back of the store. So off we went to get our presents wrapped. The lady gift wrapping was also friendly and chatty, and I got a chance to visit the best public restroom I have ever used in 45 years. It was homey, immaculate, and they had a soap that smelled like heaven. Seriously, if any place ever deserved five stars because of their delightful bathroom, it's Maria's. They were just unwrapping a huge plate of tasty homemade cookies and treats as we were gathering our wrapped presents. Such a great reminder of why independent retailers are the BEST. We found 3-4 more unique things while we were waiting and left with a thinner wallet and heavy, heavy bags. So happy to have found this place. Thank you!! read more

I visited this bookstore this evening and received a welcoming greeting by one of the Owners. The store is authentic for the area and was entertaining to browse. I had 2 purchases in hand and placed them back on the shelf when I noticed some of the content available in the store was extremely Liberal regarding politics, gender, ethnicity, etc. By not offering content with opposing views only aids in conditioning it's customers / readers toward narrow minded viewpoints. This is a private business so the Owners can do what they like. The 4 stars is an honest review because there's no reason to knock a family business. read more

Lovely bookstore, great fiction section and real attention to locally relevant books, helpful staff, and just lots of nooks and crannies and stationery and fun things to look at. I think the kids' section is a little thin, but maybe that's just because I never know what kids like. I have shopped here twice since Covid hit and want to say how great their measures are. They only let a few people in at a time, everyone is masked and sanitizes hands, and they've got curbside pickup if you order online. This is the only place I really feel safe holiday shopping right now, and I'm so happy to support an independent bookstore. read more

One is much more likely to go out of their way to write about a bad experience, than a simple review for an adequate one. Unfortunately, Ive been disappointed in Maria's enough to hunt down my Yelp password to write this one. I love their product (books, are great, right?) and the atmosphere. If they don't have what you want, then they can order it for you. So as a bookshop, it serves it's purpose. A lot of people have mentioned the "friendly staff" but I have to wonder if they are talking about a different store. It's they only bookshop in town, and we all want to buy local, so I've been in there many times in the last year. Every time I've walked into Maria's Bookshop, I've left feeling belittled by one or more of the staff. Look, I get it. You work in a local book shop. You probably read a lot. You're probably super smart, and super hip, and know why anything I ask about or buy is super dumb. But for the love of the money I spend in your store - wipe that smug look off your face. read more

This is what a bookstore should be - welcoming, warm, intimate, and well-stocked in its specific sections. And the staff is nice, too. Maria's is on Main Street in Durango and caters quite a bit to the tourists, of which I was one. Sections near the front of the store focus on outdoor activities in Colorado, the history of Colorado and the region, and western history in general. The rest of the store has the usual sections, such as categories of fiction and nonfiction. I enjoy seeing the employee reviews/recommendations, and I bought a book called "The Last Gunfight" based on a staff recommendation. When I went to purchase it, the guy who recommended it handled the sale, and we had a pleasant, short conversation about the book and other Western histories we liked. Definitely worth a visit while you're in Durango. By the way, I absolutely loved "The Last Gunfight" and highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in the real history of the West and some of its most famous names.
