Mariano's seems to be going downhill. Produce usually is in bad shape, moldy, or rotten. And the selection throughout the whole store is not as good as it used to be. They should really change their name since they sold out and are not actually Mariano's anymore. read more

The Mariano's in Gurnee just opened July 1st and I have been there twice. Like the other reviewers, I will be taking my business either to the one in Vernon Hills or to Walmart. The first visit on day one was nice. It definitely does look like the old Dominck's, so I was unimpressed. I signed up for a Mariano's card, and got some Gelato. No big deal. I got an email the next day for E-clip coupons. I thought "Sweet. Just add coupons to your Mariano's card - no mess with clipping." I go to buy my items that same day. The cashier had no idea what I was talking about. She asked another cashier who then referred me to the customer service desk. I spoke with a gentleman there at 9:30am, and told him about the email. He told me "If you read your email correctly, you'd know that we don't do that. You have to print them out." So basically, their employees don't know about their own company. He could have been honest and just said they weren't set up for that yet. Instead, he had to have the worst attitude and act like a prick. First impressions are everything Mariano's. And the one in Gurnee is awful. Don't waste your time. read more

This Mariano's is very similar to the Dominick's that it replaced, but that is to be expected considering their respective history. This location looks constrained by the space they are in, but still manages to bring greater variety, fresher produce, fresher meats, fresher fish, etc... than any other local grocery store. Jewel and Walmart are trying to do the same, but their quality doesn't match Mariano's. Employees are easy to find, and are helpful, while at Jewel and Walmart employees look bitter and almost angry most of the time. This location does a good job at bringing Mariano's to gurnee, and I will shop here over Jewel and Walmart now. read more

Went into Mariano's to pick up beer for the game. Opened up the cooler and beer from the top shelf comes flying out & busted right @ my feet ruining my white jersey. Incident reports were filled out & surveillance tape reviewed proving that Mariano's was in fact responsible. Their claim dept. has been sending me on a goose chase. Been to 6 cleaners...nobody can clean it! And yet I am spoken to very rudely. It's apparent that they have no concern for their customers other than spending money in their stores. I'm very disappointed in this opening. I've been to other Mariano's in the Chicago area and this one pales in comparison. I don't see much difference in this store from the previous Dominick's. It's amazing that this Mariano's took 7 months to reopen as......a Dominick's with Mariano's signage. Walking through the departments, you get a sense that half of what Mariano's currently carries in other locations is found here. The produce selection is abysmal. Mariano's produce sections closely compete with Whole Foods in terms of variety and quality. Not this Mariano's. The bakery is not as robust as other locations. It's not even worth stopping by. (I always have to check out the bakery in other locations!) For me, I'll continue to go to Jewel or drive a few miles further to go to Vernon Hills. So sad. read more

I have been on the phone for half an hour, trying to order 2 large sandwhiches. First, the deli put me on hold indefinitely. When I called back, I was transferred to four different departments. I finally got someone on the phone, who did not know how to take my order. She gave my call to another employee. who in turn gave it to another I can't believe the level of confusion there was from a deli. They left the phone off the hook while talking about me and my order so I could hear them arguing about whether they should do it or not, and how "difficult" it was- rather off putting? When I stop by to get food, there are a whole lot of employees, but they seem a lot more interested in talking and working behind the scenes than helping an actual customer. They looked right at me, and returned to work, ignoring me completely. I would give zero stars for the experience I had trying to order the sandwhiches and the staff I encountered that day. For the other lovely cashiers and floor workers, the freshness and great selection of the food, and the super sweet lady who works in floral- I would give five stars! I bought the Mariano's meatloaf. It was on sale along with the rotisserie chicken. The meatloaf contained grissel, cartilage and bone in it!!! It was advertised as beef meatloaf. I'm very disappointed!!! Last time I'll buy meatloaf there! read more

This Mariano's is a modified Dominick's. Initially, I dreaded going to this store because the Vernon Hills store was my usual location. But I've grown fond of this location and its tidier layout. The first time I tried curbside pick up at the Lake Zurich location & they forgot all of the meat in my order!! Next time I tried this Gurnee location & all of my frozen stuff was missing!! We have had to go back twice now, at least Lake Zurich tried to make it right by not charging us for the meat. Gurnee however just said oh it was our fault!! Well of course it is, do you think I think it's my husband's fault for not checking through a 400 dollar order before driving all the way home to Fox Lake? They never gave us anything for our lost time & gas money. I guess I'm back to shopping inside Jewel, as that's much closer to me & they don't have curbside pick up. I can't win! read more

I only go there for salad bar - a couple months ago the layout was changed. It's a bad layout that doesnt make sense. Ever since then the quality of the items has gone down and also more items have been missing. No more grilled chicken or Turkey? No more red peppers? I had Mariano's Gurnee do the flowers for my wedding party. They were beautiful. My bouquet specifically was more than I could have imagined. I was quoted around $400 for my bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets, and 10 boutonnieres/corsages plus rose bunches for the centerpieces that we were doing ourselves. When I went to pick up the order, I was shown a bridesmaids bouquet first and I was confused because I thought it was mine based on the size. They showed me my bouquet next and it was huge. I was pleasantly surprised. I do have two minor things to note that I was not particularly happy with regarding the order. The first is that when I called to confirm the order I was told that Gurnee was having their homecoming that same weekend. I wasn't sure what that information had to do with me. I couldn't tell if I was being told that I might not get the variety that I was looking for or if they might be running behind on orders. In any case, it didn't seem like information that pertained to me at all. The second thing is that while I was not very specific regarding types of flowers that I wanted, other than my own bouquet, I did want a certain color scheme. I was going for mostly white/ivory/light pink. Some of the flowers in the bridesmaids bouquets as well as the bunches of roses that I was given were dark and hot pinks. I would recommend being very specific and maybe even bring in pictures. I definitely take some of the blame on this one. I did however say light pinks and that is something that was repeated back to me when I confirmed by order. Overall I was very happy. read more

After reading customer reviews, I learned that this is not the same Mariano's store. It has another name, Kroger. But for some reason goes by Mariano's and ruins Mariano's brand name. Its quality is inferior, for certain products much inferior, to other Mariano's. Produce is almost never fresh, rotten, unripe or just old. I do not really care if staff is friendly or not, obviously some customers are not happy with that too. I used to go to this store to buy fruits and vegetables, but it was a waste of money. I shop at this location weekly. I really like the Mariano's chain. During my visit this week, I noticed a large infestation of fruit flies in the produce section. I informed one of the associates of the issue and they said they would look into it. I waited around the isle to watch and see if he would even check and he obviously didn't care. DISGUSTING! DON'T GO TO THE GURNEE STORE! I grabbed a bag of organic lemons and two were BLUE, completely moldy! I looked at another bag and was not very impressed. Then on to organic veg rotting on the shelves. I wanted to leave immediately, but ventured on. All of the loaves of bread were crushed or falling apart. I had to ask for help to have associates go in the back to get products. It was a shopping experience full of constant searching and waiting. The Gurnee store has always been subpar. I am from Chicago and have worked in Vernon Hills and the Gurnee store has never held up to other stores. Go elsewhere this store is like shopping in a third world country or European countries, not in the EU. They need to shape up, moldy fruit and rotten veg should not be out for customers to touch or see. Take some pride in what you're selling. read more

I really dig the Vernon Hills location, but this one is pretty good. I disliked the Dominicks that was here previously and the Jewel Osco around the corner is sad. The hot bar is decent but their deli and salad bar is really good. Who doesn't like free samples? One criticism I have is maybe just a pet peeve of mine, but the cashiers are not good at bagging. Just like Jewel, they try to throw everything into one bag having no regard for stuff like bread, eggs and chips. Still a very good grocery store. read more

Mariano's is my favorite grocery store. There food is always fresh and the staff is always looking to help. They have hot bars, sushi, salads, and more, it's a great place to stop for lunch and get some delicious food. Once in a while my mom and I will go here for grocery shopping and it's really great because they have awesome organic selections which my mom loves. The only thing that bites are the prices. Item's can get pretty expensive here and it's not really ideal if you live on a budget like me. If you love food, organics, and grocery store aesthetics, stop by Mariano's to satisfy all your grocery needs. read more

If you've been to the Vernon Hills/Libertyville location, don't expect the same from the Gurnee store. I agree with another review that described this location as a Dominick's with a facelift. The food selections are not consistent week to week so I never know if the food items I enjoy weekly, will be there week to week or even month to month. The store feels and looks unorganized and if you're ever there when more than four registers are opened, even on a busy Saturday, you'll be lucky. Employees are friendly and helpful, but the feeling with this store vs. other Mariano's is night and day. My main complaint is the inconsistency of the food items. Twice in the last two weeks I've looked for frozen meat ravioli and all that was available was cheese. The frozen, no-name parmesan crusted chicken breasts are fantastic and were sometimes there, sometimes not, but after they went on sale, I haven't seen them stocked in over a month. I always use Kikkoman stir fry sauce but Mariano's never carried it until it suddenly appeared on the shelf one day. I'm sure it won't last long. My son loves the Campbell's creamy Parmesan chicken sauce, but of course, Mariano's stopped carrying it. However, I can go next door to Target, which isn't even a full grocery store, and buy it there??? I liked diced ham in my omelette, Mariano's hasn't had it in over a month. I love it when items are on sale, but as they are purchased, it would be a great idea to restock the shelf so that they're not all gone at 3pm on a Saturday!! Just Bare chicken breasts are my favorite, but today Mariano's didn't have them...why?? I've even seen gallons of milk on the shelves that expire in four days. And about those shelves, because of their poor quality it is sometimes difficult to take cold gallons of milk or orange juice from them. I went to this store the day before Thanksgiving looking to buy some Artisan cheeses. I was specifically looking for Deer Creek Vat 17 and Barber's 1883 - both cheddar's - they were out of both. When you offer Artisan cheeses Barber's 1883 cheddar is a standard. When I was the cheese supervisor for Lucky's market in St. Petersburg, Fl and Asst Mgr. Specialty Foods Earth Fare Oldsmar, Fl I always had a minimum 100 lbs of Barber' in stock. You need at least 6 samples out and maintained full to sell cheeses. They had Divina fig spreads on sale and only offered 2 selections. Fig/Cocoa was our top selling spread, yet they had none. 5 stores later I ended up at Festival Foods-Kenosha to get all that I needed. The peppadew peppers on the olive bar were the b grade type. I guess Caputo's or Wholefoods is still my choice for Artisan cheeses and Olives. read more

The pharmacy at the Krogers Mariano's in Gurnee is horribly run, EXCEPT, for the head pharmacist, Preet, who is outstanding and can run that place with his eyes closed. My main complaint is that there is rarely anyone but ONE person behind the counter when Preet isn't there! We were 8 deep today waiting just for pick-up! The phones were ringing, people were trying to drop-off on the other end and they were 8 deep! Too many times one of the main gals behind the counter gets the prescription availability wrong! I waited 1 hour to get 20 pills today. I was also told to come back in another week to get another prescription when I was told 5-days ago they'd be ready today!! The truth was, she hadn't done it. In fairness to her, she's swamped all alone. We love Krogers pharmacy and their prices, but come on corporate, get some help in there!! read more

Went shopping with my aunt and cousins at Mariano's August 11 between 11am-12pm. Workers were on the floor stocking items, and there was one man in particular stocking the deli sandwiches "to go" refrigerator who was extremely rude to my aunt. She had the big yellow car cart and was simply passing by him. This guy snapped saying to her, "lets go! Lets go! Lets goo!" She was simply walking past, but apparently she was in his way and had no patience for her and her kids whatsoever. On top of that, my aunt decided to get a large cup of coffee from the ladies near the entrance before we left. The two girls behind the counter were cussing and swearing their heads off in front of my aunt and 3 cousins ages 2, 6, and 8. Man stocking in the yogurt area was not helpful and had no idea where the pickles were nor did he bother asking anyone else to help me. They were in the same aisle(Palm in face). Finally, there was no system or extra help in deli. In vernon hills there are numbers to grab to save your place in line. I ended up taking a grab and go prepackaged meat and cheese after waiting 10min. I normally go to this Mariano's during slow hours (7am or after 8pm) and have no problems, and receive great customer service. Didn't realize how sloppy things get during rush hour. read more

Hands down the worst Mariano's or Kroger named supermarket I have ever shopped at. This place is consistent at being inconsistent. The butcher gets upset if you ask him to cut meat apart from what's on display- say I wanted a thicker cut, he just doesn't get that concept and tells me what's cut is cut. The butcher also plays favorites. When they are busy, and if an old regular comes in or one of their friends, they somehow skip the line.. Which, I have witnessed three times now. The baker can't get the French bread with sesame seed right- one day it'll be correct with the sesame seed on one side, the next day both sides are drenched in sesame seed. The baristas there follow their own recipes and I have never gotten the same tasting flavored coffee on a day to day basis. And just today she filled up large coffees less than three quarters full. They regularly lack inventory in fresh produce and the produce guy that stocks uses the wall of boxes to sit there texting on his phone when he should be working. And the deli just has the most unenthusiastic group working behind a counter I have ever seen- you'd think I just asked for their newborn child when ordering a pound of salami. The entire culture of this store is horrible and I think this place is severely mismanaged is what it boils down to. When This Mariano's gets its culture back, I will be back. For now it's over to Jewel until this place fixes itself. read more

This last time was ridiculous, a young man working at the counter told me he couldn't run my meat through the tenderizer and when I asked why he said "just cuz". Fine. I have fallen in love with this place. My job requires that I travel. Lucky me that on my last trip to Waukegan I discovered this fabulous grocery store. How I wish everywhere had such a place. While staying in hotels it really rocks to find a place that sells tasty prepared foods. Oh man, they will even grill your protein. Fish, chops, steak etc you select and they grill for you. Top it off with any of a wide variety of sides and try not to eat better than you do back home. Oh yeah, the also have all the expected grocery goodies in spades. Wish we had this store back home. Gross. had high hopes after the one in Vernon Hills impressed most everyone I know. It really is unbelievable they have the same name. First, I tried the "lobster bisque" which tasted just horrible. It looks like they just threw in a bunch of imitation crab and added cream. Yuck. Next week, I tried the pistachio cake that must have had some big recipe error. I mean the thing stunk like a chemical spill of some sort. Just inedible to the point that I wanted to take it back but I shall never set foot in that store again. I am a frequent customer of the Mariano's in Vernon Hills. So, now that the Gurnee store is open, I thought I would give it a try. Nope - I am going to stick to Vernon Hills. The Gurnee store is bigger, obviously, because it used to be a Dominick's. The problem is that it still feels like Dominick's, only with higher prices. The store layout isn't as nice, it doesn't feel as quaint, and the staff isn't as friendly or helpful. The produce didn't seem as fresh, and I wonder if it will turnover as quickly as it does at the Vernon Hills store. The 'fromagerie' section didn't seem the same. The bakery didn't seem the same.It is hard to pinpoint why, but I felt like I was still in Dominick's. I didn't even bother to go to the end of the aisles where the beer and wine were. I wonder if there is a cooler in there like the one in VH. I know my feelings are cosmetic and superficial, but I just felt like I was in a yucky Dominick's And I can't justify paying the higher prices when I feel like I am getting the same old thing. read more

Mariano's was a great place to take my students on a field trip in November. The staff were helpful and respectful to my students with special needs. They even opened a special register and waiting patiently as my students counted their money. The staff should be commended for creating an inclusive store for all to shop in. read more

A very nice and clean facility. They have some of the best customer service. They continue to impress me with their knowledge and positive attitudes. They have a great salad bar and other quick easy to prep items on top of their grocery items. If you haven't been to Mariano's, you have to stop by for the many, free samples! I've been in this store several times now and agree that it still feels like a Dominicks. The hot bar was really good when the store first opened but now is. The past several times I tried the hot bar the food wasn't that hot and is mostly various forms of fried chicken. I've tried the pizza twice and it was ok but the sauce was too sweet for me. The sauce tastes like straight tomato paste and there was to much of it. The gelato is not bad but the have a menu of gelato things they could make you but the young woman working the counter told me that was the menu for all of the stores and they don't make any of it. This store is much smaller than others in this Kroger chain. So your selection will be a lot more limited if you usually other locations.

Still my favorite place to shop. The people here are super friendly and the food is always high quality and fresh. The prices are about the same as Walmart for the most part. I do a major shopping run every two weeks for packaged and cleaning items at Walmart. I buy my produce and the rest of my fresh food items here. They have an excellent deli counter, soup bar, salad bar, smoothie shop and coffee shop. They also have a well stocked pharmacy. read more
