I can't begin to say enough positive and loving things about this store, and its wonderful owner…read moreDorothy (hence the name!). I have been buying books here for years, and have never found a better selection of tomes about spirituality, consciousness, awareness, astronomy, and other "New Agey" topics in a store this small, anywhere. At first glance it seems like a typical little crystal/bookstore place, but closer examination reveals a surprisingly solid selection of some of the classic spiritual texts, often used, and at truly fair prices. I have found some of the best books I have ever encountered about life here, and usually at a quarter of their original prices. Dorothy is not here to get rich; she is here to provide a true public service to those aware enough to seek the wisdom of history's greatest minds in figuring out why we're here and how to live a life of integrity and intelligence. She has given me so many great deals, and always with her wonderful smile and great vibe. It has always amazed me that I can never find mention of this place on goole or anywhere, and no one ever mentions it here in town. Dorothy and her husband have been running this place for decades, and apparently it has remained a well-kept secret. I hope this review can change that, as I can think of no one else in town who better embodies the Durango spirit than these two lovely folks. Their bumper stickers are also hilarious! Humor and wisdom go hand in hand... God bless you guys, and Buddha and Allah and Zoroaster too! You have brought a lot of love and light to our little slice of heaven, and I know I'm but one of many who are truly grateful that Under The Rainbow lives on as a beacon of intelligence in Durango.

Colorado mountain towns almost always have tourist-trap stores that our family says "have gone the…read moreway of the rubber tomahawk". One can just hear the cry of the famous Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta turning in their graves. The Buckskin more than offsets a lot of the tourista trash. Via architectural fortune, the Buckskin has the honor of being located on the ground floor of the AMAZINGLY well-restored Beaumont Hotel (the lobby is up a beautiful set of stairs leading to the 2nd floor). Ouray and the surrounding area are fantastic (e.g. hiking 14er Mt. Sneffels, camping where people cannot find you off of Imogene Pass, a killer hot springs pool), but unfortunately, Ouray also has its fair share of sloppy homely-cousin kitsch (the ubiquitous glass hummingbirds and t-shirts with the usual unfunny slogans). The Buckskin is a great place to walk in and peruse for local history - in a classy but friendly environment. The Beaumont itself is a great story - look it up online. It will make even the worst curmudgeon smile. Recipe for a great day in Ouray: go for a nice draining hike; take in the hot springs; eat a great dinner - then head to the bookstore before crashing. The only downside to the Buckskin is it's not very big. However, no book (in the Buckskin or elsewhere) will prepare you for the adrenaline pumping, no highway rail ride from Ouray to Silverton (and Durango)! If you bring out-of-staters, make sure you also bring some Depends.

I went into this store to find a specific book I had seen elsewhere. They had the book I wanted,…read moreand many more books about Colorado, CO mining, the Old West, 4x4ing, and anything else you might want about Colorado. They also had the most popular books you might be looking for while in Ouray. If you're on vacation, and need a book, this is the place to go. The owner is very friendly, but also knows how to stay back and let you browse. It's the perfect bookstore for a Colorado mountain town.

The new owner Pat is not only super friendly but he and his staff are very well versed in helping with all things reading and books. I found a collectible Jane Austen book that is almost too pretty to read. Ouray Books has moved from the Beaumont to 6th Street under Mouse's Chocolate shop. It is THE perfect location as it is a cozy hidden gem and Pat has done an amazing job making it welcoming and cozy.. Make sure and stop by to get books to read for your vacation, some to take home or collectibles to enjoy. One thing that I loved is that you can contact Pat or his staff with any book you are looking for and they cab order it for you! Much more personalized service for all your reading needs. There were not only rare book finds but also many unique gifts. A bonus is to walk around the shop and read the poems on the wall. Pat the owner of the book shop is the Poet behind them! Priceless Bookshop in a Fairytale Town such as Ouray is.

We had SUCH a great experience at Ouray Bookstore! Now this may seems like an overly ecstatic…read moreresponse to a visit to a bookstore, and normally I would agree. But this place blew us away! First of all, we walked in and saw the most beautiful bookstore we have ever been in. It has all been recently redone and looks fabulous. There is a wide selection of books, from bestsellers to local authors to children's books to cookbooks to guide books. There is also a variety of cute little gifts, greeting cards, and stickers. So far so good, it was a beautiful store with a great selection of books and other goods. What took it over the top was that the owner offers coffee to drink while you browse the books and FRESH BAKED COOKIES his wife had brought in (they were delicious). The owner was extremely friendly and helpful if we had any questions about the books or Ouray in general. We had a great experience and would definitely recommend a visit to tourist and local alike!
