I'd like to give a shout out to Tricia who was working the self checkout area today. The Michelob Ultra 24 bottles were on sale for $ 16.99 each if I bought two. When I was checking out she told me I needed the digital coupon to get that deal. While I have never had to use a coupon before when it comes to a better deal when buying two, I took her word for it. I love Jewel products especially their Deli meats! That being said, today I decided to go to the jewel in Gurnee since it was on my way home . There was nobody in line at the deli counter and everyone looked very busy by back there. They ignored me for about 3 minutes , even though I knew they knew I was standing there . But I was fine with that . Until they said okay the next number , is this is not my main Jewel I did not know where the numbers were as it wasn't usual and I had looked around and didn't see them. By then other people had come and they had numbers , and I said excuse me I've been standing here for several minutes and the lady almost shouted I'm sorry but you have to go by the number! Even though it had been plain I've been standing there a long time. So I said thanks I've decided to go to my old Jewel where I go. I left and I'm headed to my Jewel and I'm very happy because at my Jewel they're nice and they would have instantly said oh absolutely, the person who's here first, isn't that what the numbers are for typically? In Dec. 2023, I asked an employee of this store-he was at the manager's desk about the absence of a popular Kosher products brand on their shelves. They make a Matzo ball soup mix. I had been buying this product from this store since I started living in Gurnee. On this night, This product and others by this brand weren't there. I was told; "We stopped selling those products three years ago". Weird...I had see those products more recent than that. Also odd that he had an immediate answer regarding that product.....as if he had been asked this question a lot or had a photographic memory. Honestly the prices at this place are horrible. If you have to go here, start at Walmart across the street for most of your grocery list. You'll save money that way on what you can. Anyway, i noticed how Jewel have this "fresh" something counter (used to be the cheese section) and have freshly squeezed orange juice just like Mariano's. I decided to buy one (same price $3.50) but didnt like it. Drinkable. Definitely better than those Tropicana ones but doesn't taste as fresh like the ones from Mariano's. My favorite section is the bakery. This is a great place to do last minutes shopping for celebrations. They had some delicious cookie and brownie platters this week for weekend festivities. The cakes that are already available are usually fresh and moist. The bakery makes personalized cakes if they are ordered in advance. It is by no means the most affordable grocery store but it is definitely setting the example in terms of selection, cleanliness, and design. That they have a national pharmacy attached to it (I didn't go there just for clarification) makes it that much more attractive a shopping location. I may only come here to get a few items since my main grocery shopping destination is the military commissary (can pass up my tax free shopping privilege) but I promise that the items I get here are only sold here, and are at an affordable price. I definitely recommend this grocery story for your grocery needs as a first choice over all others in the area. read more

This is my default grocery store. It's near my home - though not the closest grocery store - is consistently well-stocked. Even on its busiest days, it's easily navigable. It tends to be clean and well-kept. I find that prices are better in the store since Jewel-Osco was sold off to a larger company. There's no more preferred customer card. And their sales tend to be good if you pay attention to them, particularly on meat and dry goods. My only complaint is about the deli counter. The staff is inconsistent and often inattentive. I end up with quantities of meat and cheese that aren't just slightly over or under, but sometimes an entire quarter pound over or under. I've also found myself with different brands than I've requested. And I'm never sure it's worth the fight because, really, I can find use for the additional quarter pound of provolone. But it would be nice to have them pretend to care when waiting on customers. read more

Love the bakery especially. We buy most of our cakes and pastries there. It may not be a specialty store but they always have the right stuff when we need it. Cake for a kid's birthday, no problem. Love me some Jewel!! Soooo much better than trying to shop at Walmart, which I officially, finally, swore off. Super friendly staff that remains the same, which I like. Makes me feel a bit small town :) The chicken wings are yummie, deli is great, and so is the sushi! I was in this store yesterday (12/2/2019). The whole store is like a refrigerator, it seem to be colder in the store than outside. My hands were like ice cubes. I couldn't even finish shopping it vcd was so cold. One man stocking shelves said they were having problems with the heater. But then another person bagging said its like this all the time. On top of that i bought $3.99 loaf of Goldminer sourdough bread. It looks great on the outside, however tonight i grabbed two slices from the middle and there was mold in the middle of each piece of bread. I called and talked to someone in the bakery and told him about it and the were going to pull the bread. And what about my loaf, bring it in with you receipt and I'm sure they'll give you a refund. Which means "I" have to get back into my car with my gas to return their poor merchandise . I knew i stopped going to this store fore a reason. I see most Jewels have a poor ratng. I was very impressed with their bakery. Everything looked and tasted great (and fresh!). I was pleasantly surprised with all the different flavors, designs and reasonable prices. I will definitely be going back to their bakery for some sweet treats. For the rest of the store, they have just renovated the building, and it looks great! I have been here a few times before and I don't ever post a review about a grocery store, but I will say I was extremely appalled and speechless at the man who was working in the self-check out area on Friday 12/20 at 6:45pm. My boyfriend and I were using the self checkout lane and purchased a weighted blanket and two gift cards with a preset limit of $25 each. We scanned our first gift card and it required an access code from the store employee to input. The employee placed his code in and as he's inputting it in he goes "We usually have customers go through the cashier when they use gift cards, but I'll let this time slide." My boyfriend said, "I didn't see a sign for that rule but next time I know for sure." The employee had the nerve to say "it's actually common sense to do that but don't worry no offense at all." Who dares to say something like that when all we needed was an access code?! We were completely stunned and shocked that someone who works in customer service would tell a customer that and it wasn't even that serious! we just needed him to place an access code and leave it at that! Absolutely ridiculous and insulting to say the least. read more

Absolutely the most disgusting grocery store I've ever been to. I've actually witnessed children PLAYING with the chicken wings, at the end of the salad bar- and employees watched, and did nothing. When the romaine lettuce has been nearly empty(always)- the staff refills it with Salad Express Romaine, which is always old, wilty, and disgusting. I honestly don't know what's wrong with this store. I have yet to meet a friendly worker. Customer service is the worst. I ordered a birthday cake and ended up canceling the order because the worker was so short and rude. The woman at the meat counter seems so miserable as evidenced by the lack of eye contact and irritated demeanor. It took me calling her out just to get some kind of respect as a customer. I shouldn't feel like I'm bothering workers which is exactly how they make you feel. I absolutely hate this store and would rather get dental work done before shopping here. During my checkout today, while holding a tall, dark Starbucks coffee in my hand, the cashier says to me, "how does your overpriced coffee taste?" I replied, "pretty good, thanks." I'm all for small talk but the snarky teenage angst-driven commentary is best suited for his friends. Especially if it's an easy choice to shop elsewhere. The biggest issue I have with this Jewel is its poor layout and difficulty to find things. I do enjoy the people they have wondering the aisles asking if you'd like 1/2 of a free cookie. If they were smarter, they'd have a small cart with the cookies. So when someone says, "mmm...where can I get these?" They hand you the cookies rather than direct you across the store. I'd like to point out that most of the previous reviews are from a year ago or longer and this Jewel Osco location has really improved since the Mariano's opened up. I'm aware that Mariano's is better known for being a quality grocery store, but it is obvious that more money is put into improving other Mariano's locations (like the one in Vernon Hills, for example) and not the Gurnee location. The same could be said for Jewel, as the Zion Jewel is completely different from this location. If you are choosing between the Mariano's or Jewel Osco for grocery shopping in Gurnee IL choose Jewel. They have a much wider selection in food (especially the organic sections), the store is easier to navigate, better customer service, better hot food/ready for dinner food etc. etc. If you don't believe me, go compare the two for yourself. read more

I really like this location. It never seems to be too busy. Staff was friendly and helpful during this visit. Store was clean. Prices are a bit higher than at Walmart but it's rare to find a business that can compete with Walmart's prices. This visit was for Deschutes beer which I can't get in South Carolina. Been shopping at this location for 19 years and it is a nice store. Went to pick up a rib roast for Easter and the staff in the meat department could not have possibly been ruder!! Counter helper actually rolled eyes and frowned when I asked if they had more roasts cut in back as the case had not been filled. She went in back and actually got into a screaming match with butcher..believe it! The store manager on duty, I believe Abbie, was very nice and helpful and apologized for childish, unprofessional behavior of meat department. If you can't find what your looking for already in the case, don't bother the staff in the meat department, they are too busy and get a little cranky if you ask them to stop their important work to help a customer! I've lived in Gurnee 30 yrs, and as long as I've lived here I've shopped at this location. For years now there has been a white gentleman on Jewel lot with a sign reading Homeless , hungry, please help, begging for money. I've given to him money in and outside the store. Never seen the Gurnee police address him in any fashion. This evening I was in the store and a black female with a sign asking for money to buy food, I gave her money, she had a few items and she was in line a few isles over from me, as I was checking out I 4 Gurnee Police officers approached her and told her she has to leave. That lady cried, and I found it so upsetting. I don't jump racism, but it this case I whole heartedly believe it was the case. A White female who said she was the manager met the officers and directed them to her. I feel it was WRONG on all levels. You can't let one race and gender beg in, out and around the store and not another. I will not spend my money at this location again. Being a Black Female, I'm offended!
